The Best Tequila for Sipping: Blanco, Reposado, Añejo and Extra Añejo

The Barn Buyer's Guide: Siete Leguas Reposado, El Tesoro Blanco, Tequila Ocho Reposado, Tapatio Añejo, G4 Blanco, Don Julio 1942 and Don Fulano Imperial tequila

The Best Tequila for Sipping: Our Picks for Blanco, Reposado, Añejo and Extra Añejo

The best sipping tequila is not always the oldest or the most expensive one. Plenty of people who say they don't like tequila neat have only tried shots of the cheap stuff. Pour a good additive-free blanco or a well-made reposado at room temperature and the agave does the talking. We sort the category the way we do at the counter: by age first, then by budget. Every bottle below ships nationwide.

Our Picks at a Glance

The Best Sipping Tequilas, Compared

All bottles are 100% blue Weber agave at 40% ABV (80 proof). "Additive-free" means the bottle is in our additive-free tequila collection, which follows third-party verification.

Best Blanco Tequila to Sip

Blanco is the purest look at agave, so it is where shortcuts show. A good one tastes of cooked agave, black pepper, citrus and wet stone. These are the blancos we pour for people who think blanco is only for margaritas. For mixing, see our guide to the best tequila for margaritas.

El Tesoro Blanco
$50 to $75 · 80 proof · Arandas, Jalisco Highlands

Made at La Alteña, the Camarena family distillery, with agave crushed by a stone tahona. It drinks bright and peppery, with sweet cooked agave and a long, clean finish. Additive-free, and a fair test for any blanco you try after it.

Shop El Tesoro Blanco →

Siete Leguas Blanco
Under $50 · 80 proof · 700ml · Atotonilco el Alto, Highlands

A family-run highland distillery that blends tequila made the old way, with a tahona, and tequila made the modern way. Earthy, rich and peppery. If you want one blanco that tastes like the real thing for under $50, this is the bottle.

Shop Siete Leguas Blanco →

Cazcanes No. 7 Blanco
$50 to $75 · 80 proof · Amatitán, Jalisco Lowlands

A lowland blanco from the Tequila Valley, where the volcanic soil pushes agave toward herbs and minerals instead of fruit. Savory, oily and peppery, with a long finish. A great bottle for someone who already likes highland blancos and wants to taste the other side of Jalisco.

Shop Cazcanes No. 7 →

G4 Blanco
Under $50 · 80 proof · Jesús María, Jalisco Highlands

Made by Felipe Camarena at El Pandillo, a distillery built around tahona crushing and a mix of rainwater and spring water. Clean, sweet agave with a mineral snap. A great everyday sipper from the additive-free aisle.

Shop G4 Blanco →

Best Reposado for Sipping

Reposado rests two to twelve months in oak. Done right, the barrel rounds off the edges and adds a little vanilla without hiding the agave. This is the style we suggest most often to someone looking for one sipping tequila.

Siete Leguas Reposado
Under $50 · 80 proof · 700ml · Jalisco Highlands

Our best overall sipping tequila. Cooked agave and pepper up front, then light caramel, cinnamon and a dry oak finish. It tastes like tequila first and barrel second, which is exactly the balance a reposado should strike.

Shop Siete Leguas Reposado →

Tequila Ocho Reposado
$50 to $75 · 80 proof · Arandas, Jalisco Highlands

Tequila Ocho bottles agave from one named field per batch, so each release tastes a little different, the way vintages of wine do. The reposado is bright and juicy, with white pepper and a touch of vanilla. Additive-free, and one of the most interesting reposados we have tasted.

Shop Tequila Ocho Reposado → Shop Ocho Plata →

G4 Reposado
$50 to $75 · 80 proof · Jalisco Highlands

Light on oak by design, so the minerality of the blanco carries through with a soft layer of vanilla and dried fruit. Pour it next to G4 Blanco and you can taste exactly what the barrel adds.

Shop G4 Reposado →

Nosotros Reposado
Under $50 · 80 proof · Jalisco

The bottle we hand to people who are new to sipping tequila. A blend of highland and lowland agave rested in French oak, with soft vanilla, caramel and cooked agave. Smooth enough for a first neat pour without tasting sweetened.

Shop Nosotros Reposado →

Best Añejo and Extra Añejo

Añejo spends one to three years in barrels, extra añejo three or more. These are the after-dinner pours, and the closest tequila gets to bourbon or Cognac. The risk with long aging is that oak takes over. These bottles keep the agave in the picture.

Tapatio Añejo
$50 to $75 · 80 proof · Arandas, Jalisco Highlands

Another La Alteña bottle, and a quiet benchmark for the category. Roughly a year and a half in American oak gives butterscotch and cinnamon, but cooked agave stays front and center. Additive-free and fairly priced for what it is.

