About Liqueurs & Cordials

A liqueur starts with a base spirit (neutral grain spirit, brandy, whiskey, rum or tequila) that is flavored by steeping, infusing or redistilling botanicals and fruit, then sweetened before bottling. Sweetness, strength and texture vary widely, which is why one shelf can hold a bitter aperitivo and a dessert cream.

Liqueurs & Cordials FAQ

What is the difference between a liqueur and a cordial?

In the United States the two words are used interchangeably for a sweetened, flavored spirit. In Britain, cordial usually means a nonalcoholic fruit syrup, which causes some confusion. On our shelves, Chartreuse Green Liqueur and Old Krupnik Honey Liqueur are both liqueurs, and an American would happily call either one a cordial.

What is Malört?

Malört is a bitter liqueur flavored with wormwood, and Jeppson's Malört is the bottle Chicago made famous. It is sharp, grapefruit-pith bitter and usually taken as a cold shot, often with a beer back. We stock the 750ML, a gift set and a 50ML six-pack for first-timers and friends from out of town.

What are the most popular liqueurs for cocktails?

A short list covers a lot of drinks: Cointreau for Margaritas and Cosmopolitans, Campari for the Negroni, a coffee liqueur such as Mr. Black Cold Brew for an Espresso Martini, and Drambuie Liqueur for the Rusty Nail. Add Disaronno Amaretto and Baileys Irish Cream and you can make most classic after-dinner drinks too.

How should you store liqueur after opening?

Most high-proof herbal and fruit liqueurs, such as Becherovka Herbal Liqueur or Vana Tallinn, keep well at room temperature with the cap tight and away from sunlight. Cream liqueurs need more care, so follow the label, and egg-based bottles like Pennsylvania Dutch Egg Nog belong in the fridge once opened.
