Quick Facts: ABV: 13.5%  |  Origin: Sierras de Málaga, Spain  |  Style: Dry White  |  Winery: Jorge Ordóñez & Co., Vélez-Málaga

Production & Heritage

Jorge Ordóñez & Co. is based in Vélez-Málaga, in a region once famed for its historic "Mountain Wines" before phylloxera and shifting tastes nearly erased the tradition. Botani revived that legacy by vinifying Muscat of Alexandria completely dry — a radical departure when the grape had been used almost exclusively for sweet wines in the region. The fruit is hand-harvested from vineyards planted on decomposed slate soils at inclines reaching up to 70°, among the steepest and most treacherous vineyard sites in Europe. Mules carry six 15-kilogram boxes at a time up the slopes. The wine is fermented dry in stainless steel tanks and aged on its lees for eight months, building texture without masking the grape's aromatic intensity.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with fragrant white flowers and rose petal before moving into orchard fruit, lychee, and orange preserve. Subtle yeasty and herbal undertones emerge from the extended lees contact.

Taste: Medium-bodied on entry with a subtly fruity impression of mandarin orange, white peach, and just-ripe apricot. The mid-palate turns decidedly dry and vinous, carried by vibrant acidity and a textured, almost saline quality. Blood orange and pink grapefruit granita notes add brightness as the wine develops in the glass.

Finish: Clean, mouthwatering, and persistent, with lingering lime and lychee trailing into a savory, mineral-driven close. The salinity and acidity leave a refreshing imprint well after the last sip.

How to Drink Botani

Serve well chilled — around 8–10°C (46–50°F) — to let the aromatics lift without muting the wine's textural complexity. Botani also works as an exceptional base in wine-forward cocktails: try it in a White Sangria, where its lychee and citrus aromatics amplify fresh fruit; in a Spritz with a splash of soda and a grapefruit twist for an aperitif with real depth; or in a Hugo variation, replacing the elderflower liqueur with a dash of mint to let the Moscatel's own floral character lead.

Best For

  • An aperitif course at a summer dinner party
  • Introducing wine drinkers to dry Moscatel for the first time
  • Pairing with Mediterranean or Southeast Asian cuisine
  • Gifting to someone who appreciates rare regional Spanish wines

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Botani taste like? Botani is a dry, aromatic white wine dominated by fresh citrus, lychee, white peach, and floral notes, with a textured mid-palate and a saline, mouthwatering finish.

How does Botani compare to Albariño from Rías Baixas? Both are aromatic, dry Spanish whites with pronounced acidity and a saline streak, but Botani's Muscat of Alexandria grape delivers more intense floral and tropical aromas — lychee, rose, orange blossom — where Albariño tends toward stone fruit and green apple with a more overtly maritime character.

Is Botani good for sipping on its own? Absolutely — the combination of aromatic intensity, dry palate, and bright acidity makes it ideal as a standalone aperitif or a contemplative glass on a warm evening.

Where is Botani made? Botani is produced by Jorge Ordóñez & Co. in Vélez-Málaga, within the D.O. Sierras de Málaga appellation in southern Spain's Andalucía region.

What foods pair well with Botani? Thai green papaya salad works beautifully, as the wine's lychee and citrus echo the dish's aromatics. Grilled prawns with garlic and lemon complement Botani's salinity. Fresh goat cheese or burrata highlight its creamy lees-aged texture. Pan-seared white fish with herb butter matches its weight and acidity. Marcona almonds make a simple but excellent pairing, underscoring the wine's subtle nutty undertone.

What sizes does Botani come in? Botani is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle.

Is Botani worth the price? Botani positions as a mid-range white wine that delivers well above its price tier, offering the aromatic complexity and site-specific character — extreme-slope viticulture, hand harvesting by mule — typically associated with more expensive bottlings.

Why Botani?

Botani holds a genuine claim to historical significance: it revived the tradition of dry Moscatel in a region where the grape had been relegated almost entirely to sweet wine production. The vineyard conditions — decomposed slate at slopes up to 70°, requiring mule transport — impose naturally low yields and concentrated fruit that no amount of cellar work can replicate. The 2023 vintage earned 93 points from Vinous Media, reinforcing the wine's consistency at a high level. For anyone seeking an aromatic dry white with real provenance and a story rooted in the landscape itself, Botani stands apart from the crowded field of international Muscat bottlings.
