Quick Facts: ABV: 13.5%  |  Origin: Riverland, South Australia  |  Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon  |  Winery: Oxford Landing Estates

Production & Heritage

Oxford Landing Estates sits on the banks of the Murray River near Waikerie in South Australia's Riverland district. The estate's vineyards are divided into 150 individual two-hectare blocks, each managed as its own ecosystem — an unusual level of precision for a value-tier wine. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks using a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions over approximately six days, followed by malolactic fermentation. All Oxford Landing wines have been certified vegan since 2008.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with ripe blackberry and blackcurrant, quickly followed by dark plum and red jubes. Beneath the fruit sit quieter notes of tobacco leaf, cedar, and violets that add dimension without dominating.

Taste: The entry is fruit-forward and juicy, with blackcurrant and blackberry leading the charge. At mid-palate, a silky texture emerges alongside red cherry, subtle mocha, and layers of warm spice. Briar-like undertones provide a savory counterpoint to the fruit sweetness.

Finish: Medium in length with soft, grainy tannins that dry gently without astringency. Lingering notes of dark berry and faint cedar round out the close.

How to Drink Oxford Landing Cab

This Cabernet drinks well at cool room temperature — around 16–18°C — and benefits from a few minutes of breathing time after opening. Its approachable tannin structure and fruit intensity also make it a reliable cocktail wine.

  • Kalimotxo: The bold berry fruit and soft tannins hold up against cola's sweetness for a refreshing, low-effort drink.
  • Cabernet Sangria: Dark plum and blackcurrant notes amplify sliced stone fruits and citrus in a classic red sangria.
  • New York Sour: The wine's berry depth and mild acidity add color and complexity as a float on a whiskey sour.

Best For

  • Everyday weeknight dinners where you want varietal character without overspending
  • Bringing a reliable bottle to a casual barbecue or potluck
  • Stocking a home bar with a versatile red for cooking and sipping
  • Introducing new wine drinkers to Cabernet Sauvignon's core profile

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Oxford Landing Cab taste like? It delivers ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum fruit with undercurrents of mocha, spice, and cedar, finished by soft grainy tannins. Wine Enthusiast described the 2016 vintage as an "ultra-affordable, fruity full-bodied Cabernet" with dark berry and earthy, savory notes.

How does Oxford Landing Cab compare to Jacob's Creek Cabernet Sauvignon? Both are widely available, value-priced South Australian Cabernets, but Oxford Landing draws fruit exclusively from its single Riverland estate divided into 150 micro-blocks. Jacob's Creek sources across a broader range of South Australian sub-regions, which can yield a different fruit profile.

Is Oxford Landing Cab good for beginners? Its fruit-forward character, silky texture, and gentle tannins make it an accessible entry point into Cabernet Sauvignon without the intensity or oak weight that can overwhelm newer palates.

Where is Oxford Landing Cab made? It is produced by Oxford Landing Estates, located on Oxford Landing Road in Waikerie, within South Australia's Riverland region on the banks of the Murray River.

What foods pair well with Oxford Landing Cab? Grilled lamb chops complement the wine's spice and berry fruit. Beef burgers with cheddar mirror its full-bodied character. Eggplant parmigiana provides a savory, umami-rich match. Hard cheeses like aged cheddar or manchego echo the subtle mocha and cedar notes. Tomato-based pasta sauces work well with the wine's ripe acidity.

What sizes does Oxford Landing Cab come in? It is most commonly available in the standard 750ml bottle format.

Is Oxford Landing Cab worth the price? Oxford Landing positions firmly in the entry-level value tier, and for its price point it delivers genuine varietal Cabernet Sauvignon character — blackcurrant, structured tannins, and spice — rather than generic red-blend fruitiness, which distinguishes it from many competitors at the same level.

Why Oxford Landing Cab?

The vineyard's history as one of South Australia's earliest single-site Cabernet Sauvignon plantings gives it a provenance that most value-tier reds cannot claim. Managing 150 individual two-hectare blocks as separate ecosystems allows the winemaking team to fine-tune ripeness and quality at a scale typically reserved for higher-priced labels. Multiple Commended awards at the International Wine Challenge confirm the wine's consistency across vintages. For drinkers seeking honest, fruit-driven Cabernet Sauvignon with genuine regional identity, Oxford Landing remains one of the Riverland's most dependable options.
