Description

Tyskie 6Pk is a six-pack of Poland's flagship all-malt pale lager, brewed at approximately 5.5% ABV in Tychy, Upper Silesia. Tyskie Gronie holds the distinction of being the only two-time Grand Prix winner in the 120-plus-year history of the Brewing Industry International Awards — often called the "Beer Oscars" — earning gold in London (2002) and Munich (2005).

Quick Facts: ABV: ~5.5%  |  Origin: Tychy, Upper Silesia, Poland  |  Style: All-Malt Pale Lager  |  Brewery: Tyskie Browary Książęce (Kompania Piwowarska / Asahi Group)

Production & Heritage

Tyskie Browary Książęce — the Prince's Breweries of Tychy — was founded in 1629, making it one of the oldest continuously operating breweries in Poland. Today the brewery operates under Kompania Piwowarska, which became part of Japan's Asahi Breweries group in 2017. In a notable quality move, Tyskie Gronie dropped glucose and sugar adjuncts from its recipe and transitioned to an all-malt formulation using only malted barley, hops, hop extract, water, and natural yeast fermentation. This shift elevated the body and malt character of the beer considerably, distancing it from the lighter adjunct lagers common in mass-market brewing.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Soft cereal grain and fresh bread crust lead the nose, followed by delicate floral hop aromas. A gentle hint of green apple rounds out the bouquet without overwhelming the malt backbone.

Taste: The entry is clean and lightly sweet, with pale malt and a faint sweetcorn note providing an accessible foundation. At mid-palate, balanced bitterness emerges alongside subtle touches of apple and banana, building toward a crisp, tangy peak that keeps each sip refreshing.

Finish: The finish is short and remarkably clean, with minimal aftertaste — a hallmark of well-attenuated pale lagers. A whisper of malt lingers briefly before the palate resets completely.

How to Drink Tyskie

Serve Tyskie well chilled, between 38–42°F (3–6°C), in a tall pilsner glass or clean pint glass to appreciate its golden color and modest foam cap. This is a straight-from-the-fridge beer at heart, best enjoyed cold and unadorned. For a Shandy, its clean malt profile pairs naturally with lemonade on a hot afternoon. In a Michelada, the mild bitterness stands up to lime juice, hot sauce, and Worcestershire without clashing. And in a Radler, Tyskie's light sweetness blends seamlessly with grapefruit or citrus soda for a low-effort summer drink.

Best For

  • Introducing friends to authentic Polish lager at a backyard cookout
  • Pairing with Eastern European comfort food like pierogi, kielbasa, or bigos
  • Stocking a party cooler with a reliable, crowd-friendly import
  • Gifting to a beer drinker curious about traditional European brewing heritage

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Tyskie taste like? Tyskie is a clean, lightly malty pale lager with soft bread-crust sweetness, mild floral hops, hints of green apple and banana, and a crisp, refreshingly dry finish. It sits on the approachable end of the European lager spectrum — balanced, never aggressive.

How does Tyskie compare to Żywiec? Both are iconic Polish lagers, but Żywiec (5.6% ABV) tends to lean hoppier and slightly more robust, while Tyskie emphasizes clean malt character and a lighter, crisper body. Tyskie's two Grand Prix wins at the Brewing Industry International Awards give it an edge in international competition pedigree.

Is Tyskie good for casual drinking? Absolutely — its mild bitterness, clean malt profile, and low complexity make it a natural session beer suited for social settings where easy drinkability is the priority.

Where is Tyskie made? Tyskie is brewed at Tyskie Browary Książęce in the city of Tychy, located in the Upper Silesia region of southern Poland. The brewery has occupied the same site since its founding in 1629.

What foods pair well with Tyskie? Grilled kielbasa benefits from the beer's carbonation and malt sweetness cutting through smoky fat. Pierogi — especially potato and cheese — mirror the soft cereal notes. Fried fish or fish and chips work well, as the crisp finish cleanses the palate. Mild cheeses like Gouda or Edam complement the malt without overpowering the hop character. Even a simple soft pretzel with mustard makes an ideal low-effort pairing.

What sizes does Tyskie come in? Tyskie is widely available in six-packs of cans or bottles, as well as single-serve cans and 500ml (16.9 oz) cans; format availability varies by market.

Is Tyskie worth the price? Tyskie positions as an entry-level imported lager, typically priced in line with other mainstream European imports. For a beer carrying nearly 400 years of brewing heritage and an all-malt recipe, it delivers strong value in its tier.

Why Tyskie?

No other beer in the world has won the Grand Prix at the Brewing Industry International Awards twice — Tyskie accomplished that in 2002 and 2005, a record that still stands. The shift to an all-malt recipe removed the adjuncts that once blurred its identity, giving the current Gronie a cleaner, more distinctly malty character that honors the brewery's roots in Silesian brewing tradition. Nearly four centuries of continuous production at the same Tychy site lend genuine heritage to a brand that could otherwise be dismissed as just another mass-market lager. For drinkers seeking an honest, well-made Polish pale lager with a competitive pedigree most craft breweries would envy, the six-pack delivers exactly that.
