Ardbeg Blaaack 750ML is a 46% ABV Islay single malt Scotch whisky finished in New Zealand Pinot Noir casks — a first in the distillery's history. This limited expression earned a Silver Award at the International Wine & Spirit Competition and stands out for its unusual collision of deep red-fruit character with Ardbeg's signature heavy peat smoke.

Production & Heritage
Ardbeg Distillery sits on the southern coast of Islay and has been producing heavily peated single malt since 1815. Now owned by LVMH through its subsidiary The Glenmorangie Company, the distillery runs traditional copper pot stills and uses 100% malted barley. Blaaack was released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Ardbeg Committee, Ardbeg's global fan community, and marks the first time the distillery matured whisky in Pinot Noir casks sourced from New Zealand. A higher-strength Committee Release bottled at 50.7% ABV was also produced in limited quantities.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Woodsmoke opens immediately, layered with cedar, coal fire, and a distinct canned fruit cocktail sweetness. A mild antiseptic note emerges underneath — classic Ardbeg medicinal peat.
Taste: The entry is supple and surprisingly sweet, with orchard fruits and velvety summer-fruit pudding notes arriving first. Mid-palate, an emerging wave of peppery, prickly peat smoke takes over, joined by bitter cherry, raspberry and blackberry confit, and a savory smoked paprika edge. Cracked black peppercorns add spice throughout, creating a persistent push-and-pull between soft campfire smoke and dark fruit.
Finish: Long and sooty, with lingering charcoal and traces of barbecued meat. The Pinot Noir influence resurfaces as a faint berry sweetness that slowly fades under Ardbeg's trademark ashy peat.
How to Drink Ardbeg Blaaack
Neat with a few drops of water is the ideal starting point — water opens up the fruit-smoke interplay and tempers the 46% ABV without diluting the complexity. On the rocks works well for warmer weather sipping. In cocktails, the dark-fruit and smoke profile makes Blaaack a compelling choice in a Penicillin, where its berry notes amplify the honey-ginger base; a Blood and Sand, where the Pinot Noir cask finish naturally complements the cherry liqueur component; or a smoky twist on a Rob Roy, replacing standard Scotch with Blaaack for added depth and peat intensity.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Ardbeg Blaaack taste like? Ardbeg Blaaack delivers heavy Islay peat smoke interwoven with dark berry fruit, bitter cherry, and cracked black pepper. The Pinot Noir cask finish introduces a velvety sweetness not typical of the Ardbeg range, creating an unusual fruit-and-smoke duality.
How does Ardbeg Blaaack compare to Lagavulin 16? Both are peated Islay single malts, but Blaaack is a no-age-statement expression finished in Pinot Noir wine casks, giving it pronounced dark-fruit notes that Lagavulin 16's ex-bourbon and sherry maturation does not deliver. Lagavulin 16 tends toward drier maritime smoke and iodine, while Blaaack leans fruitier and more peppery.
Is Ardbeg Blaaack good for sipping neat? Yes — at 46% ABV and non-chill-filtered, Blaaack is bottled at a strength that rewards neat drinking. A few drops of water help unlock additional fruit sweetness behind the peat.
Where is Ardbeg Blaaack made? Ardbeg Blaaack is distilled at Ardbeg Distillery on the southern coast of the Isle of Islay, Scotland. The whisky is pot-still distilled from 100% malted barley and finished in Pinot Noir casks imported from New Zealand.
What foods pair well with Ardbeg Blaaack? Smoked duck breast complements the peat-and-fruit axis; aged Comté or Gruyère balances the smoke with nutty richness; dark chocolate (70%+ cacao) mirrors the bitter cherry notes; grilled lamb chops with rosemary echo the savory, herbaceous side; and blackberry compote or berry tart brings out the wine-cask fruitiness.
What sizes does Ardbeg Blaaack come in? The standard release is available in a 750ml bottle at 46% ABV. The limited Committee Release was bottled at 50.7% ABV, also in 750ml format.
Is Ardbeg Blaaack worth the price? Blaaack positions as a limited-edition, premium expression within the Ardbeg lineup, priced above core bottlings like the Ten Year Old and Wee Beastie but below ultra-rare annual releases. Its unique Pinot Noir cask finish and limited availability give it strong collectibility, and the liquid quality — recognized with an IWSC Silver — supports the premium positioning.
Why Ardbeg Blaaack?
The defining differentiator is straightforward: no other Ardbeg expression has been matured in New Zealand Pinot Noir casks. That single production decision transforms a recognizable Ardbeg peat profile into something distinctly different — darker, fruitier, and layered with berry and spice notes that have no equivalent in the core range. Averaging 93 points across critics and awarded an IWSC Silver, Blaaack earned serious recognition as more than a novelty release. For collectors and peat enthusiasts looking for an Islay malt that genuinely breaks from convention, this limited bottling delivers a rare intersection of heavy smoke and wine-cask influence that few distilleries have attempted at this level.
