Description
KWV XO 750ML is a South African potstill brandy aged at least 20 years in French oak, bottled at 38% ABV. Winner of a Double Gold Medal at the 2025 International Spirits Challenge, this expression helped KWV earn the title of Best Brandy & Cognac Producer in the world — the first time in ISC history that a brandy house, rather than a cognac house, claimed the honor.
Quick Facts: ABV: 38% | Origin: Worcester, Western Cape, South Africa | Age: Minimum 20 Years | Distillery: KWV Worcester Distillery
Production & Heritage
KWV operates the largest copper potstill distillery in the world, housing 120 copper potstills of 1,000 litres each under one roof, alongside a French Cognac Charentais Prulho potstill of 2,500 litres. The XO is double distilled in French copper pot stills, then matured for a minimum of 20 years in French oak barrels and blended with even older brandies to achieve its depth and complexity. South African brandy benefits from grapes grown specifically for distillation — a practice uncommon in most brandy-producing countries — giving KWV's spirit a distinctive fruit-forward character from the vineyard up.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: The nose opens with lychee and cinnamon, evolving into rich fruit cake and coconut. Deeper layers reveal dark chocolate, vanilla, and soft floral accents.
Taste: On entry, dark chocolate and coffee dominate, giving way to warm baking spice at mid-palate. The brandy is notably well-balanced, soft, and easy to appreciate without sacrificing complexity.
Finish: Long, velvety, and lingering, the finish stays on the palate well after the last sip. Traces of spice and cocoa gently fade, leaving a rich, warming impression.
How to Drink KWV XO
This brandy rewards neat sipping in a tulip-shaped snifter at room temperature, where its two decades of oak influence and layered aromatics fully unfold. A single ice cube can soften the spice and amplify the chocolate and fruit notes for warmer-weather drinking.
In cocktails, the XO's richness makes it a compelling substitute for cognac: try it in a Sidecar, where its dark chocolate depth pairs beautifully with citrus and orange liqueur; in a Brandy Alexander, where its vanilla and cocoa notes harmonize naturally with cream; or in a Vieux Carré, where its spice and oak character stand up to sweet vermouth and bitters.

How does KWV XO compare to French XO Cognac? KWV XO is a South African potstill brandy rather than a French cognac, but both categories share double distillation in copper pot stills and extended oak aging. At 20-plus years of maturation and armed with a 2025 ISC Double Gold — earned in a competition where KWV was named Best Brandy & Cognac Producer over established French cognac houses — it competes directly with premium XO cognacs in complexity and depth.
Is KWV XO good for sipping neat? KWV XO is ideally suited to neat sipping, with its 38% ABV providing a smooth, approachable intensity and its two decades of oak aging delivering layered flavors that develop in the glass.
Where is KWV XO made? KWV XO is produced at the KWV Worcester Distillery in Worcester, Western Cape, South Africa. The facility is the world's largest copper potstill distillery, operating 120 copper potstills under a single roof.
What foods pair well with KWV XO? Dark chocolate truffles echo the brandy's cocoa notes; aged hard cheeses like Gruyère complement its nutty oak character; crème brûlée mirrors its vanilla and caramel undertones; dried fruit and nut boards highlight its fruit cake aromatics; and grilled stone fruit with cinnamon amplifies its warm spice profile.
What sizes does KWV XO come in? The standard widely available format is the 750ml bottle.
Is KWV XO worth the price? KWV XO positions as a premium aged brandy that delivers complexity and oak maturity on par with spirits costing significantly more, particularly French XO cognacs. Its 20-year minimum aging, ISC Double Gold recognition, and distinctive South African provenance represent strong value in the ultra-premium brandy tier.
Why KWV XO?
Few brandies outside of France have earned the kind of international recognition KWV XO commands. Its Double Gold at the 2025 International Spirits Challenge — where judges praised it as "balanced and spicy to the end…rich, dark, and welcoming" — helped KWV become the first brandy producer in ISC history to be crowned Best Brandy & Cognac Producer in the world. Backed by a minimum of 20 years in French oak and distilled in the world's largest copper potstill facility, this is a brandy with genuine substance behind every accolade. For anyone exploring what South African brandy is capable of at its peak, KWV XO is the benchmark.
