Quick Facts: ABV: 14.0%  |  Origin: Casablanca Valley, Chile  |  Varietal: 100% Chardonnay  |  Producer: Montes Wines

Production & Heritage

Montes Wines was founded in 1988 by four Chilean wine industry veterans — Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre, and Pedro Grand — with the goal of producing world-class wines that could compete internationally. The Alpha Chardonnay is sourced from vineyards in the cool-climate Casablanca Valley, planted with two specific clones: Dijon 76, which contributes tropical fruit and citrus character, and Clone 95, known for producing exceptionally concentrated grapes with added depth. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures of 13–14°C over approximately 25 days, with malolactic conversion permitted to build body and texture. Oak aging introduces layers of toast, vanilla, and butter to the finished wine.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with an intense, complex wave of tropical fruit — pineapple, ripe mango, and banana — before giving way to softer stone fruit aromas of peach and apricot. Underneath, toasty oak and subtle vanilla add a warm, inviting dimension.

Taste: The palate entry is smooth and generous, with ripe golden berries and grapefruit citrus meeting buttery toffee notes from oak maturation. Mid-palate weight is substantial without being heavy, and well-calibrated acidity keeps everything fresh and focused. The balance between fruit richness and bright acidity is the wine's defining quality on the palate.

Finish: Long and elegant, with lingering tropical fruit and a thread of lemon zest that sustains freshness. Faint toasty notes persist alongside a creamy texture that fades gradually.

How to Drink Montes Alpha Chardonnay

Serve lightly chilled to around 10–12°C to let the aromatics fully express themselves without muting the fruit. This Chardonnay drinks beautifully on its own but also has the structure and weight to stand up in food pairings and cocktails.

  • White Wine Spritz: The tropical fruit intensity and oak backbone hold their character when lengthened with sparkling water and a citrus twist.
  • Chardonnay Sangria: Mango, peach, and pineapple additions echo the wine's natural fruit profile, creating a cohesive and refreshing punch.
  • Kir: A small measure of crème de cassis plays against the wine's rich body and acidity, resulting in an aperitif with real depth.

Best For

  • Bringing as a host gift that signals quality without excess
  • Exploring cool-climate Chilean white wines beyond Sauvignon Blanc

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Montes Alpha Chardonnay taste like? It delivers a generous core of tropical fruit — mango, pineapple, and golden berries — layered with toasty oak, vanilla, and butter. Bright acidity keeps the rich fruit in check, leading to a long, elegant finish.

How does Montes Alpha Chardonnay compare to Californian Chardonnay? Montes co-founder Aurelio Montes has acknowledged a stylistic kinship between this wine and Californian Chardonnays, particularly in terms of oak influence and ripe fruit character. However, the Casablanca Valley's cool maritime climate tends to deliver sharper natural acidity and a leaner overall structure than many Napa or Sonoma counterparts.

Is Montes Alpha Chardonnay good for sipping on its own? Yes — the balance between tropical richness, oak complexity, and fresh acidity makes it an engaging wine to drink neat, ideally served lightly chilled to bring out its full aromatic range.

Where is Montes Alpha Chardonnay made? It is produced by Montes Wines, a Chilean winery founded in 1988, from Chardonnay grapes grown in the Casablanca Valley — a cool-climate coastal region northwest of Santiago known for producing Chile's finest white wines.

What foods pair well with Montes Alpha Chardonnay? Roasted chicken with a herb butter sauce complements the wine's creamy oak character. Grilled white fish such as sea bass mirrors its clean acidity. Lobster or crab in a citrus preparation echoes its tropical fruit notes. Aged Gruyère or Comté cheese pairs naturally with the toasty, buttery tones. A Thai green curry with coconut milk bridges the wine's richness and fruit intensity.

What sizes does Montes Alpha Chardonnay come in? The standard release is widely available in a 750ml bottle.

Is Montes Alpha Chardonnay worth the price? It positions as a premium-tier Chilean Chardonnay that consistently outperforms its price category in critical reviews, with multiple vintages scoring 90+ points from respected publications — strong value relative to similarly rated wines from California or Burgundy.

Why Montes Alpha Chardonnay?

The Alpha Chardonnay was instrumental in reshaping international perceptions of Chilean white wine when it debuted, and its 1998 vintage was named World Champion Chardonnay by Slow Food of Italy — a milestone for the entire Chilean wine industry. The deliberate use of Dijon 76 and Clone 95 in Casablanca Valley vineyards gives this wine a specificity of character that many New World Chardonnays lack. With recent vintages continuing to earn scores of 91–92 points from James Suckling and Vinous, alongside a Double Gold at the 2022 Sakura Awards, Montes Alpha Chardonnay remains one of the most reliable and rewarding Chardonnays produced in South America.
