Description

Legent Bourbon 750ML is a 94-proof (47% ABV) Kentucky bourbon born from an unprecedented collaboration between American and Japanese whisky masters. It earned a Grand Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and 93 points at the 2021 London Spirits Competition — the highest score awarded to any U.S. entry that year.

Quick Facts: ABV: 47% (94 proof)  |  Origin: Kentucky, USA  |  Style: Blended Straight Bourbon with Wine & Sherry Cask Finishing  |  Distillery: Jim Beam (Beam Suntory)

Production & Heritage

Legent represents the convergence of two distinct whisky-making traditions. Jim Beam master distiller Fred Noe — seventh-generation Beam family distiller — produced a core bourbon from a mashbill of approximately 76–77% corn, 12–13% rye, and 10% malted barley, matured for roughly five years in new charred American oak. Suntory chief blender Shinji Fukuyo, the architect behind celebrated Japanese whiskies like Hibiki, then directed the finishing and blending process. He selected individual parcels for additional maturation in California red wine casks (approximately one extra year) and sherry casks (approximately two extra years), ultimately blending all three components — the straight bourbon, the wine-finished, and the sherry-finished — into a single expression that reflects both Kentucky tradition and Japanese blending philosophy.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Toasted almonds and brown sugar rise first, followed by waves of dried fruit, macaroon sweetness, and baking spice. A subtle layer of fresh biscuit and green apple adds brightness beneath the richer notes.

Taste: The entry is smooth and rounded, with caramel and vanilla immediately asserting themselves before giving way to dark red fruit and stone fruit at mid-palate. Oak structure and a thread of chocolate build toward the peak, balanced by citrus acidity and roasted peanut richness that prevent any single element from dominating.

Finish: Medium-long and warmly spiced, with leather, dried fruit, and lingering oak tannins. A faint echo of strawberry sweetness and vanilla stays well after the sip.

How to Drink Legent

Neat or with a single ice cube is the best way to appreciate the layered blending work — the wine and sherry cask influence reveals itself gradually as the bourbon opens up. A few drops of water coax out additional fruit and floral nuances without diminishing proof character.

In cocktails, Legent brings complexity that elevates classic templates:

  • Manhattan: The sherry cask influence pairs naturally with sweet vermouth, reinforcing dried fruit and spice without competing.
  • Old Fashioned: The inherent sweetness and fruit character allow you to pull back on sugar, letting the bourbon's complexity drive the drink.
  • Boulevardier: Wine cask-finished bourbon stands up to Campari's bitterness while adding dark fruit depth that a standard bourbon may lack.

Best For

  • Bourbon drinkers looking to explore Japanese blending techniques without leaving the bourbon category
  • Gifting someone who already owns the usual Kentucky staples and wants something genuinely different
  • Side-by-side tastings comparing American and Japanese whisky philosophies
  • After-dinner sipping alongside dessert courses featuring chocolate, dried fruit, or nuts

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Legent taste like? Legent delivers a rich, layered profile of caramel, vanilla, and dark dried fruit, accented by baking spice, oak, and subtle chocolate notes. The wine and sherry cask finishing gives it a fruit-forward depth uncommon in most Kentucky bourbons.

How does Legent compare to Basil Hayden? Both are approachable, higher-rye Kentucky bourbons at accessible price points, but Legent's wine and sherry cask finishing adds noticeable dried fruit and tannic complexity that Basil Hayden's lighter, spice-driven profile does not share. Basil Hayden is bottled at 80 proof versus Legent's 94 proof, making Legent the bolder option.

Is Legent good for sipping neat? Absolutely — the multi-cask blending process was designed specifically to create a bourbon meant for contemplative sipping, and the 94-proof bottling strength delivers full flavor without excessive heat.

Where is Legent made? Legent is produced at the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont, Kentucky. The bourbon is distilled and aged there, with finishing and final blending directed by Suntory chief blender Shinji Fukuyo in collaboration with Beam master distiller Fred Noe.

What foods pair well with Legent? Dark chocolate truffles complement the bourbon's cocoa and dried fruit notes. Aged Manchego or Gruyère echoes its nutty, caramel qualities. Charcuterie with fig jam mirrors the wine cask influence. Pecan pie amplifies the toasted nut and brown sugar character. Grilled stone fruit desserts harmonize with the sherry-finished parcels.

What sizes does Legent come in? Legent Bourbon is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle size.

Is Legent worth the price? Legent positions as a mid-premium bourbon, and the dual cask-finishing process plus the involvement of a world-renowned Japanese blender deliver genuine complexity that justifies its place above entry-level offerings in the category.

Why Legent?

No other bourbon on the market results from a direct collaboration between a seventh-generation Kentucky master distiller and a Suntory chief blender responsible for some of Japan's most decorated whiskies. The triple-component blending approach — straight bourbon, wine cask-finished, and sherry cask-finished — creates a flavor architecture that cannot be replicated by simple barrel finishing alone. Critical recognition backs up the concept: a Grand Gold from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, a Double Gold from the TAG Global Spirits Awards, and the top U.S. score at the 2021 London Spirits Competition confirm that Legent is far more than a marketing exercise. It is a genuinely distinctive bourbon that rewards anyone willing to rethink what the category can be.
