About Whiskey Liqueurs

Sweetened whiskey has deep roots, from Scottish honey liqueurs to American rock and rye. These bottles keep the grain character of whiskey while adding sweetness and flavor.

Producers start with a whiskey base (Scotch, Irish, Canadian or American) and blend in honey, sugar, herbs, spices or fruit. Drambuie pairs Scotch with heather honey, herbs and spices. Irish Mist builds on Irish whiskey and honey, and Yukon Jack brings a honeyed Canadian whisky profile. Southern Comfort combines whiskey with fruit and spice flavors, Barenjager Honey & Bourbon blends honey liqueur with bourbon, and Shanky's Whip is an Irish whiskey liqueur with vanilla notes.

Rock and rye is its own American category: rye whiskey sweetened with rock candy and infused with citrus and fruit. Hochstadter's Slow & Low is bottled to drink like an Old Fashioned, and Jacquin's Rock & Rye is a long-running version of the style.

Pour these neat, on the rocks, or chilled as a shot. The Rusty Nail (blended Scotch and Drambuie stirred over ice) is the essential cocktail here, and a Scarlett O'Hara (Southern Comfort, cranberry juice and lime) is an easy highball. For straight bottles, browse our whiskey and bourbon collections, or the full liqueurs and cordials shelf. The Barn Buyer's Guides go deeper on specific bottles.

Whiskey Liqueurs FAQ

What is whiskey liqueur?

Whiskey liqueur is whiskey that has been sweetened and flavored with ingredients such as honey, herbs, spices or fruit. It is softer and sweeter than straight whiskey and easy to sip on ice. Drambuie Liqueur, made with Scotch and honey, and Irish Mist Liqueur, made with Irish whiskey, are two long-standing examples.

What is Drambuie and how do you drink it?

Drambuie is a Scotch whisky liqueur flavored with heather honey, herbs and spices. Sip it neat or over a large ice cube, or stir it with blended Scotch to make a Rusty Nail, the drink it is best known for. Drambuie Liqueur comes in 750ML and 375ML bottles, and a splash also works in a hot toddy.

What is rock and rye?

Rock and rye is an American liqueur made from rye whiskey sweetened with rock candy and flavored with citrus and fruit. It was a common bar staple generations ago and has made a comeback in recent years. Hochstadter's Slow & Low Rock & Rye is built to drink like an Old Fashioned over ice.

Is Southern Comfort a whiskey?

Southern Comfort is a whiskey liqueur rather than a straight whiskey: it combines a whiskey base with fruit and spice flavors and added sweetness. It is usually served over ice, with cola, or as a chilled shot. Southern Comfort 100 Proof is the stronger option for anyone who wants more backbone in mixed drinks.
