Description

Soljans Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, aromatic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, available in a standard 750ml bottle. The 2022 vintage earned 93/100 from Cameron Douglas MS, and the winery has been family-owned and operated for five generations — a genuine rarity among New Zealand producers in this value tier.

Quick Facts: ABV: ~12.5%  |  Origin: Marlborough, New Zealand  |  Style: Dry Sauvignon Blanc  |  Producer: Soljans Estate Winery

Production & Heritage

Soljans Estate Winery is based in Kumeu, within the Auckland region, and has been a family operation for five generations. While the winery itself sits in Kumeu — where the nearby Tasman Sea moderates temperatures and clay-and-loam soils with excellent drainage shape much of their viticulture — the Sauvignon Blanc fruit is sourced from Marlborough, New Zealand's premier region for the varietal. Long summer days and cool nights in Marlborough enhance ripening and flavor development, producing the intense aromatic character the region is known for.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with ripe passionfruit and guava, followed by lemon peel, kaffir lime leaves, and cut grass. A thread of white pepper lifts the aromatics and adds unexpected complexity.

Taste: On entry, bright citrus — lemon and grapefruit — gives way to cape gooseberry and tropical fruit at mid-palate. Mouth-filling acidity provides firm structure, while a stony minerality adds depth and keeps the fruit from tipping toward sweetness.

Finish: Tart and salivating with persistent fruit flavors that echo the mid-palate. Crisp and clean, with good evenness and satisfying length.

How to Drink Soljans Sauvignon Blanc

Serve well chilled between 8–10°C to highlight the aromatic intensity and preserve the crisp acidity. This wine is at its most expressive straight from the bottle without intervention. A White Wine Spritzer made with sparkling water lets the tropical fruit shine on warm afternoons. It works well in a Hugo Spritzer alongside elderflower liqueur and fresh mint, where the gooseberry notes complement the floral sweetness. For a more adventurous serve, try it in a New Zealand White Sangria with fresh kiwi, passionfruit pulp, and lime — the wine's natural tropical character amplifies those additions rather than competing with them.

Best For

  • Summer entertaining and outdoor gatherings with seafood
  • Introducing someone to classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
  • Pairing with shellfish dinners, especially green-lipped mussels or oysters
  • A reliable weeknight wine with bright, food-friendly acidity

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Soljans Sauvignon Blanc taste like? It delivers vibrant passionfruit, gooseberry, and citrus flavors with crisp acidity and a stony mineral undercurrent. The finish is tart, clean, and refreshingly persistent.

How does Soljans Sauvignon Blanc compare to Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc? Both are Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs with classic regional character, but Soljans tends to show more tropical fruit intensity with pronounced guava and passionfruit, while Oyster Bay typically leans toward a more restrained citrus-and-herb profile. Soljans also comes from a smaller, five-generation family estate rather than a large corporate producer.

Is Soljans Sauvignon Blanc good for beginners? Yes — its bright, fruit-forward style and clean acidity make it an accessible and enjoyable introduction to both Sauvignon Blanc and New Zealand wine in general.

Where is Soljans Sauvignon Blanc made? Soljans Estate Winery is located in Kumeu, in the Auckland region of New Zealand, though the Sauvignon Blanc grapes are sourced from Marlborough, the country's most celebrated region for the varietal.

What foods pair well with Soljans Sauvignon Blanc? Green-lipped mussels or oysters, where the wine's acidity cuts through brininess. Goat cheese salads, where tartness complements tangy cheese. Grilled white fish with herb butter for a classic match. Thai green curry, where the tropical fruit mirrors the dish's aromatics. Fresh ceviche, which echoes the wine's citrus-forward profile.

What sizes does Soljans Sauvignon Blanc come in? It is available in the standard 750ml bottle.

Is Soljans Sauvignon Blanc worth the price? Soljans Sauvignon Blanc positions as an accessible, entry-level Marlborough expression that consistently scores well with critics — the 2022 vintage received 93/100 from Cameron Douglas MS, which is strong for wines in this value tier.

Why Soljans Sauvignon Blanc?

Consistent critical recognition across multiple vintages is the clearest signal here, with scores from Cameron Douglas MS ranging from 88 to 93 points over more than a decade of production. Five generations of family ownership bring a personal, hands-on winemaking philosophy that larger corporate Marlborough labels simply don't replicate. The Marlborough fruit delivers the classic regional signature — intense tropical aromatics, piercing acidity, and genuine depth — while the wine remains approachable and food-friendly without sacrificing complexity for easy drinkability.
