Quick Facts: ABV: ~14.5–15.5% (varies by vintage)  |  Origin: Barossa Valley, South Australia  |  Style: Multi-Varietal Red Blend  |  Producer: The Colonial Estate

Production & Heritage

The Colonial Estate was founded by Jonathan Maltus, the Bordeaux-based vigneron also behind Château Teyssier in Saint-Émilion. Maltus applied his French training to Barossa Valley fruit, sourcing grapes from four estate vineyards with yields of less than one ton per acre—extremely low by any standard. The Emigré Red is a blend of Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, and Muscadelle, all handpicked into trays and double-sorted before vinification. Cold pre-maceration precedes fermentation, followed by a combination of delestages (rack-and-return) and pigeage (punch-down) to extract color, tannin, and flavor with precision. Extended maceration on the skins gives way to aging in French oak barrels, cementing the wine's layered, polished structure.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with spicy red berries and dusty mineral tones before revealing deeper layers of espresso, smoke, and fresh flowers. Underbrush and blackberry liqueur emerge with time in the glass, adding brooding complexity.

Taste: On the palate, the entry is generous with black cherry and cassis, supported by a distinctive black olive savory character. The mid-palate develops impressive clarity, with deeper black and blue fruit flavors picking up chewy tannins as it aerates. A cedary, pencil-shaving quality weaves through a core of mint and svelte dark fruit, lending refinement to the wine's considerable concentration.

Finish: The finish is long and brooding, with dark berry and cherry flavors lingering against fine-grained tannins. A subtle mineral edge and trace of espresso bitterness carry the wine well past the last sip.

How to Drink Emigre Red

This is a wine built for thoughtful drinking. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) in a large-bowled glass and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes to allow the layered aromatics to fully unfold. Its weight and structure make it a natural partner for rich cuisine rather than cocktail use. Pair it with slow-braised short ribs for a match that mirrors the wine's depth, grilled lamb shoulder seasoned with rosemary and garlic to complement its herbal-spice profile, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmigiano-Reggiano to offset the fine tannins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Emigre Red taste like? Emigre Red delivers concentrated black cherry, cassis, and blackberry flavors alongside a distinctive savory black olive character, all framed by fine, chewy tannins and a cedary, mineral finish. It balances ripe Barossa fruit with a structured, Old World–leaning profile.

How does Emigre Red compare to Torbreck The Steading? Both are multi-varietal Barossa Valley reds anchored by Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre, but Emigre Red incorporates three additional varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, and Muscadelle—and is vinified using specifically French techniques like delestages and pigeage, giving it a more Bordeaux-influenced structural profile.

Is Emigre Red good for cellaring? Yes—its firm tannin framework, concentrated fruit, and French oak aging give it the architecture for medium-term cellaring of five to ten years, depending on vintage, though it drinks well on release with proper decanting.

Where is Emigre Red made? Emigre Red is produced by The Colonial Estate in Barossa Valley, South Australia. The project was created by Jonathan Maltus, a Bordeaux-based winemaker who also owns Château Teyssier in Saint-Émilion, France.

What foods pair well with Emigre Red? Braised lamb shanks complement the wine's herbal spice and dark fruit depth. Slow-smoked beef brisket matches its richness and smoky undertones. Aged cheddar or Gruyère offset the tannin structure. Duck confit echoes the wine's savory, earthy character. Dark chocolate desserts with a high cacao percentage harmonize with the espresso and blackberry notes on the finish.

What sizes does Emigre Red come in? Emigre Red is available in the standard 750ml bottle format.

Is Emigre Red worth the price? Emigre Red positions as a premium expression within Barossa Valley reds, and its ultra-low yields, labor-intensive hand-sorting, and French oak program justify its place in that tier. Critical scores of 93 points (International Wine Cellar), 92 points (Robert Parker), and 91 points (Wine Spectator) provide strong third-party validation for the quality delivered.

Why Emigre Red?

Few Australian wines carry this level of French winemaking DNA. Jonathan Maltus brought techniques honed in Saint-Émilion—cold pre-maceration, delestages, pigeage—to Barossa Valley vineyards yielding less than one ton per acre, producing a wine of unusual concentration and structural polish. The six-varietal blend itself is uncommon, layering the warmth of Grenache-Shiraz-Mourvèdre with the tannic backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon, the rustic depth of Carignan, and a surprising aromatic lift from Muscadelle. Backed by a 93-point score from International Wine Cellar and Double Gold at the China Wine & Spirits Awards, Emigre Red earns its reputation as one of Barossa's more intellectually ambitious reds.
