Quick Facts: ABV: 13.9%  |  Origin: Clarksburg, Central Valley, California  |  Varietal: 100% Merlot  |  Producer: LangeTwins Family Winery and Vineyards

Production & Heritage

Sand Point is produced by LangeTwins Family Winery and Vineyards, a fifth-generation farming family rooted in the Lodi and Clarksburg appellations of California's Central Valley. The label itself was born from an environmental restoration project on a seven-acre parcel along the Mokelumne River — a detail that speaks to the family's land-first philosophy. The Merlot fruit comes from sustainably certified vineyards west of Sand Point in the Clarksburg Appellation, certified under both the Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing (since 2006) and the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA). After harvest, the wine is aged in French and American oak for approximately nine to twelve months, depending on vintage, building structure without overwhelming the fruit.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with ripe raspberry and black cherry, gradually revealing sweet cedar and a dried herb quality reminiscent of thyme and sage. A subtle mintiness provides lift behind the darker fruit tones.

Taste: On entry, bright red cherry and raspberry flavors dominate, giving way to a mid-palate layered with dark berry, cocoa powder, and a touch of dark chocolate. The oak influence stays measured, adding vanilla and spice without burying the fruit.

Finish: Medium in length with soft tannins and lingering notes of black cherry and cedar. The finish stays clean and balanced, leaving a pleasant berry-spice echo.

How to Drink Sand Point Merlot

This Merlot drinks well at a slight chill — around 60–65°F — and benefits from 15 to 20 minutes of breathing after opening. It works equally well poured straight into a glass as it does in wine-forward cocktails. A Kalimotxo (red wine and cola over ice) plays off the dark fruit and cocoa notes for a casual summer drink. A Red Wine Sangria built with fresh berries and a splash of brandy amplifies the raspberry character. A Mulled Wine preparation during colder months draws out the spice and cedar undertones nicely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Sand Point Merlot taste like? Sand Point Merlot leads with ripe raspberry and black cherry, layered with cocoa powder, dark chocolate, and a subtle cedar spice from oak aging. The tannins are soft, making it approachable and fruit-forward.

How does Sand Point Merlot compare to Bogle Merlot? Both are value-tier California Merlots, but Sand Point sources fruit specifically from the Clarksburg Appellation and carries certified sustainable credentials under both Lodi Rules and CSWA. Bogle draws from a broader Central Valley footprint, and where Bogle tends toward a rounder, plummier profile, Sand Point leans into brighter cherry and herbal complexity.

Is Sand Point Merlot good for sipping on its own? Yes — the balanced tannin structure and clean fruit make it a comfortable standalone pour, especially with a few minutes of air after opening.

Where is Sand Point Merlot made? Sand Point Merlot is produced by LangeTwins Family Winery and Vineyards in the Clarksburg Appellation of California's Central Valley. The vineyard sits west of Sand Point along the Mokelumne River corridor.

What foods pair well with Sand Point Merlot? Grilled lamb chops complement the dark fruit and herbal notes. Mushroom risotto mirrors the earthy cocoa undertones. Roasted beet salad with goat cheese plays against the bright cherry acidity. Aged cheddar draws out the vanilla and cedar from oak aging. Slow-braised short ribs match the wine's medium body and soft tannins.

What sizes does Sand Point Merlot come in? Sand Point Merlot is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle.

Is Sand Point Merlot worth the price? Sand Point positions firmly in the entry-level value tier of California Merlot, yet its 88-point Wine Enthusiast rating and sustainable certifications suggest quality that outpaces many wines at the same level. It delivers legitimate appellation character and oak complexity at a price point that invites everyday drinking.

Why Sand Point Merlot?

What separates Sand Point from the crowd of budget California Merlots is its verifiable pedigree — fruit sourced from a single appellation, grown under two rigorous sustainability certifications, and produced by a family with five generations of farming experience in the region. Repeat 88-point scores from Wine Enthusiast confirm this isn't a one-vintage anomaly. The wine's origin story, tied to an environmental restoration project on the Mokelumne River, gives it a narrative that runs deeper than the bottle. For drinkers who want Clarksburg terroir and responsible agriculture without paying a premium markup, this Merlot makes a compelling case.
