Description

Shock Top Variety 12-Pack is a mixed collection of Belgian-style wheat beers at 5.2% ABV, featuring multiple unfiltered expressions from the Shock Top brand in twelve 12-oz servings. The flagship Belgian White earned a Gold Medal at the 2006 North American Beer Awards, and the brand has built a loyal following for its distinctive triple-citrus-peel brewing approach.

Quick Facts: ABV: 5.2%  |  Origin: Fort Collins, Colorado  |  Style: Belgian-Style Witbier  |  Owner: Tilray Brands

Production & Heritage

Shock Top was originally developed by Anheuser-Busch and has been primarily brewed at the Fort Collins, Colorado facility. In August 2023, the brand was sold to Tilray Brands. The beers are brewed with a base of wheat malt and two-row barley malt, hopped with imported Hallertau hops blended with Cascade and Willamette varieties. What distinguishes Shock Top from most competitors in the Belgian wit category is the use of three real citrus peels — orange, lemon, and lime — added during the brewing process, along with coriander spice for earthy, floral undertones. The beer is left unfiltered, giving it the characteristic cloudy, light golden appearance associated with traditional witbiers.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Citrus zest leads immediately, followed by coriander and a gentle floral quality. A soft wheat sweetness sits underneath, rounding out the nose without competing with the brighter top notes.

Taste: The entry is a burst of sweet, tangy orange that broadens into lemon and lime citrus on the mid-palate. A malty sweetness balances the acidity, while coriander and light pepper notes add depth. The body is medium with aggressive carbonation that keeps each sip lively.

Finish: Crisp and clean with a slightly sweet landing that trails into a subtle sour note and balanced bitterness. The citrus character lingers without heaviness, making it extremely sessionable.

How to Drink Shock Top

Shock Top is best served cold, around 40–45°F, in a tulip glass or standard pint to let the aromatics open up. A traditional orange wheel garnish highlights the citrus character already present in the beer.

  • Beer-a-Rita: The triple-citrus profile blends naturally with lime juice and a salted rim for a beer-based margarita variation.
  • Wheat Beer Shandy: Mix with fresh lemonade to amplify the lemon peel notes into a bright warm-weather drink.
  • Michelada: The citrus acidity and medium body pair well with tomato juice, hot sauce, and Worcestershire for a savory brunch serve.

Best For

  • Stocking a cooler for backyard barbecues or outdoor gatherings
  • Introducing craft-curious drinkers to Belgian-style wheat beer
  • Sampling multiple Shock Top expressions without committing to a single style
  • Casual weeknight drinking when you want variety without complexity

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Shock Top taste like? Shock Top delivers a sweet, tangy orange-forward citrus flavor backed by coriander spice and soft wheat malt sweetness. It finishes crisp and slightly sweet with balanced bitterness and a refreshing, easy-drinking character.

How does Shock Top compare to Blue Moon? Both are Belgian-style witbiers brewed with orange peel and coriander, and they compete directly for the same market segment. Shock Top differentiates itself by using three citrus peels — orange, lemon, and lime — rather than Blue Moon's single Valencia orange peel, resulting in a more layered citrus profile.

Is Shock Top good for beginners? Shock Top is an excellent entry point into Belgian-style wheat beers, with approachable sweetness, mild bitterness, and a familiar citrus flavor that appeals to drinkers transitioning from mainstream lagers.

Where is Shock Top made? Shock Top is primarily brewed at the Fort Collins, Colorado facility and originated under Anheuser-Busch before being acquired by Tilray Brands in August 2023.

What foods pair well with Shock Top? Grilled chicken or shrimp tacos complement the citrus notes directly. Light salads with vinaigrette mirror the beer's acidity. Fish and chips benefit from the carbonation cutting through fried richness. Fresh fruit like melon or strawberries echo the fruity sweetness. Soft cheeses like goat cheese or burrata match the creamy wheat body.

What sizes does Shock Top come in? This variety pack contains twelve 12-oz bottles, which is the standard format for the mixed pack offering.

Is Shock Top worth the price? Shock Top positions as an accessible, everyday Belgian-style wheat beer that sits between mass-market lagers and craft brewery pricing — strong value for drinkers who want more flavor than a standard domestic beer without a premium craft price tag.

Why Shock Top?

The triple-citrus-peel technique — real orange, lemon, and lime peels added during brewing — gives Shock Top a more complex citrus dimension than most competing witbiers that rely on a single peel. The Gold Medal at the 2006 North American Beer Awards validated the Belgian White recipe early in the brand's history. A variety pack format lets drinkers explore multiple expressions of that citrus-and-wheat foundation in a single purchase. At 5.2% ABV and with an unfiltered, medium-bodied profile, these are beers built for volume drinking across a long afternoon without palate fatigue.
