Description

Pere Magloire Fine Calvados 750ML is a Calvados apple brandy from Normandy, France, bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml bottle. Produced by the oldest and best-known Calvados house, it is the entry point in the Pere Magloire range, aged a minimum of two years in oak and built around fresh apple character rather than heavy wood.

Quick Facts: ABV: 40% | Origin: Pays d'Auge, Normandy, France | Style: Calvados AOC, Fine (minimum 2 years in oak) | Producer: Pere Magloire

Production & Heritage

Pere Magloire traces its roots to 1821 and is based in Pont-l'Eveque in the Pays d'Auge, the heartland of Calvados production in Normandy. It is the largest Calvados producer in the world and the brand most responsible for introducing the spirit to international drinkers. Calvados begins as cider: dozens of varieties of bitter, bittersweet and sharp cider apples are pressed and fermented, then distilled and aged in French oak. The Fine designation (also labeled VS) requires at least two years in cask, and Pere Magloire blends it to keep the orchard fruit bright and forward, with just enough oak to add warmth and a golden color. Where older expressions lean toward baked apple, dried fruit and spice, the Fine is the fresh, lively expression of the house, and the one most often used in Norman kitchens and cafes.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Crisp green apple and apple skin lead, followed by pear, a touch of fresh-cut hay and light vanilla from the oak.

Taste: Lively and fruit-driven, with fresh apple, soft pear and a hint of honey. The oak adds roundness and a gentle warmth without obscuring the orchard character.

Finish: Medium length, clean and slightly dry, with apple peel and a whisper of spice. It finishes fresh rather than heavy.

How to Drink Pere Magloire Fine

Pere Magloire Fine is the Calvados to use freely. Normans drink it as a trou normand between courses, or in coffee after a meal, and it is excellent chilled or over a single large ice cube. In cocktails it shines: stir a Calvados Old Fashioned with maple syrup and aromatic bitters, shake a Jack Rose with lemon and grenadine, or lengthen it with ginger beer and lime for a Normandy Mule. A splash in hot apple cider in winter is hard to beat.

Best For

  • Cocktail bars and home bartenders who want an authentic apple brandy base
  • Cooking and flambeing, from crepes to pork and cream sauces
  • An introduction to Calvados before stepping up to VSOP and XO
  • Fall gatherings, hot cider and after-dinner coffee

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Pere Magloire Fine taste like? It tastes of fresh apple and pear with light honey and vanilla, soft oak warmth and a clean, slightly dry finish. It is the brightest and most fruit-forward expression in the Pere Magloire range.

How does Pere Magloire Fine compare to Pere Magloire VSOP? The VSOP is aged at least four years and shows more baked apple, dried fruit, toffee and spice from the extra cask time. The Fine is younger, fresher and more cider-like, which makes it the better choice for mixing.

Is Pere Magloire Fine good for cocktails? Yes. Its fresh apple character and 40% strength make it ideal for the Jack Rose, Calvados Old Fashioned, apple mules and hot cider, and it is priced to be used generously.

Where is Pere Magloire Fine made? It is produced in Pont-l'Eveque in the Pays d'Auge region of Normandy, France, from locally grown cider apples under the Calvados AOC.

What foods pair well with Pere Magloire Fine? Camembert and Pont-l'Eveque cheese, roast pork with apples, crepes, apple tart, pate and charcuterie all pair naturally. In Normandy it is also sipped between courses to refresh the palate.

What sizes does Pere Magloire Fine come in? Pere Magloire Fine is sold in the 750ml bottle in the United States.

Is Pere Magloire Fine worth the price? It is one of the most affordable genuine AOC Calvados available and delivers real orchard character, which makes it a strong value for cocktails and cooking as well as casual sipping.

Why Pere Magloire Fine?

Pere Magloire Fine is the everyday face of the world's best-known Calvados house, and it succeeds because it keeps the apple at the center. Two years in oak add just enough warmth and color to round the spirit without hiding the fresh cider fruit that makes Calvados distinct from grape brandy. It mixes beautifully, cooks beautifully and sips easily over ice, all at a price that encourages experimentation. For anyone curious about French apple brandy, it is the natural first bottle, and for bartenders it is a dependable workhorse.
