Description

Mt. Brave Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is a mountain-grown Napa Valley Cabernet from the Mt. Veeder appellation, bottled at 14.5% ABV in a standard 750ml format. This vintage earned 97 points from Decanter and 96 points from Vinous, placing it among the most acclaimed Mt. Veeder Cabernets of recent years. Crafted by winemaker Chris Carpenter from a single high-altitude estate vineyard, the 2019 is a powerful yet precisely balanced expression of one of Napa's most rugged growing sites.

Quick Facts: ABV: 14.5%  |  Origin: Mt. Veeder, Napa Valley, California  |  Vintage: 2019  |  Winery: Mt. Brave (Jackson Family Wines)

Production & Heritage

Mt. Brave's estate vineyard occupies the northernmost section of the Mt. Veeder appellation, with vines planted at elevations between 1,400 and 1,800 feet on steep, sparse-soiled slopes. Sitting above the fog line, the site receives early morning sun that preserves natural acidity while pushing grapes to full phenolic ripeness — a rare climatic advantage that yields some of the lowest tonnage per acre in all of Napa Valley. All vineyard work is done by hand given the rugged terrain. The 2019 blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec, aged 22 months in 81% new French oak barrels. The wine is part of the Jackson Family Wines portfolio, where Chris Carpenter also produces the La Jota Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with concentrated black cherry, blueberry, and cassis, then unfolds into layers of tobacco, spring flowers, and Asian spice. A subtle graphite minerality adds a distinctly mountain-grown character beneath the ripe dark fruit.

Taste: The entry is dense and fruit-driven, with steeped plum, blackberry, and boysenberry flavors building through a powerful mid-palate. Fine but fierce tannins provide serious structure, while black pepper, cloves, and a savory mineral streak emerge as the wine opens. Acidity is precisely calibrated, keeping the wine lifted and balanced despite its considerable weight.

Finish: Long and savory, with lingering notes of licorice, menthol, anise, and a tarry undercurrent that slowly resolves into clean dark fruit. The tannin grip persists but never overwhelms, suggesting significant aging potential ahead.

How to Drink Mt. Brave 2019

This is a wine built for drinking neat in a large Bordeaux glass, ideally decanted for at least 45 minutes to an hour to allow those fierce tannins to integrate and the aromatic complexity to fully emerge. It can be enjoyed now with decanting but has the structure and acidity to cellar comfortably through 2035 and beyond. Given its weight and intensity, cocktail applications are not recommended — this wine is at its best on its own terms or paired with food.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Mt. Brave 2019 taste like? It delivers a dense, dark-fruited core of blackberry, plum, and cassis framed by firm mountain tannins, graphite minerality, and savory accents of licorice, menthol, and black pepper. The overall impression is of a powerful yet balanced Cabernet with striking inner purity.

How does Mt. Brave 2019 compare to La Jota Cabernet Sauvignon? Both wines are produced by Chris Carpenter under the Jackson Family Wines umbrella, but from different Napa mountain appellations — Mt. Brave from Mt. Veeder and La Jota from Howell Mountain. Wine Advocate notes that while Mt. Brave may not be as broad or expansive on the palate as La Jota, it can be juicier and longer on the finish, presenting a softer expression of mountain Cabernet.

Is Mt. Brave 2019 good for cellaring? Yes — the combination of fierce tannins, balanced acidity, and dense fruit concentration gives this vintage strong aging potential, and multiple critics have noted it will reward patience through at least 2035 if stored properly.

Where is Mt. Brave made? Mt. Brave is produced from a single estate vineyard in the northernmost part of the Mt. Veeder appellation in Napa Valley, California, at elevations between 1,400 and 1,800 feet above the fog line.

What foods pair well with Mt. Brave 2019? Grilled ribeye steak highlights the wine's dark fruit and tannin structure. Braised lamb shanks with rosemary complement its savory, herbal undertones. Aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmigiano-Reggiano stand up to its intensity. A venison loin with blackberry reduction mirrors its fruit profile. Dark chocolate with at least 70% cacao echoes the wine's tarry, bittersweet finish.

What sizes does Mt. Brave 2019 come in? The Mt. Brave Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is available in the standard 750ml bottle.

Is Mt. Brave 2019 worth the price? Mt. Brave positions as a premium Napa Valley mountain Cabernet, and the 2019 vintage — scoring 97 points from Decanter, 96 from Vinous, and 95 from Jeb Dunnuck — represents strong critical validation within its price tier. For a single-estate, hand-farmed, high-elevation Mt. Veeder wine with this level of acclaim, it competes favorably against peers at comparable or higher price points.

Why Mt. Brave 2019?

The 2019 vintage stands as one of the highest-rated releases in Mt. Brave's history, anchored by a 97-point score from Decanter and additional 94–96 point ratings across five major publications. What separates this wine from other Napa Cabernets is its specific terroir: a hand-farmed estate vineyard perched above the fog line on some of the steepest, lowest-yielding slopes in the valley, where sparse volcanic soils force vines to struggle for depth and concentration. Chris Carpenter's decision to age the blend 22 months in 81% new French oak adds polish without masking the raw mineral and savory character that defines Mt. Veeder fruit. The result is a mountain Cabernet with genuine site specificity — dense, structured, and built for the long haul.
