Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is the world's most widely planted red grape variety and one of the most sought-after wines among collectors and casual drinkers alike. Known for its full body, firm tannins, and deep color, Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in warm climates where the thick-skinned grape achieves full phenolic ripeness. Major growing regions include Napa Valley, Bordeaux's Left Bank, Coonawarra, and the Maipo Valley, each imparting distinct terroir-driven characteristics that define the final wine.

When selecting a Cabernet Sauvignon, consider the region, vintage, and producer reputation. Entry-level bottles from Chile or Australia often deliver ripe blackcurrant and plum flavors at accessible price points, while premium Napa Valley and Bordeaux expressions introduce layers of cedar, graphite, tobacco, and cassis that reward cellaring. Single-vineyard and reserve designations typically indicate stricter fruit selection and extended oak aging, resulting in greater complexity and aging potential.

What to look for in Cabernet Sauvignon:

• Region of Origin: Napa Valley Cabernets tend toward opulent dark fruit, while Bordeaux blends emphasize structure, earthiness, and finesse.
• Tannin Structure: Younger vintages often show gripping tannins that soften with age, so matching tannin level to drinking timeline is essential.
• Oak Treatment: French oak imparts subtle spice and vanilla, while American oak contributes bolder coconut and dill notes; both shape the wine's profile significantly.
• Vintage Year: Climate variations between vintages can dramatically affect concentration, acidity, and overall balance, making vintage selection a key buying decision.

Cabernet Sauvignon ranges from approachable, fruit-forward styles ideal for weeknight dinners to highly allocated single-vineyard bottlings suited for long-term cellaring. Sub-styles include Bordeaux-style blends, 100% varietal expressions, and right-bank-inspired Cabernet-Merlot cuvées. Explore the full Wine range for additional red and white varietals. Whether you prefer a bold Napa Cabernet Sauvignon or an elegant Left Bank Bordeaux, the right bottle elevates every occasion.
