Quick Facts: ABV: ~14.5%  |  Origin: Barossa Valley, South Australia  |  Multi-Varietal Red Blend  |  Winery: Pepperjack (Treasury Wine Estates)

Production & Heritage

Pepperjack was established in 1996 by Barossa stalwart Saltram Wines as a way to showcase modern Barossa winemaking at an accessible price point, and is named in honour of William Salter, one of Australia's earliest winemakers. The brand is now owned by Treasury Wine Estates. The Barossa Red is built on a backbone of 78% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, rounded out with Merlot, Malbec, Grenache, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, and Tempranillo — an eight-varietal blend that draws depth and complexity from its breadth of fruit sources. After crushing and destemming, each parcel is fermented separately in traditional-style fermenters, then gently pressed, racked, and transferred to a combination of American, French, and Hungarian oak barrels for 12 months of maturation.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with rich concentration of black and blue fruits — ripe blackberry and sweet raspberry leading the way. Deeper layers reveal dark chocolate, mocha, subtle toast, and hints of integrated oak spice.

Taste: On entry, concentrated blackberry, plum, and blueberry fruit coat the palate with generous warmth. The mid-palate introduces gentle smoke, a distinctive herbal mustard-seed character, and ample cracked black pepper. Soft layers of tannin provide structure without aggression, carrying the fruit through to a full, flavour-packed peak.

Finish: Medium in length with ripe, soft tannins that close with a gentle astringent squeeze. Lingering notes of dark berry fruit and vanilla fade slowly, leaving a savoury, peppery impression.

How to Drink Pepperjack Barossa Red

This blend shows its best character at cellar temperature (16–18°C), poured into a generous glass that allows its layered aromas to open up. It drinks well on its own or with food, and benefits from 15–20 minutes of breathing time. For a bold Kalimotxo, the wine's ripe fruit and soft tannins balance well against cola's sweetness. In a Sangria, its dark berry concentration and spice notes create a rich, full-bodied base. A classic Mulled Wine preparation works exceptionally well given the existing black pepper and warm spice character already present in the blend.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Pepperjack Barossa Red taste like? It delivers concentrated blackberry, plum, and blueberry fruit layered with dark chocolate, cracked black pepper, and gentle smoke. Tannins are ripe and soft, finishing full and flavourful with a savoury edge.

How does Pepperjack Barossa Red compare to a straight Barossa Shiraz? Where a single-varietal Barossa Shiraz relies entirely on Shiraz character, Pepperjack Barossa Red blends eight grape varieties — including Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Malbec, and Tempranillo — creating a broader flavour spectrum and softer overall tannin profile. The result is a more approachable, fruit-forward style that sacrifices some varietal intensity for complexity and drinkability.

Is Pepperjack Barossa Red good for everyday drinking? Absolutely — the soft tannins, generous fruit, and medium-bodied structure make it one of the more accessible Barossa reds on the market, well suited to casual meals and relaxed evenings without demanding prolonged cellaring.

Where is Pepperjack Barossa Red made? It is produced in the Barossa Valley, one of Australia's most celebrated wine regions located in South Australia, approximately 60 kilometres northeast of Adelaide. The Pepperjack label originated from Saltram Wines, a historic Barossa winery, and is now managed by Treasury Wine Estates.

What foods pair well with Pepperjack Barossa Red? Grilled lamb chops complement the wine's peppery spice; slow-braised beef cheeks mirror its rich dark fruit concentration; aged cheddar highlights the oak-driven vanilla notes; wood-fired pizza with salami and roasted capsicum echoes the smoky, savoury undertones; and dark chocolate desserts extend the mocha character found on the nose.

What sizes does Pepperjack Barossa Red come in? The standard release is available in a 750ml bottle, which is the most widely distributed format.

Is Pepperjack Barossa Red worth the price? Pepperjack Barossa Red positions as an accessible, value-driven expression within the Barossa category, delivering trophy-winning quality and multi-varietal complexity at a price point well below most premium single-vineyard Barossa reds.

Why Pepperjack Barossa Red?

Few Barossa blends pack eight distinct grape varieties into a single bottle while maintaining coherent, balanced flavour — that structural ambition is the defining feature of this wine. The 12-month maturation program across three different oak types (American, French, and Hungarian) adds layered complexity rarely found at this value tier. A trophy for Best Red Wine – Other Blends and consistent medal performance across multiple vintages confirm that the winemaking team delivers reliable quality year after year. For drinkers seeking a genuine taste of Barossa's generous fruit and warm-climate character without premium single-varietal pricing, this blend remains one of the region's most dependable options.
