About Cherry Liqueurs

Cherry liqueurs fall into a few families. Maraschino is distilled from sour marasca cherries, including pits, which gives it a clear color and a signature floral, almond-like note. Red cherry liqueurs, such as Danish Cherry Heering and Luxardo Morlacco, are made by steeping cherries in spirit for a rich, dark result. Eastern European wishniak and nalewka styles lean tart, built on sour cherries. Kirsch, by contrast, is an unsweetened cherry brandy.

Maraschino is essential behind the bar. The Last Word mixes equal parts gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino and lime, and the Martinez stirs gin and sweet vermouth with a bar spoon of maraschino and a dash of bitters. Luxardo, Maraska and Lazzaroni all make maraschino worth keeping on hand.

Red cherry liqueur is the star of the Blood and Sand (Scotch, sweet vermouth, orange juice and Heering) and is a key part of the Singapore Sling. For sipping, try Nalewka Lwowecka Cherry or Maraska Wishniak slightly chilled after dinner.

Cherry Liqueurs FAQ

What is maraschino liqueur?

Maraschino liqueur is a clear cherry liqueur distilled from sour marasca cherries, giving it a dry-leaning, floral and nutty flavor rather than a candy cherry taste. Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur is the classic bartender choice, with Maraska Maraschino and Lazzaroni Maraschino as other traditional options for Aviations and Last Words.

What is the best cherry liqueur for a Blood and Sand?

Heering Cherry Liqueur is the traditional choice for a Blood and Sand, adding dark cherry richness that balances Scotch, sweet vermouth and orange juice. Luxardo Morlacco Cherry Sangue Liqueur is a good alternative with a similar deep red style. Maraschino is not a substitute here, since its flavor is very different.

What is the difference between kirsch and cherry liqueur?

Kirsch is a clear, unsweetened brandy distilled from cherries, so it is dry and spirit-forward. Cherry liqueur is sweetened and lower in strength. Schladerer Edel-Kirsch is a German kirschwasser for fondue, desserts and sipping, while Heering Cherry Liqueur or Joseph Cartron Creme de Cerise bring sweet cherry flavor to cocktails.

What is wishniak?

Wishniak is a sweet sour cherry liqueur in the Eastern European tradition, made from cherries known as višnja or wiśnia. It is tart, deep red and usually sipped chilled or over ice. Maraska Wishniak Cherry from Croatia and Nalewka Lwowecka Cherry Liqueur from Poland are two examples on our shelf.
