Description

Warre's Warrior Port is a premium Reserve Ruby Port from Portugal's Douro Valley, bottled at 20% ABV in a 750ml format. Warrior holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously shipped Port brand in the world, with an unbroken history dating back to the 1750s. It earned 90 points from both Wine Spectator and Wine & Spirits, along with a Gold Medal at the International Wine Challenge in 2009.

Quick Facts: ABV: 20%  |  Origin: Douro Valley, Portugal  |  Reserve Ruby Port  |  Producer: Warre's

Production & Heritage

Warre's Warrior draws its fruit from two of the house's finest estates: Quinta da Cavadinha in the Pinhão Valley and Quinta do Retiro in the Rio Torto Valley — the same quintas that supply grapes for Warre's celebrated Vintage Ports. The blend centers on Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Barroca, three of the Douro's most esteemed red grape varieties. Head winemaker Peter Symington personally selects lots of particularly rich and fruity Reserve Port, which are then matured in oak casks at the traditional lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia until they reach optimal maturity before bottling.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Deep and seductive, opening with ripe plums and dark cherries before giving way to layers of warm baking spices. There is an underlying richness that suggests concentrated red fruit preserves and a hint of floral perfume.

Taste: The entry is lush and full-bodied, with waves of ripe raspberry, plum, and cherry immediately coating the palate. At mid-palate, Asian spice and dark chocolate emerge, framed by well-integrated schisty tannins that provide structure without aggression. The overall impression is one of balance — bright fruit supported by a firm, mineral-edged backbone.

Finish: Long and complex, with lingering notes of dark chocolate, black pepper, and fresh minerality. The fruit slowly fades into a clean, satisfying close that invites the next sip.

How to Drink Warrior Port

Warrior is best enjoyed slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C (61–64°F), poured into a small tulip-shaped glass to concentrate its expressive aromatics. It drinks beautifully on its own after dinner, but its bold fruit and structured tannins also make it a versatile cocktail ingredient.

  • Port Tonic: The ripe berry fruit and spice cut through tonic water for a refreshing long drink — a popular serve in Porto itself.
  • Portal Negroni: Substitute Warrior for sweet vermouth alongside gin and Campari; its concentrated fruit and chocolate notes add depth and Portuguese character.
  • Portonic Spritz: Combine with sparkling water, a squeeze of lemon, and a sprig of mint for a lighter warm-weather aperitif that showcases Warrior's vibrant fruit.

Best For

  • After-dinner sipping alongside a cheese course or chocolate dessert
  • Introducing someone to quality Port beyond basic Ruby styles
  • Gifting a wine enthusiast something with genuine historical pedigree
  • Building a home bar with a versatile fortified wine for mixing and sipping

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Warrior Port taste like? Warrior Port delivers luscious plum, raspberry, and cherry flavors layered with Asian spice and dark chocolate, all carried by a full body and balanced tannin structure. The finish is long, with fresh minerality and lingering black pepper.

How does Warrior Port compare to Graham's Ruby Port? Warrior is often described as sitting between Graham's sweeter style and Dow's drier profile, offering a middle ground with more complexity and nuance than a standard Ruby. Both are Symington-family Port brands from the Douro, but Warrior's extended oak aging and reserve-quality selection give it greater depth.

Is Warrior Port good for sipping neat? Warrior is an excellent neat sipper, particularly after dinner, thanks to its rich fruit concentration, balanced sweetness, and long finish. Serving it slightly chilled to around 16–18°C brings out its aromatic complexity.

Where is Warrior Port made? Warrior Port is produced by Warre's in Portugal's Douro Valley, with fruit sourced from Quinta da Cavadinha and Quinta do Retiro in the Pinhão and Rio Torto valleys. The wine is aged in oak casks at the historic Port lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, near the city of Porto.

What foods pair well with Warrior Port? Stilton and aged cheddar complement its fruit and structure beautifully. Dark chocolate truffles mirror its cocoa notes. Roasted walnuts and dried figs echo its dried-fruit richness. Berry-based tarts or crème brûlée work as dessert pairings, while cured meats like prosciutto provide a savory contrast to its sweetness.

What sizes does Warrior Port come in? Warre's Warrior Port is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle.

Is Warrior Port worth the price? Warrior positions as a premium Reserve Ruby Port — a step above entry-level Ruby but well below Vintage or Vintage-dated offerings. Given its reserve-quality selection, oak aging at Vila Nova de Gaia, and consistent critical scores of 90 points, it represents strong value within the Reserve Port tier.

Why Warrior Port?

No other Port brand in the world can claim an unbroken shipping history stretching back to the 1750s, making Warrior a living link to the earliest days of the Port trade. Beyond the heritage, the wine itself justifies the reputation: fruit sourced from the same top-tier quintas that supply Warre's Vintage Port, selected by one of the Douro's most experienced winemakers, and aged in oak until fully mature. Its back-to-back 90-point scores from Wine Spectator and Wine & Spirits, along with multiple Gold and Silver medals from the International Wine Challenge and International Wine and Spirit Competition, confirm its standing as one of the most dependable Reserve Ports on the market. Bright, balanced, and more complex than its price tier suggests, Warrior consistently over-delivers.
