Quick Facts: ABV: 45% (all three) | Origin: Three Oaks, Michigan | Style: Rye, Bourbon & Four Grain Whiskey | Distillery: Journeyman Distillery
Production & Heritage
Founded in 2010 by Bill Welter inside the historic Featherbone Factory in Three Oaks, Michigan, Journeyman Distillery operates as a grain-to-bottle facility using locally sourced organic grains and water drawn from an underground aquifer. Distillation takes place in a 5,000-liter copper pot still imported from Germany. Each whiskey in this pack carries a distinct organic mashbill: Last Feather Rye uses 60% rye and 40% wheat; Featherbone Bourbon runs 70% corn, 25% wheat, and 5% rye; and Silver Cross Four Grain divides equally among rye, wheat, corn, and barley at 25% each. All three are bottled at 90 proof without chill filtration.
Tasting Notes
Last Feather Rye —
Aroma: Ripe banana leads, followed by soft mint and gentle grain sweetness. The wheat component tempers the typical rye sharpness on the nose.
Taste: Peppery rye spice enters first, then gives way to fruit and a gentle sweetness from the unusually high wheat content. The mid-palate is well-balanced and approachable.
Finish: Clean and dry with lingering mint and a trace of white pepper. Medium in length with no harsh edges.
Featherbone Bourbon —
Aroma: Earthy and assertive, with cereal grain, peanut butter, and a thread of caramel. There is a youthful, spiritous energy to the nose.
Taste: Bold entry with nutty, sweet caramel tones at the mid-palate. Vegetal and earthy notes emerge alongside warming spice as it develops.
Finish: Warming and moderately long, with lingering sweetness and a slightly earthy close. The wheat-heavy grain bill keeps the texture soft.
Silver Cross Four Grain —
Aroma: Chocolate caramels, butterscotch, and a malty biscuit quality. Hints of cocoa and cola build complexity.
Taste: Rich and layered — cocoa and spice dominate the entry, followed by fruit and a honeyed butterscotch sweetness through the mid-palate. This is the most complex of the three.
Finish: Long and satisfying, with wood, light smoke, and lingering chocolate. Malt and biscuit notes persist well after the sip.
How to Drink Journeyman Variety 3Pk
The sampler format invites side-by-side tasting, ideally neat or with a few drops of water to open the organic grain character of each expression. Beyond neat sipping, each whiskey holds its own in cocktails:
- Last Feather Rye in a Manhattan: The wheat-softened rye spice and dry finish pair naturally with sweet vermouth without overwhelming the drink.
- Featherbone Bourbon in an Old Fashioned: Its bold, earthy-sweet profile stands up to bitters and a sugar cube without losing character.
- Silver Cross Four Grain in a Whiskey Sour: The chocolate and butterscotch richness adds body and complexity against fresh citrus.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Journeyman Variety 3Pk taste like? The set spans a wide flavor range: the rye is peppery and dry with fruit notes, the bourbon is bold with caramel and earthy peanut butter tones, and the four grain is the richest — delivering chocolate, butterscotch, and baking spice.
How does the Journeyman Variety 3Pk compare to other whiskey sampler sets? Most multi-pack samplers come from large-scale producers using conventional grain; Journeyman's set is unusual in that all three expressions are certified organic and kosher, distilled grain-to-bottle in a single German copper pot still, giving the set a cohesive house character despite the differing mashbills.
Is the Journeyman Variety 3Pk good for beginners? Yes — the 200ml format lets newcomers explore rye, bourbon, and four-grain whiskey styles without committing to full bottles, and the 45% ABV is approachable enough for less experienced drinkers while still delivering full flavor.
Where is the Journeyman Variety 3Pk made? All three whiskeys are distilled and bottled at Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks, Michigan, a small town in the southwestern corner of the state where the distillery occupies the 19th-century Featherbone Factory building.
What foods pair well with the Journeyman Variety 3Pk? The rye pairs well with smoked salmon or charcuterie, where its pepper and mint complement cured meats. The bourbon works alongside pecan pie or barbecued pork, matching sweetness for sweetness. The four grain stands up to dark chocolate truffles or aged cheddar, where its cocoa and butterscotch notes find natural harmony.
What sizes does the Journeyman Variety 3Pk come in? The standard variety pack contains three 200ml bottles, one of each expression — Last Feather Rye, Featherbone Bourbon, and Silver Cross Four Grain.
Is the Journeyman Variety 3Pk worth the price? The set positions in the mid-range craft whiskey tier, and the value proposition is strong: three distinct, award-winning, certified organic expressions from a single distillery, packaged for exploration rather than commitment to a single full-sized bottle.
Why Journeyman Variety 3Pk?
What distinguishes this set is the rare combination of certified organic grain sourcing, kosher production, and genuine mashbill diversity from a single pot still. The Silver Cross Four Grain alone has collected Gold medals at both the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the 2022 ASCOT Awards, along with 92 points from the Beverage Tasting Institute and 96 points from The Whiskey Guild. Last Feather Rye is a two-time Gold Medal winner at the San Francisco Spirits Competition and stands out as one of very few wheat-heavy rye whiskeys on the American market — its 40% wheat content creates a softer rye profile that few competitors replicate. Taken together, the three bottles map the full spectrum of what organic Michigan grain can deliver through copper pot distillation.
