The Best Rye Whiskey: Our Picks for a Manhattan, a Sazerac and Sipping Neat
Rye is the whiskey bartenders reach for first, and for good reason: it is spicier and drier than bourbon, so it stands up to vermouth, bitters and sugar. But rye is not one style. A Kentucky rye and a 95% Indiana rye taste very different, and the right one depends on what you are making. Here is how we sort the shelf at the counter. Every bottle below ships nationwide.

Best Rye for a Manhattan
A Manhattan is two parts whiskey to one part sweet vermouth, and vermouth is rich. You want a rye with the proof and spice to keep the drink from tasting like dessert. Bottled-in-bond and 100-proof ryes are the sweet spot.
The bartender's rye. At least four years old, bottled at 100 proof, and full of cocoa, baking spice and black pepper. It makes a firm, balanced Manhattan and costs less than most bottles half as good. If you only keep one rye at home, this is the one.
Now carries a seven-year age statement, which is rare at this price. Toasted oak, clove and vanilla with a thicker body than Rittenhouse. Makes a rounder, oakier Manhattan.
A softer, sweeter rye with caramel and cinnamon up front. Good for people who think rye is too sharp, and an easy Manhattan for guests who usually drink bourbon.
A Manhattan is only as good as its vermouth. Carpano Antica gives a rich, vanilla-heavy drink; Punt e Mes is more bitter and bracing. Keep the vermouth in the fridge once it's open. Find aromatic bitters in our bitters collection.
Best Rye for a Sazerac
The Sazerac is New Orleans' signature: rye, sugar, Peychaud's bitters and an absinthe rinse, served without ice. It wants a rye that is spicy but not too hot, because there is nothing to dilute it except the stir.
Named for the cocktail, and still the classic pick. Clove, anise and candied citrus, with a soft enough edge to let the Peychaud's and absinthe come through. Pair it with Peychaud's Bitters and you have the drink.
For a bolder Sazerac. The extra proof gives more spice and structure, which many bartenders prefer. If you like your Sazerac with a bite, start here.
You only need a few drops per drink. Lucid is a classic choice, and Pernod Absinthe is the traditional French option.
Best Rye Whiskey to Sip
Sipping ryes need more age and proof than cocktail ryes. Look for bottles that balance the grain's spice with some caramel and oak sweetness.
Rittenhouse's older, stronger sibling from Heaven Hill. Six years and 110 proof bring dark chocolate, honey and a long rye-spice finish. Our top pick for sipping, and it makes a luxurious Manhattan.
A single-barrel rye that is soft, round and easy to like. Butterscotch, citrus peel and gentle spice. The bottle we hand to bourbon drinkers who want to try rye neat.
Distilled in Chicago from 100% organic rye and aged at least four years in a bonded warehouse. Vanilla, fresh grain and white pepper, with a cleaner, lighter profile than Kentucky ryes. A great bottle for the hometown crowd.
Best Rye Whiskey Under $30
A 65% rye mash bill with Old Forester's signature banana and cherry notes. Fruity, spicy and at full proof. One of the most fun ryes on the shelf for the price.
The best-known 95% rye. Dill, mint and black pepper, bright and dry. Great in an Old Fashioned or a highball with ginger ale.
One of America's oldest whiskey brands, and an honest, lighter rye. Rye bread and gentle spice. Our go-to for highballs and big-batch party drinks.
Best Splurge Rye
Single barrel, non-chill filtered and bottled at 104 proof. Rich caramel, dark cherry and a big spice finish. This is the rye we pour for people who think they don't like rye.
One of the bottles that made premium rye a category. 100% rye, aged ten years: orange peel, caramel, allspice and a long, warm finish. A great gift for someone who already loves whiskey.
Rittenhouse, Sazerac Rye and Bulleit Rye in one set: a bonded Kentucky rye, the Sazerac namesake and a 95% rye. Everything you need to make a Manhattan, a Sazerac and an Old Fashioned, priced below the three bottles bought separately.
95% Rye vs. Kentucky Style: Rye Styles Explained
What makes it rye whiskey
American rye whiskey is made from at least 51% rye, aged in new charred oak containers and bottled at 80 proof or more. "Straight" rye has been aged at least two years. The rest of the mash is usually corn and malted barley, and how much rye goes in changes everything.
Kentucky style (51% to 65% rye)
Many Kentucky distillers use a "barely legal" mash bill with just over half rye and plenty of corn. These ryes taste closer to bourbon: caramel and vanilla up front, spice on the finish. Rittenhouse, Pikesville and Elijah Craig are classic examples. Great for Manhattans, and a good first step from bourbon.
95% rye (Indiana)
The distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, now known as Ross & Squibb, makes a 95% rye, 5% malted barley whiskey that many brands buy and bottle. It is bright and herbal, with dill, mint and a peppery dryness. Bulleit Rye is the best-known example. Great for Old Fashioneds and highballs.
100% rye
All rye, no corn. Often bold, grainy and spicy. WhistlePig and KOVAL are both 100% rye whiskeys, and they show how differently the same grain can taste.
Rye vs. bourbon
Bourbon is at least 51% corn, so it is sweeter and rounder. Rye is drier and spicier. For a side-by-side comparison, see our rye vs. bourbon guide.
How to Drink Rye Whiskey
- Manhattan: two ounces of rye, one ounce of sweet vermouth, two dashes of aromatic bitters. Stir with ice, strain and garnish with a cherry.
- Sazerac: rinse a chilled glass with absinthe. Stir two ounces of rye, a sugar cube or a quarter ounce of simple syrup and three dashes of Peychaud's with ice. Strain into the glass, no ice, and express a lemon peel over the top.
- Old Fashioned: two ounces of rye, a quarter ounce of simple syrup, two dashes of bitters, over a big cube with an orange peel.
- Neat or with water: one to two ounces, and a few drops of water for anything over 100 proof.
- Highball: rye and ginger ale with a lemon wedge. Simple and great with lighter ryes like Old Overholt.
