Tequila

Time in oak. Blanco is unaged or rested less than two months, so it tastes bright, peppery, and agave-forward. Reposado rests two to twelve months in oak and picks up vanilla and caramel. Añejo ages one to three years and drinks like a sipping spirit, and extra añejo ages three years or longer.

Mexican regulations allow tequila makers to use small amounts of additives such as glycerin, caramel color, oak extract, and sugar syrup without listing them on the label. Additive-free tequilas are verified to use none of them, so what you taste comes from the agave, the cooking, and the barrel. Shop our additive-free tequila or read why additive-free matters.

A tequila labeled 100% agave is made only from the sugars of the blue Weber agave plant. Tequila without that label is a mixto, which only has to be 51% agave, with the rest coming from other sugars. For sipping and for better cocktails, 100% agave is the one to buy.

They're cousins. Both are Mexican agave spirits, but tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave, mostly in Jalisco, and the agave is usually steamed. Mezcal can use dozens of agave species, mostly comes from Oaxaca, and is often roasted in earthen pits, which gives it a smoky flavor.

Cristalino is aged tequila, usually añejo, that has been filtered through charcoal to remove the color picked up in the barrel. The result keeps much of the smooth, rounded character of an aged tequila with the clear look of a blanco.

A 100% agave blanco tequila, such as Patrón Silver, Don Julio Blanco or Casamigos Blanco. Its bright, peppery agave flavor stands up to fresh lime and orange liqueur. For a richer, rounder margarita, try a reposado. Save añejos and extra añejos for sipping neat.
