Quick Facts: ABV: 46% | Origin: Speyside, Scotland | Age: 15 Years | Distillery: Speyburn
Production & Heritage
Speyburn Distillery was founded in 1897 in the town of Rothes, in the heart of Speyside, and is now owned by Inver House Distillers. The distillery draws all of its production water from the Granty Burn stream — a source unique to Speyburn among Scottish distilleries. A defining element of its character comes from the use of traditional worm tub condensers on the spirit stills, each comprising over 100 metres of copper pipe, which produce a distinctively light yet flavoursome new make spirit. For the 15 Year expression, that spirit matures in a vatting of ex-American oak bourbon barrels and ex-Spanish oak sherry casks, bottled at a generous 46% ABV without chill filtration, giving the whisky fuller body and texture than many Speyside competitors at this age.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: The nose opens with orchard fruits — ripe pear and baked apple — before moving into honeyed citrus and vanilla pod. Beneath those brighter notes, rich dark chocolate, raisins, and warm oak provide depth and complexity.
Taste: The entry is soft and malty, led by toffee and ripe orange peel. At mid-palate, creamy malt and baked apple expand with a subtle leather quality, while gentle baking spice and vanilla build toward a balanced peak. The 46% ABV gives the flavors real weight without any burn.
Finish: Medium-long, smooth, and warming, with lingering oak sweetness and orchard fruit that slowly fades. A trace of spice and toffee remains well after the final sip.
How to Drink Speyburn 15
At 46% and non-chill-filtered, this whisky is built for sipping neat or with a few drops of water to open the Spanish oak influence. A single large ice cube works well in warmer weather without muting the complexity. For cocktails, the Speyburn 15 brings depth to a Rob Roy, where its toffee and fruit notes complement sweet vermouth beautifully. It also elevates a Blood and Sand, with the orange and chocolate character pairing naturally with cherry liqueur and blood orange juice. A simple Scotch Highball with quality soda water lets the lighter orchard fruit and malt qualities shine through.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Speyburn 15 taste like? Speyburn 15 leads with soft toffee, ripe pear, and baked apple, layered with orange peel, vanilla, and gentle baking spice. The dual-cask maturation adds richness without overwhelming the classic Speyside fruit-and-malt character.
How does Speyburn 15 compare to Highland Park 15? Both are 15-year-old single malts, but Highland Park 15 leans heavier into smoke and heather honey from its Orkney origins, while Speyburn 15 is a purer Speyside expression with no peat influence and more emphasis on orchard fruit, toffee, and creamy malt. Highland Park 15 typically carries a higher price point as well.
Is Speyburn 15 good for sipping neat? Yes — bottled at 46% without chill filtration, it has enough body and complexity to reward unhurried neat sipping, and a few drops of water release additional fruit and chocolate aromas from the Spanish oak influence.
Where is Speyburn 15 made? Speyburn 15 is produced at Speyburn Distillery in Rothes, Speyside, Scotland — one of the most concentrated whisky-producing regions in the world. The distillery has been operating on the same site since its founding in 1897.
What foods pair well with Speyburn 15? Aged cheddar or Comté cheese highlights the toffee and oak notes. Dark chocolate truffles echo the cocoa and raisin qualities found on the nose. Roasted pork belly with apple chutney mirrors the orchard fruit character. Crème brûlée complements the vanilla and caramelized sweetness, while smoked salmon provides a savory contrast to the whisky's fruit-forward palate.
What sizes does Speyburn 15 come in? Speyburn 15 Year is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle size.
Is Speyburn 15 worth the price? Speyburn 15 positions as a mid-range age-statement Speyside single malt, often priced below comparable 15-year-old expressions from more heavily marketed distilleries. Its 96-point Double Gold at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition suggests it punches well above its price tier in terms of quality.
Why Speyburn 15?
Few 15-year-old Speyside single malts arrive at 46%, non-chill-filtered, and matured in both American and Spanish oak — a combination that delivers real substance without sacrificing the elegance the region is known for. The traditional worm tub condensers at Speyburn create a spirit profile distinct from the shell-and-tube systems used by most modern Speyside distilleries, giving the whisky a lighter, more textured character that develops beautifully over fifteen years in wood. A string of Gold Medals at the International Wine & Spirit Competition and International Spirits Challenge, capped by a Double Gold and 96 points at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, confirms what the liquid has long suggested: Speyburn 15 is one of the most undervalued aged single malts in Scotland. For drinkers looking beyond the usual Speyside names, this bottle makes a compelling argument on its own terms.
