Production & Heritage
Founded in 1897 in Rothes, Moray, Speyburn is one of Speyside's older working distilleries, currently owned by Inver House Distillers. The whisky is distilled from 100% malted barley in traditional copper pot stills and — unusually for any modern Scottish distillery — still employs worm tub condensers, a traditional cooling method that imparts distinctive copper character to the spirit. Arranta Casks, named from the Gaelic word for "bold," is matured exclusively in hand-selected, first-fill ex-bourbon American oak casks that were air-dried before filling, each marked with the distillery manager's distinctive "A-star" seal of approval before entering the warehouse.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Toffee and vanilla lead immediately, followed by honey, coconut, and warm baking spice. Deeper exploration reveals buttery wholegrain shortbread and a delicate thread of rose water beneath the sweetness.
Taste: The entry is sweet and inviting — vanilla wafer and under-baked banana bread — before a rich mid-palate of malt syrup, cinnamon, and nutmeg develops. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and carries more weight than many Speyside expressions at similar strength, with banoffee and banana flambé notes emerging as the palate opens.
Finish: Long and warming, with lingering citrus peel, honey, and a trailing baking-spice note. The first-fill bourbon cask influence stays present through the close, leaving clean vanilla and oak.
How to Drink Arranta Casks
At 46% ABV, Arranta Casks drinks well neat, where the full-bodied bourbon-cask character comes through most clearly; a few drops of water further open the toffee and honey notes without thinning the texture. On the rocks is a solid alternative in warmer months. A Scotch Highball works particularly well here — the bold profile stands up to carbonation without losing definition. In a Rob Roy, the vanilla and spice dovetail naturally with sweet vermouth. The honey-forward character also makes it a strong fit for a Penicillin, where it pairs seamlessly with honey-ginger syrup and lemon.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Arranta Casks taste like? Arranta Casks delivers a rich, full-bodied profile dominated by vanilla, toffee, and banana bread, with underpinning notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and honey from first-fill bourbon cask maturation.
How does Arranta Casks compare to Glenlivet 12? Glenlivet 12 is bottled at 40% ABV and leans toward a lighter, more floral Speyside style, while Arranta Casks at 46% ABV is noticeably bolder and more bourbon-influenced, with heavier vanilla and baking-spice notes. Both are accessible Speyside single malts, but Arranta Casks tends toward richer, more dessert-like territory.
Is Arranta Casks good for sipping neat? Yes — the 46% ABV provides enough body and intensity for neat sipping without excessive heat, and the first-fill bourbon cask maturation delivers a smooth, sweet profile that needs little or no dilution to enjoy.
Where is Arranta Casks made? Arranta Casks is produced at the Speyburn distillery in Rothes, Moray, located in the heart of Scotland's Speyside region — one of the country's most concentrated whisky-producing areas.
What foods pair well with Arranta Casks? Vanilla crème brûlée echoes the bourbon-cask sweetness; smoked salmon benefits from the whisky's spice and citrus; dark chocolate with sea salt complements the toffee and honey; apple tart mirrors the baking-spice profile; and aged cheddar provides a savory counterpoint to the malt's sweetness.

Is Arranta Casks worth the price? Arranta Casks positions as a value-tier Speyside single malt that consistently punches above its price point, as evidenced by its Double Gold at the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Gold at the International Wine & Spirit Competition, and 94 points from the Ultimate Spirits Challenge.
Why Arranta Casks?
The exclusive use of hand-selected, first-fill ex-bourbon American oak casks sets Arranta Casks apart from the many NAS Speyside malts that rely on mixed or refill cask types. Speyburn's continued use of worm tub condensers — increasingly rare among Scottish distilleries — adds a layer of character that distinguishes the house spirit before it ever reaches a cask. The competition record speaks for itself: a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Gold medals from the International Wine & Spirit Competition and New York International Spirits Competition, and 94 points from the Ultimate Spirits Challenge. For drinkers seeking a bold, bourbon-influenced Scotch without paying age-statement premiums, this bottling makes a compelling case for what thoughtful cask selection can achieve.
