Slivovitz and Rakia

About Slivovitz and Rakia

Slivovitz brandy is a traditional plum brandy with deep roots in Eastern European distilling culture, produced primarily across Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Czech Republic, and other Balkan and Central European nations. Made exclusively from fermented Damson or other regional plum varieties, slivovitz undergoes double distillation in copper pot stills to achieve a clean, intensely fruity spirit. Its protected production heritage and unmistakable plum character distinguish it from virtually every other fruit brandy on the market.

When buying slivovitz brandy, flavor profiles range from fiery and assertive unaged expressions to smoother, oak-mellowed bottlings that develop honeyed and spiced complexity over time. Entry-level slivovitz offers an authentic introduction to the category, while aged and single-orchard releases command premium prices for their depth and refinement. Renowned producers from Serbia and the Czech Republic consistently set the standard, though outstanding slivovitz also comes from smaller artisan distilleries throughout the Balkans.

What to look for in Slivovitz Brandy:

• Plum variety: The specific cultivar — such as Požegača or Čačanska — directly influences the aroma intensity and sweetness of the finished spirit.
• Age statement: Unaged slivovitz delivers raw plum power, while expressions aged five years or longer in oak develop vanilla, dried fruit, and warming spice notes.
• Region of origin: Serbian Šljivovica carries protected status and strict production standards, offering a reliable benchmark of quality and authenticity.
• Distillation method: Double-distilled slivovitz in traditional copper pot stills tends to produce a purer, more aromatic spirit compared to column-distilled alternatives.

Slivovitz brandy spans a remarkable range, from crystal-clear unaged rakija to richly matured reserve bottlings worthy of slow sipping. Sub-categories include young white slivovitz, barrel-aged golden expressions, and limited single-harvest releases.
