About Vodka

Vodka is one of the most versatile and widely consumed spirits in the world, distilled from grains, potatoes, grapes, or other fermentable materials to achieve a clean, neutral character. Produced across regions spanning Poland, Russia, Sweden, France, and the United States, vodka undergoes multiple distillations and filtration processes that define its smoothness and purity. The best vodka strikes a balance between a silky mouthfeel and subtle flavor nuances that distinguish one expression from another.

When choosing a premium vodka, the base ingredient matters more than most drinkers realize. Wheat-based vodkas tend to deliver a crisp, light profile, while potato vodkas offer a creamier, fuller body. Rye-based expressions bring a subtle spice and complexity. Price tiers range from reliable everyday options to ultra-premium small-batch releases, and top producers like Belvedere, Grey Goose, and Chopin have set benchmarks for quality. Tasting vodka neat at room temperature reveals its true character.

What to look for in Vodka:

  • Base ingredient: Wheat, potato, rye, corn, and grape each impart distinct texture and flavor characteristics that shape the overall drinking experience.
  • Distillation and filtration: Multiple distillations and advanced filtration methods such as charcoal or limestone processing contribute to smoothness and purity.
  • Origin and terroir: Polish and Russian vodkas carry centuries of tradition, while French and American craft distilleries bring innovative techniques and local grain sourcing.
  • Intended use: Sipping vodkas prioritize complexity and mouthfeel, while mixing vodkas emphasize clean neutrality that blends seamlessly into cocktails.

Vodka remains a cornerstone of any well-rounded spirits selection, spanning sub-categories like flavored vodka, craft small-batch vodka, and ultra-premium sipping vodka. Explore the full Spirits range for even more variety. Whether you prefer a classic Polish potato vodka or a French wheat-distilled expression, there is a premium bottle suited to every occasion and palate.

Vodka FAQ

What is vodka made from?

Almost anything that ferments. Most vodka is made from wheat, rye, corn, or potatoes, and some from grapes or other fruit. The base shapes the texture: rye tends to be spicy, wheat soft, potato creamy, and corn slightly sweet.

Is there really a difference between vodkas?

Yes, especially when you drink it neat or in a martini. Raw material, distillation, filtration, and water all affect texture and finish. Traditional Polish and Ukrainian vodkas, for example, often have more grain character than ultra-filtered brands.

What's the best vodka for a martini?

Pick one you'd enjoy neat, since the vodka is the whole drink. Many prefer a rye or wheat vodka, such as French wheat Grey Goose, for a crisp martini, or a potato vodka for a rounder, creamier one.

Is vodka gluten-free?

Vodkas made from corn, potatoes, or grapes start gluten-free, and Tito's, made from corn, is a popular choice. Vodka distilled from wheat or rye has gluten proteins largely removed in distillation, but people with celiac disease should check with the producer.
