How We Pick Our Single Barrels (And What We're Actually Looking For)

Single barrels

Our barrel program

We taste. We pick. You drink.

Most liquor stores sell what the distributor puts on the truck. We do things differently. Our buying team travels directly to distilleries, tastes through dozens of barrels, and selects only the ones with something special — a flavor profile you won't find in any standard release sitting on a shelf somewhere else.

Because we've spent 40+ years building relationships with distilleries across Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, and beyond, we get access to barrels that most retailers never see. Some of these are allocated products — the kind of whiskey people line up for or enter lotteries to buy. When a distillery offers us a private barrel selection from one of their rare or limited lines, our relationships and track record are what get us to the front of that list.

Every barrel pick is a one-time release. Once it's gone, it's gone — there's no calling the distillery for more. That's not marketing. That's just how single barrels work. Each one is unique, and each one is something you can only get from us.

How we select

From distillery to your shelf

Our barrel selection process is hands-on. No middlemen, no random picks — we taste everything ourselves.

1

Visit the rickhouse

We travel to the distillery and taste directly from barrels — sometimes 20+ in a single session, including rare and allocated offerings most stores never get access to.

2

Pick the standouts

We look for barrels with character that sets them apart from the standard release — unique flavor profiles you can't get off any other shelf.

3

Bottle exclusively for us

The distillery bottles our selected barrel with a Liquor Barn pick label. Limited to whatever that single barrel yields — typically 100–250 bottles.

Rare & allocated access

Bottles most stores can't get

Four decades of distillery relationships means we get offered barrels and allocations that don't show up on most retailers' radar.

Allocated single barrel selections

Some distilleries only offer private barrel selections to a handful of retailers nationwide. Our long-standing partnerships put us on that short list — giving you access to bottles from allocated lines that would otherwise require a lottery, a waitlist, or knowing the right person.

Barrel proof & cask strength exclusives

Many of our picks are bottled at barrel proof — uncut and unfiltered, exactly as they came out of the barrel. These higher-proof selections are increasingly rare as distilleries limit their cask strength offerings, and they're often the most sought-after bottles in our program.

Limited age statements & special casks

Older barrels, experimental finishes, and unusual cask types sometimes come available through our distillery contacts. When we find something exceptional — a 12-year barrel, a port-finished rye, a honey barrel from a coveted rickhouse location — we jump on it.