Shop Tapatio Añejo →

El Tesoro Añejo
$75 to $100 · 80 proof · Jalisco Highlands

Tahona-crushed agave aged in ex-bourbon barrels. Rich and dry rather than sweet, with toasted oak, dried citrus and pepper. The añejo we pour for whiskey drinkers who want proof that aged tequila can be serious.

Shop El Tesoro Añejo →

Don Fulano Imperial Extra Añejo
$100 and up · 80 proof · Tequila, Jalisco · Highland agave

Aged at least five years in French oak and oloroso sherry casks. Dried figs, apricot, toffee and baking spice, with a long, elegant finish. It sips like a fine brandy and is additive-free.

Shop Don Fulano Imperial →

El Mayor Extra Añejo Sherry Cask
$100 and up · 80 proof · Jalisco

Fully matured in sherry casks for more than three years, not just finished in them. Raisin, nutty sherry and dark chocolate over cooked agave. A small-production bottle, a strong value for the category and our pick for best extra añejo.

Best Sipping Tequila Under $50

You do not need to spend $100 for a tequila worth sipping. These are the bottles we recommend when the budget is firm.

Corazón Liquor Barn Single Barrel ex-Weller Añejo
Under $50 · 80 proof · Our single barrel

We picked this barrel ourselves. About 15 months in a former W.L. Weller bourbon barrel gives caramel, vanilla and soft wheated-bourbon sweetness over cooked agave. If you drink bourbon and are curious about añejo, start here.

Shop Corazón LB Single Barrel →

Mijenta Blanco
Under $50 · 80 proof · Jalisco Highlands

An additive-free highland blanco with a floral, almost honeyed nose and a soft, round palate. An easy first neat blanco for someone used to vodka or gin.

Shop Mijenta Blanco →

Lunazul Extra Añejo
$50 to $75 · 80 proof · Jalisco

A little over our $50 line, but one of the most affordable extra añejos we know. Long aging in used bourbon barrels gives a dessert-like pour of caramel and vanilla. A smart way to find out if extra añejo is your style before you spend more.

Best Splurge and Best Gift

Don Julio 1942
$100 and up · 80 proof · Jalisco

Aged at least two and a half years in American oak. Rich caramel, vanilla and chocolate, softer and sweeter than the añejos above. It is the bottle most people picture when they want a celebration tequila, and the tall bottle looks the part.

Shop Don Julio 1942 →

Clase Azul Reposado
$100 and up · 80 proof · Hand-painted ceramic decanter

The best tequila gift for someone who will keep the bottle on display long after it's empty. Vanilla, caramel and sweet spice in a decanter painted by hand. Not our pick for agave purists, but nothing else on the shelf gets the same reaction when it's unwrapped.

Tequila Ages and Additives Explained

Blanco, reposado, añejo, extra añejo

Blanco (also called silver or plata) is unaged or rested under two months. Reposado rests two to twelve months in oak. Añejo ages one to three years in barrels of 600 liters or less. Extra añejo ages three years or more. Older is not better, just different: blanco shows the agave, añejo shows the barrel.

Highlands vs. lowlands

Highland agave from Los Altos, around Arandas and Atotonilco, tends to taste sweeter, fruitier and more floral. Lowland agave from the Tequila Valley, around Amatitán, leans earthy, herbal and peppery. Neither is better. Try a bottle from each.

What "additive-free" means

Mexican rules allow up to 1% of a tequila's weight in additives such as glycerin, oak extract, caramel color and sugar syrup, without listing them on the label. That small amount can make a tequila taste noticeably sweeter and smoother. Additive-free brands skip all of it, and some have that checked by a third-party program. Read more in our guide What Is Additive-Free Tequila?

Cristalino

An aged tequila filtered through charcoal to remove the color. It keeps some of the barrel's smoothness and loses some of its depth. Popular, but for sipping we prefer a well-made reposado.

The counter rule of thumb Check for "100% agave" first. Then, if the tequila tastes like cake frosting or marshmallow, it probably has help. Real agave tastes of cooked agave, pepper, citrus and earth. For the best value, start with reposado.

How to Sip Tequila

  • Neat, at room temperature: one to two ounces. Cold mutes the agave.
  • The right glass: a small tulip or wine glass beats a shot glass. It lets the aroma build without the alcohol burn hitting first.
  • Small sips: let the first sip coat your mouth. The second one always tastes better.
  • A drop of water or one cube: fine for añejo and extra añejo, and it can open up a big blanco.
  • Skip the salt and lime: that ritual was made to cover up rough tequila. A good bottle doesn't need it. An orange slice with cinnamon pairs well with añejo.
