Description

Tenshen White Blend is a Rhône-inspired white wine from California's Central Coast blending Viognier, Grenache Blanc, and Chardonnay at 14.7% ABV. Born from the collaboration between winemaker Joey Tensley of Tensley Wines and Alex Guarachi of Guarachi Family Wines, Tenshen is built around an intentional philosophy of tension — picking grapes at a just-ripe-enough precipice to preserve edgy, mineral-driven acidity while allowing rich fruit character to develop. The 2014 vintage earned 92 points and the #29 spot on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2015, while the 2015 vintage repeated at 92 points and landed at #31 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2016.

Tasting Notes:

Aroma: Honeysuckle and lemongrass open the nose immediately, followed by lemon curd, sea spray, and light lemon-butter undertones. There is a floral headiness here that draws you in without feeling heavy or cloying.

Taste: The entry is bright with tart tangerine and fresh apple flesh, shifting at mid-palate toward ripe apricot and peach flavors with a fleshy, generous core. A steely minerality emerges at the peak alongside dried citrus, peach skin, and subtle vanilla bean accents from the neutral oak aging. The interplay between ripe fruit and chalky mineral tension is what gives this wine its distinctive identity.

Finish: Medium-long with lingering lemon peel, chamomile, and a thread of dried pear that fades gradually. The finish stays fresh and clean rather than heavy, carried by that persistent mineral edge.

How to Drink Tenshen White Blend:

Serve chilled to around 50–55°F to let the aromatics fully express while keeping the acidity taut. This wine shines on its own as an aperitif or alongside food, but it also works in a White Wine Spritzer where its floral character holds up against soda water and citrus. Try it in a White Sangria with sliced stone fruit, lemon, and fresh herbs — the apricot and peach notes amplify beautifully. It also makes an unexpectedly compelling base for a Wine-Forward French 75, replacing Champagne with something richer and more textured.

Best For:

  • Warm-weather patio drinking and outdoor entertaining
  • Seafood dinners and Mediterranean-style meals
  • Wine club nights exploring Rhône-style California whites
  • Gifting to anyone curious about alternatives to mainstream Chardonnay

Frequently Asked Questions:

What does Tenshen White Blend taste like? Expect ripe apricot, peach, and tangerine flavors layered with honeysuckle, vanilla bean, and a distinctive chalky minerality. The overall impression is aromatic and juicy but balanced by bright acidity and a fresh, clean finish.

How does Tenshen White Blend compare to Tablas Creek Esprit de Tablas Blanc? Both are Rhône-style white blends from California's Central Coast, but Tenshen leads with Viognier (60%) for a more aromatic, fruit-forward profile, while Tablas Creek typically leads with Roussanne for a weightier, more textural approach. Tenshen also tends to be significantly more affordable, making it a strong entry point into California Rhône whites.

Is Tenshen White Blend good for beginners? Absolutely — the generous fruit character and floral aromatics make it immediately approachable, while the mineral backbone and balanced acidity give more experienced palates something to explore.

Where is Tenshen White Blend made? It is produced in Santa Barbara County on California's Central Coast through the partnership of Joey Tensley and Alex Guarachi. The wine is aged for five months in 80% neutral oak and 20% stainless steel to preserve freshness while adding subtle texture.

What foods pair well with Tenshen White Blend? Grilled shrimp with lemon and herbs, roasted chicken with stone fruit salsa, seared scallops, Thai green curry with coconut milk, and aged Gruyère or mild goat cheese.

Why Buy Tenshen?

Tenshen earned consecutive appearances on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list in both 2015 and 2016, scoring 92 points each year — a rare achievement for any wine at its price point. Winemaker Joey Tensley has built a reputation in Santa Barbara County for Rhône varieties, and his collaboration with Guarachi Family Wines brings that expertise into a widely available format. The blend of 60% Viognier, 30% Grenache Blanc, and 10% Chardonnay is calibrated to deliver both aromatic intensity and structural freshness. For drinkers looking beyond standard Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, Tenshen represents one of the most accessible and critically recognized Rhône-style whites coming out of California.
