Description
Lagavulin 8 Year 750ML is an Islay single malt Scotch whisky aged eight years and bottled at 48% ABV (96 proof) in a 750ml bottle. First released in 2016 to mark the distillery's 200th anniversary, it was inspired by an 1886 visit from whisky writer Alfred Barnard, who tasted an 8-year-old Lagavulin and called it "exceptionally fine."
Quick Facts: ABV: 48% (96 proof) | Origin: Islay, Scotland | Age: 8 Years, Single Malt Scotch | Distillery: Lagavulin (Diageo)
Production & Heritage
Lagavulin was founded in 1816 on the south coast of Islay, between Laphroaig and Ardbeg, and it remains one of the most recognizable peated whiskies in the world. The distillery uses heavily peated malt from Port Ellen maltings, unusually slow distillation in pear-shaped stills, and maturation in refill casks that let the smoke and maritime character stay front and center. The 8 Year Old was created for the bicentenary in 2016 as a nod to Alfred Barnard, whose Victorian survey of British distilleries recorded an 8-year-old Lagavulin as exceptionally fine. Diageo kept it in the permanent range because it filled a gap: a younger, higher-strength Lagavulin with more raw peat and less cask influence than the classic 16 Year Old, bottled at 48% to preserve texture and intensity.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Bonfire smoke, iodine and sea spray lead, followed by lemon zest, green apple and a sweet, malty cereal note. A faint medicinal edge and wet stone minerality sit beneath the peat.
Taste: Bright and punchy, with peat smoke wrapped around citrus, vanilla and light honey. The 48% strength gives it grip and an oily texture, while black pepper and a touch of brine build toward the mid-palate.
Finish: Long, dry and smoky, with ash, salted lemon and a lingering sweet malt note. The peat fades slowly, leaving a clean, mineral tang.
How to Drink Lagavulin 8 Year
Lagavulin 8 Year is best neat or with a small splash of water, which softens the alcohol and brings out the citrus under the smoke. Serve it in a tulip glass at room temperature. Its intensity also makes it a strong cocktail whisky: try a Penicillin with honey-ginger syrup and lemon, a Smoky Rob Roy with sweet vermouth and orange bitters, or use a quarter ounce as a rinse in a Smoked Old Fashioned built on bourbon.
Best For
- Peat lovers who want a younger, more vivid Lagavulin than the 16 Year
- Cocktail bars and home mixologists who need a bold smoky base
- Gifting a Scotch drinker on a budget below the premium age statements
- Cold-weather sipping by the fire or after a seafood dinner
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Lagavulin 8 Year taste like? Lagavulin 8 Year is intensely smoky and maritime, with bonfire peat, iodine, lemon zest, green apple and sweet malt, finishing long, dry and ashy. It is brighter and more direct than the 16 Year Old.
How does Lagavulin 8 Year compare to Lagavulin 16 Year? The 16 Year is rounder, sweeter and more sherried, with the peat integrated into dried fruit and oak. The 8 Year is leaner, more citrusy and more overtly smoky, bottled at 48% rather than 43%, with less cask influence and more distillery character.
Is Lagavulin 8 Year good for cocktails? Yes. Its 48% strength and assertive peat stand up to citrus, honey and vermouth, which makes it one of the best Islay malts for a Penicillin, a smoky Rob Roy or a Scotch-based sour.
Where is Lagavulin 8 Year made? It is distilled and matured at the Lagavulin distillery on the south coast of Islay, Scotland, founded in 1816 and now owned by Diageo.
What foods pair well with Lagavulin 8 Year? Oysters and smoked salmon are classic Islay pairings. It also works with blue cheese, grilled lamb, dark chocolate and anything cooked over charcoal, where the smoke in the glass matches the smoke on the plate.
What sizes does Lagavulin 8 Year come in? In the United States, Lagavulin 8 Year is sold in the standard 750ml bottle.
Is Lagavulin 8 Year worth the price? It is one of the best-value bottles in the Lagavulin range: a higher-strength Islay malt from a famous distillery at a price well below the 16 Year and the Distillers Edition.
Why Lagavulin 8 Year?
Lagavulin 8 Year started as a bicentenary tribute and stayed because it does something the rest of the range does not: it shows the distillery spirit young, loud and at 48%, with the peat and sea air unsoftened by decades in wood. That makes it both a great introduction to Islay for newcomers who want the full smoky experience and a favorite of long-time fans who like their Lagavulin with more edge. At its price, it is one of the easiest recommendations in peated Scotch.
