Description

SIMI Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a 750ml Sonoma County Cabernet aged in oak, bottled at 13.5–14.5% ABV depending on vintage. Sourced in part from the acclaimed Landslide Vineyard — a site shaped by a volcanic slide from Mount St. Helena that created five distinct soil types — this wine reflects one of Alexander Valley's most geologically complex growing areas.

Quick Facts: ABV: 13.5–14.5%  |  Origin: Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, California  |  Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon  |  Producer: SIMI Winery (Constellation Brands)

Production & Heritage

SIMI Winery was founded in 1876 by Italian immigrants Giuseppe and Pietro Simi in Healdsburg, making it one of Sonoma County's oldest continuously operating wineries. Now under the ownership of Constellation Brands and guided by winemaker Rebecca Valls since 2021, the Alexander Valley Cabernet undergoes oak maturation to integrate structure and complexity. The Landslide Vineyard plays a central role: its highest elevations produce dense, concentrated fruit, the middle slopes deliver power, and the lower sections contribute elegance — all of which are blended for layered complexity.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Red cherry and black plum emerge first, followed by baking spices and hints of cedar. Deeper notes of chocolate, pipe tobacco, and toasty oak develop with time in the glass.

Taste: The entry is bright with red plum and cranberry before the mid-palate fills out with cassis, blackberry, and ripe cherry. Dusty, well-integrated tannins provide a firm but polished structure, balanced by soft acidity and cola-like nuances.

Finish: Dry and moderately long, with lingering spice and redcurrant. A crunchy tannic grip at the close gives the wine grip without harshness.

How to Drink SIMI Cabernet

This Alexander Valley Cabernet is well-suited to drinking now and shows its best at cellar temperature — a slight chill of around 60–65°F helps the fruit remain vivid. A few minutes of decanting opens up the cedar and spice layers. For cocktails and wine-based drinks: a Cabernet Sangria with stone fruit and citrus highlights the wine's berry core; a Kalimotxo (red wine and cola) plays off the cola and cherry notes already present; and a classic Bishop cocktail with orange juice and sugar lets the tannic backbone shine through.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does SIMI Cabernet taste like? SIMI Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon leads with ripe red cherry, cassis, and blackberry supported by cedar, baking spice, and toasty oak. Dusty tannins and a dry finish give it structure without heaviness.

How does SIMI Cabernet compare to Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon? Both are Alexander Valley Cabernets, but Jordan is positioned as a higher-priced, Bordeaux-influenced expression known for extended aging potential and silk-like tannins. SIMI delivers a fruit-forward, more immediately approachable style at a lower price tier, making it a strong everyday alternative from the same appellation.

Is SIMI Cabernet good for sipping neat? Yes — its soft tannins, balanced acidity, and layered fruit make it approachable on its own without food, though a slight decant helps open the aromatics.

Where is SIMI Cabernet made? SIMI Cabernet is produced at SIMI Winery in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, California, with fruit sourced from Alexander Valley vineyards including the volcanic Landslide Vineyard on the slopes of Mount St. Helena.

What foods pair well with SIMI Cabernet? Grilled ribeye steak is a natural match, as the dusty tannins cut through the fat. Braised short ribs complement the wine's dark fruit and spice. Aged cheddar or Gruyère echo the oak and cedar tones. Roasted lamb with rosemary pairs well with the herbal undertones. Dark chocolate desserts work alongside the wine's cocoa-like finish.

What sizes does SIMI Cabernet come in? SIMI Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle.

Is SIMI Cabernet worth the price? SIMI positions as an entry-level to mid-range Alexander Valley Cabernet, delivering appellation-specific character — volcanic soil complexity, polished tannins, layered fruit — at a price well below many Sonoma County single-vineyard bottlings.

Why SIMI Cabernet?

The Landslide Vineyard sourcing is the clearest differentiator here: five volcanic soil types in a single site give this wine a complexity that punches above its price tier. With over 145 years of winemaking history behind it, SIMI is among the longest-running producers in Sonoma County, and the Alexander Valley Cabernet remains the flagship expression of that heritage. CellarTracker community scores across multiple vintages consistently land in the 86–88 point range, reflecting reliable quality year over year. For drinkers who want genuine Alexander Valley terroir without the premium price of single-vineyard or reserve-tier bottles, this remains one of the appellation's most accessible entry points.
