Quick Facts: ABV: 12.5–13% | Origin: Piedmont, Italy | Dolcetto d'Alba DOC | Producer: G.D. Vajra
Production & Heritage
G.D. Vajra is a family-run estate in the Barolo zone of Piedmont, long respected for its site-driven approach to winemaking. What makes this Dolcetto exceptional is its origin: between 1979 and 1985, the Vajra family planted massale selections of antique Dolcetto biotypes in prime Barolo-designated vineyards at Coste di Vergne and Fossati — making this Piedmont's only Dolcetto grown in Barolo cru sites. The wine is fermented for approximately 15 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and rested briefly in steel before bottling, with no oak used at any stage, preserving the grape's vivid fruit purity and aromatic complexity.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: The nose opens with blue and purplish fruit, moving into layered notes of lavender, rose petals, and cloves. A subtle thread of licorice and eucalyptus adds depth beneath the floral top notes.
Taste: The entry is bright and fruit-forward, with raspberry and candied cherry giving way to crème de cassis and sweet spice at mid-palate. Medium-bodied with balanced acidity and medium tannins, the wine carries flavors of bramble berries, tomato leaf, and a gentle bitter almond quality that is characteristic of well-grown Dolcetto.
Finish: The finish is medium in length with a clean, slightly grippy texture. Lingering notes of dark cherry, violet, and a faint mineral undertone leave a refreshing close.
How to Drink Vajra Dolcetto
Serve at a light cellar temperature of 58–62°F to bring out the aromatic detail. This is a wine that shines without intervention — pour it into a standard Burgundy glass and let the fruit speak. For cocktail-adjacent applications: try it in a classic Kalimotxo (red wine and cola) for an easygoing summer drink; use it in a Sangria where its intense berry fruit and low tannin make a lively base; or stir it into a New York Sour as the red wine float, where its vibrant color and fresh acidity create a striking contrast to the whiskey sour beneath.

- Introducing someone to Piedmontese reds beyond Barolo and Barbaresco

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Vajra Dolcetto taste like? It delivers vibrant blue and purple fruit — think candied cherry, cassis, and raspberry — with floral notes of lavender and violet, balanced by medium tannins and a signature bitter almond finish typical of top Dolcetto.
How does Vajra Dolcetto compare to Massolino Dolcetto d'Alba? Both are highly regarded Dolcetto d'Alba DOC wines from respected Piedmontese estates, but Vajra's expression is uniquely sourced from Barolo cru vineyards planted with antique Dolcetto biotypes, giving it a depth and site specificity that most Dolcetto bottlings do not possess. Massolino's version is a reliable benchmark for the appellation, while Vajra's tends to show slightly more aromatic complexity and concentration.
Is Vajra Dolcetto good for everyday sipping? Absolutely — its medium body, balanced acidity, and fruit-driven profile make it an ideal everyday red that requires no decanting and drinks well slightly chilled on its own or alongside a simple meal.
Where is Vajra Dolcetto made? G.D. Vajra is located in the commune of Barolo in Piedmont, northwestern Italy. The Dolcetto fruit comes specifically from the estate's Coste di Vergne and Fossati vineyard sites, which are classified Barolo cru parcels.
What foods pair well with Vajra Dolcetto? Fresh egg pasta with a simple tomato-basil sauce complements the wine's bright acidity. Salumi and charcuterie boards echo its savory undertones. Margherita pizza works naturally with its medium body and cherry fruit. Roasted eggplant or grilled vegetables match the wine's earthy, herbal notes. Aged Parmigiano-Reggiano draws out the subtle bitter almond finish.
What sizes does Vajra Dolcetto come in? The standard release is a 750ml bottle.
Is Vajra Dolcetto worth the price? It positions as a mid-range Dolcetto d'Alba, but the provenance — fruit from Barolo cru vineyards, antique biotype plantings, and consistent 90-point critical scores — delivers a level of complexity that punches well above typical wines in this price tier.
Why Vajra Dolcetto?
This is not ordinary Dolcetto. G.D. Vajra's decision to dedicate prime Barolo-classified vineyard land to an underdog grape like Dolcetto is a statement of conviction, and the wine reflects that ambition. The massale selections of antique biotypes planted between 1979 and 1985 yield fruit with a concentration and aromatic range that standard Dolcetto plantings rarely achieve. Stainless steel fermentation strips away any winemaking artifice, letting the terroir — and the quality of the vineyard sites — come through unfiltered. With back-to-back 90-point scores from both Vinous and Wine Advocate, this is one of the most critically respected Dolcetto wines produced anywhere in Piedmont.
