Description

Compass Box Asyla 750ML is a discontinued blended Scotch whisky bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml format, composed of Highland and Speyside single malts married with Lowland single grain. It earned a Silver Outstanding medal at the 2018 International Spirits Challenge and a matching Silver Outstanding from the International Wine & Spirit Competition—recognition that cemented its reputation as one of Compass Box's most refined releases before its retirement.

Quick Facts: ABV: 40%  |  Origin: Scotland  |  Style: Blended Scotch Whisky  |  Producer: Compass Box Whisky Co.  |  Status: Discontinued (2018)

Production & Heritage

Compass Box Whisky Co., the London-based independent blending house founded in 2000 by John Glaser, created Asyla as a study in delicacy and refinement. The blend married 50% Cameronbridge Lowland single grain with three Highland and Speyside single malts—23% Teaninich, 22% Linkwood, and 5% Glen Elgin—all aged exclusively in first-fill American oak casks. That deliberate cask selection pulled more sweetness and vanilla richness than the refill casks typically used across the Scotch industry, giving Asyla its signature soft, fruit-forward character. Production ceased in 2018 when Compass Box could no longer source appropriately matured stock of its key malt components.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Ripe melon and rosy apples lead, followed by peach syrup, honey-drizzled cereal grains, and a whisper of delicate smoke. Underneath, light coconut, banana, and a faintly waxy bubblegum sweetness add unexpected complexity.

Taste: The entry is remarkably soft and round, with vanilla and caramel rising through the mid-palate. Rich malt sweetness expands gently, balanced by a lemon-lime brightness that keeps the texture from feeling heavy.

Finish: Medium in length, trailing off into gristy malt, a prickle of black pepper, and grassy oak. Orchard fruit lingers cleanly alongside a subtle cereal grain dryness.

How to Drink Asyla

Neat or with a few drops of water is the clearest way to appreciate the delicate balance Glaser engineered into this blend; the first-fill oak sweetness opens further with a small dilution. Given its rarity, cocktail use should be considered carefully, but three classics complement Asyla's profile well: a Penicillin, where the melon and honey notes play beautifully against the ginger-lemon framework; a Rob Roy, with the vanilla and orchard fruit standing up to sweet vermouth; and a simple Scotch Highball, where soda water amplifies the cereal grain and peach notes into a refreshing long serve.

  • Gifting a Scotch enthusiast who values blending artistry over single-distillery branding
  • Introducing someone to blended Scotch through a fruit-forward, unaggressive example

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Asyla taste like? Asyla delivers soft vanilla, caramel, and ripe orchard fruit up front, followed by a medium finish of gristy malt, black pepper, and grassy oak. The overall impression is one of gentle sweetness and light, approachable complexity.

How does Asyla compare to Monkey Shoulder? Both are blended malt-influenced Scotch whiskies designed for approachability, but Asyla incorporates a significant proportion of Lowland grain whisky (50%) aged in first-fill American oak, giving it a softer, more vanilla-driven profile. Monkey Shoulder blends three Speyside single malts exclusively and tends toward creamier vanilla and zesty orange notes with a slightly more malt-forward body.

Is Asyla good for sipping neat? Yes—its 40% ABV and delicate, fruit-led character make it an easy neat pour that rewards slow sipping. A few drops of water open additional cereal and honey nuances without diminishing the finish.

Where is Asyla made? Asyla was blended and bottled by Compass Box Whisky Co., based in London, England, using component whiskies distilled in Scotland at Cameronbridge (Fife), Teaninich (Ross-shire), Linkwood (Speyside), and Glen Elgin (Speyside).

What foods pair well with Asyla? Smoked salmon canapés complement the whisky's delicate smoke and orchard fruit. Shortbread cookies echo its cereal and vanilla sweetness. Mild aged cheddar mirrors the oak-driven richness. Fresh stone fruit like peaches or nectarines amplify the melon and apple aromatics. Light pâtés or chicken liver mousse match the soft, rounded mouthfeel.

What sizes does Asyla come in? Compass Box Asyla was primarily available in the standard 750ml bottle format.

Is Asyla worth the price? As a discontinued expression with Silver Outstanding awards from both the International Spirits Challenge and the IWSC, Asyla has moved from its original position as a premium everyday blend into collectible territory. Remaining bottles command prices above the original retail, but the production quality and award pedigree support its standing among sought-after Compass Box releases.

Why Asyla?

Asyla stood apart in the Compass Box range because of its unwavering focus on first-fill American oak maturation across every component whisky—a discipline that gave the final blend a cohesive vanilla-and-fruit sweetness rarely achieved in blended Scotch. Its dual Silver Outstanding medals at the ISC and IWSC validated that approach with two of the industry's most rigorous blind-tasting panels. Since production ended in 2018 due to depleted malt stocks, available bottles have become increasingly scarce, making each remaining 750ml a snapshot of John Glaser's blending philosophy at its most restrained and elegant.
