Blue Moon Belgian White 4Pk Cans is an unfiltered Belgian-style witbier at 5.4% ABV, sold here as four 16 oz cans. A 1995 World Beer Championship gold medalist in the White Beer category, it remains one of the most widely recognized American interpretations of the classic Belgian wheat ale.

Quick Facts: ABV: 5.4%  |  Origin: Denver, Colorado, USA  |  Style: Belgian-Style Wheat Ale (Witbier)  |  Brewery: Blue Moon Brewing Company (Molson Coors)

Production & Heritage

Blue Moon Belgian White was created in 1995 by brewmaster Keith Villa at the Sandlot Brewery inside Coors Field in Denver, Colorado. The grain bill combines malted barley, white wheat, and oats, spiced with coriander and — in a deliberate departure from tradition — Valencia orange peel rather than the bitter Curaçao orange peel common in Belgian originals. The beer is left unfiltered, allowing suspended yeast and protein to produce its signature hazy, cloudy appearance and a creamier mouthfeel than most filtered wheat beers. Blue Moon Brewing Company operates under Molson Coors ownership, with production also taking place at the Molson Brewery in Montreal, Quebec.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: A zesty orange fruitiness leads, backed by a light, spicy wheat character. Faint coriander and a hint of fresh bread dough round out the nose.

Taste: The entry is bright and citrus-forward, with sweet orange and soft peach flavors arriving on the mid-palate. Wheat and oat contributions build a smooth, creamy body, while coriander adds a subtle spice accent that prevents the sweetness from becoming one-dimensional. Breadiness emerges toward the finish.

Finish: Clean and moderately short, with a light, pleasant bitterness that balances the residual citrus sweetness. A faint wheaty grain note lingers.

How to Drink Blue Moon

The classic serve is poured into a wide-mouthed glass and garnished with a fresh orange slice, which amplifies the citrus aromatics and adds visual appeal. Blue Moon also works well in several beer cocktails: a Blue Moon Shandy, mixing equal parts beer and fresh lemonade for a bright summer cooler; a Beermosa, substituting it for champagne alongside orange juice at brunch, where the wheat and orange peel flavors integrate naturally; and a Radler, blended with grapefruit soda for a lighter, effervescent sipper.

Best For

  • Introducing craft-curious drinkers to Belgian-style wheat ales
  • Backyard grilling sessions and warm-weather cookouts
  • Brunch pairings alongside egg dishes or fruit-forward plates
  • Stocking a party cooler with a universally approachable beer

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Blue Moon taste like? Blue Moon Belgian White delivers a citrus-driven flavor profile led by sweet orange and peach, supported by creamy wheat and oat body and a subtle coriander spice. It finishes clean with a light bitterness.

How does Blue Moon compare to Shock Top? Both are American-brewed Belgian-style witbiers, but Blue Moon uses Valencia orange peel and oats for a creamier, slightly sweeter profile, while Shock Top (produced by Anheuser-Busch) tends to lean more aggressively into citrus and spice. Blue Moon also has a longer pedigree, having launched in 1995 compared to Shock Top's 2006 debut.

Is Blue Moon good for beginners? Blue Moon is one of the most approachable Belgian-style wheat beers available, with its moderate 5.4% ABV, smooth body, and familiar citrus flavors making it an easy entry point for drinkers new to the witbier style.

Where is Blue Moon made? Blue Moon was originally created at the Sandlot Brewery at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, where it continues to be brewed. Production also takes place at the Molson Brewery in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, under Molson Coors ownership.

What foods pair well with Blue Moon? Grilled shrimp or fish tacos complement its citrus brightness. Light salads with vinaigrette mirror the beer's acidity. Soft cheeses like goat cheese or brie echo its creamy texture. Eggs Benedict or quiche match well at brunch, and Thai or Vietnamese dishes with fresh herbs play off the coriander spice notes.

What sizes does Blue Moon come in? Blue Moon Belgian White is widely available in 4-packs of 16 oz cans, 6-packs of 12 oz bottles, 12-packs, and single 22 oz bottles, among other formats.

Is Blue Moon worth the price? Blue Moon positions as a widely available, moderately priced craft-style wheat beer that delivers consistent quality and broad appeal, sitting in the accessible tier between domestic lagers and specialty craft releases.

Why Blue Moon?

Keith Villa's decision to swap traditional Curaçao orange peel for sweeter Valencia orange peel was a small change with outsized impact — it gave Blue Moon a rounder, more approachable citrus character that helped define the American witbier category. The addition of oats to the grain bill creates a creamy body uncommon in many competing wheat beers. A gold medal at the 1995 World Beer Championship validated the recipe early, and decades later, its unfiltered haze and orange-forward profile remain the benchmark against which most American Belgian whites are measured.
