Production & Heritage

Volcán de Mi Tierra launched in 2017 as a collaboration between the Gallardo family — tequila producers in the shadow of the Tequila Volcano for over 300 years — and Moët Hennessy, making it the first tequila in the LVMH luxury spirits portfolio. The Reposado expression draws Blue Weber agave from two distinct Jalisco terroirs: the mineral-rich volcanic Lowlands (El Valle) and the iron-rich clay soils of the Highlands (Los Altos). After harvest, the agave is cooked, fermented, and distilled at Agrotequilera de Jalisco in Huaxtla, then rested for 135 days in a combination of new American and French oak barrels before a final blending step that balances the character of each terroir and wood type.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Cooked agave dominates the nose, followed by warm caramel, light vanilla from barrel contact, and a layer of dried herbs. Ripe fruits — apple and pineapple — emerge alongside a faint peppery tang as the glass opens up.

Taste: The entry is sweet and rounded, with honeyed cooked agave and caramel giving way to baking spice and toasted oak at mid-palate. A brûléed citrus note surfaces alongside subtle floral tones, while hints of jalapeño-like heat from the Lowland agave add complexity against the fruit-forward peach and pineapple contributed by Highland plants.

Finish: Medium in length with a full, honeyed mouthfeel and gentle warmth. Vanilla, black pepper, and a clean mineral undertone linger as the oak slowly fades.

How to Drink Volcán Reposado

Neat or with a single ice cube is the most rewarding way to experience the dual-terroir character and barrel nuances. A few drops of water can further open the caramel and fruit notes without dulling the spice.

  • Oaxaca Old Fashioned: The toasted oak and honeyed sweetness stand up to mezcal and mole bitters, adding body without losing agave identity.
  • Paloma: Brûléed citrus and peppery spice amplify the grapefruit soda backbone and keep the drink from tipping too sweet.
  • Tequila Manhattan: The French oak vanilla and baking spice integrate seamlessly with sweet vermouth, producing a richer, more layered variation on the classic.

  • Marking milestones with a Double Gold–winning spirit that carries real provenance

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Volcán Reposado taste like? It leads with cooked agave, caramel, and honey, develops into baking spice and toasted oak at mid-palate, and finishes with vanilla, black pepper, and a clean mineral note.

How does Volcán Reposado compare to Don Julio Reposado? Don Julio Reposado sources agave exclusively from the Highlands of Atotonilco, resulting in a lighter, citrus-forward profile, while Volcán blends Lowland and Highland agave for a broader flavor spectrum with more pronounced oak and spice influence. Both are bottled at 40% ABV, but Volcán's 135-day rest in both American and French oak gives it a more layered barrel character.

Is Volcán Reposado good for sipping neat? Yes — its 135 days of oak aging deliver enough complexity and smooth texture to reward slow, undiluted sipping, while the 40% ABV keeps heat manageable.

Where is Volcán Reposado made? It is produced at Agrotequilera de Jalisco (NOM 1523) in Huaxtla, Jalisco, Mexico, using Blue Weber agave sourced from both the Lowlands and Highlands of the state.

What foods pair well with Volcán Reposado? Grilled carne asada benefits from the smoky oak and pepper; mole negro echoes the tequila's caramel and baking spice; aged Manchego mirrors its vanilla and nuttiness; grilled pineapple salsa highlights the tropical fruit notes; and dark chocolate with sea salt complements the honeyed finish and mineral undertones.

What sizes does Volcán Reposado come in? The standard offering is a 750ml bottle, which is the most widely available format.

Is Volcán Reposado worth the price? It positions as a premium reposado within a competitive mid-shelf tier. The dual-terroir sourcing, dual-oak aging program, LVMH-backed quality control, and consistent Double Gold recognition at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition give it strong value relative to similarly priced competitors.

Why Volcán Reposado?

Few reposados on the market deliberately blend agave from Jalisco's two major growing zones before aging, and fewer still rest the result in both American and French oak. That dual-terroir, dual-barrel approach is the defining move here — it produces a reposado with broader flavor architecture than single-origin alternatives. Back-to-back Double Gold medals at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the 2025 Agavos Awards, along with an earlier 2021 SFWSC Gold and a Drinkhacker rating of A, confirm the consistency of the blend year over year. For drinkers who want a reposado that reflects the full range of Jalisco's agave landscape rather than a single corner of it, Volcán delivers that breadth in a polished, well-structured package.
