About Chocolate & Dessert Liqueurs

This shelf covers the sweet end of the liqueur aisle: chocolate, vanilla, caramel and pastry-inspired bottles that work as an after dinner pour or a cocktail ingredient.

Classic creme de cacao is made by infusing or distilling cacao beans in a spirit, then sweetening it. The white (clear) style from brands like Marie Brizard and Dekuyper is the cocktail workhorse, while brown versions such as Joseph Cartron and Tempus Fugit Creme de Cacao a la Vanille bring deeper cocoa and vanilla. Fuller chocolate liqueurs like Dorda Double Chocolate and Romeo Marameo lean toward dessert in a glass.

The dessert side of the shelf includes Licor 43 Chocolate, Creme Brulee and Caramel Cookie, Dorda Sea Salt Caramel, Tiramisu Liqueur, Lucien Vanilla and Cognac, and Tuaca, a vanilla and citrus brandy liqueur. Travis Hasse's pie liqueurs, including Apple Pie and Cherry Pie, bring baked fruit flavors.

Serve these chilled and neat, pour them over ice cream, or shake them into cocktails. The Grasshopper (white creme de cacao, green creme de menthe and cream) and the Brandy Alexander (brandy, dark creme de cacao and cream, dusted with nutmeg) are two classics. See related styles in Coffee Liqueurs and Cream Liqueurs, or visit our Barn Buyer's Guides.

Chocolate & Dessert Liqueurs FAQ

What is chocolate liqueur?

Chocolate liqueur is any sweet liqueur built on cacao or chocolate. Clear styles, called white creme de cacao, are mostly used in cocktails, while richer bottles such as Dorda Double Chocolate Liqueur or Licor 43 Chocolate Liqueur are made for sipping chilled or pouring over dessert. Sweetness and body vary widely from brand to brand.

What is the difference between creme de cacao and chocolate liqueur?

Creme de cacao is a traditional, lighter-bodied liqueur flavored with cacao, sold in white (clear) and dark versions and built mainly for mixing. Chocolate liqueurs are often thicker and more dessert-like. Marie Brizard White Cocoa is a classic creme de cacao, while Romeo Marameo Chocolate Liqueur sits on the richer dessert side.

What cocktails use white creme de cacao?

White creme de cacao gives the Grasshopper its chocolate note, shaken with green creme de menthe and cream, and it also appears in the 20th Century cocktail with gin, a blanc aperitif wine and lemon. Dekuyper White Creme De Cacao or Marie Brizard White Cocoa both work, adding chocolate flavor without changing the drink's color.

How do you drink chocolate liqueur?

Pour it cold and neat into a small glass, over ice, or poured over vanilla ice cream for an easy dessert. It also mixes well with coffee or hot chocolate. Licor 43 Chocolate Liqueur pairs nicely with espresso, while Tempus Fugit Creme de Cacao a la Vanille is a strong choice for a Brandy Alexander.
