Description

Highland Park 25 Year 750ML is a 45.7% ABV single malt Scotch whisky from Orkney, aged for a quarter century in a combination of sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks. In 2013, this expression became the first spirit ever to receive a perfect 100-point score at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge, also earning the Chairman's Trophy for Best of Category. That same year, F. Paul Pacult named it Best Spirit in the World in the Spirit Journal.

Quick Facts: ABV: 45.7% (91.4 proof)  |  Origin: Orkney Islands, Scotland  |  25 Year Age Statement  |  Distillery: Highland Park

Production & Heritage

Highland Park distillery sits on the remote Orkney Islands, north of the Scottish mainland, and has been producing single malt whisky since 1798. What separates the distillery from every other Scotch producer is its use of hand-cut Orkney heathered peat, sourced exclusively from Hobbister Moor — a stretch of treeless moorland composed largely of heather with very little moss. The 25 Year Old expression matures in a combination of first-fill sherry-seasoned European oak casks, American oak casks, and select refill casks, all filled with spirit distilled from 100% malted barley. That extended quarter-century maturation in the cool, maritime Orkney climate produces a whisky of remarkable depth while retaining the distillery's signature balance of sweetness and smoke.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Dark chocolate and acacia honey rise first, followed by honeyed heather and layers of dried fruit. Aromatic spices and a gentle thread of heathery peat smoke develop with time in the glass.

Taste: The entry is full-bodied and immediately rich, delivering dried orange peel and sherry sweetness across the palate. Mid-palate, flavors of honeycomb, buttery fudge, and warm vanilla emerge alongside a rich, earthy spiciness. Nutmeg and sweet dried fruits intensify toward the peak, grounded by a wisp of smoky peat that never overwhelms.

Finish: Long, balanced, and warming, with lingering notes of spice, sweet oak, and gentle smoke. The heathery peat signature fades slowly, leaving a honeyed warmth that invites the next sip.

How to Drink Highland Park 25

A whisky of this age, complexity, and pedigree is best experienced neat or with a few drops of water to open the sherry-influenced layers. Slightly warming the glass in your hand will coax out the honeyed heather and dried fruit aromatics. While it is primarily a sipping whisky, the 25 Year Old brings remarkable depth to a Rob Roy, where its sherry richness and spice complement sweet vermouth beautifully. A Blood and Sand benefits from the whisky's dried orange peel and smoke, adding gravitas to the cocktail's citrus-forward profile. In a simple Scotch Old Fashioned, the 25 Year Old's complexity means it needs minimal sweetening — just a barspoon of demerara syrup and a dash of Angostura.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Highland Park 25 taste like? Highland Park 25 delivers a full-bodied profile of dark chocolate, dried orange peel, honeycomb, and warm sherry spice, underpinned by the distillery's signature heathery peat smoke. The finish is long and warming with lingering sweet oak and gentle smoke.

How does Highland Park 25 compare to The Macallan 25 Sherry Oak? Both are sherried single malts with 25 years of maturation, but Highland Park 25 distinguishes itself with its layer of heathery Orkney peat smoke, giving it a sweet-smoky balance that Macallan 25 does not possess. Macallan 25 Sherry Oak leans more heavily into dried fruit and wood spice without any peat influence, and is typically bottled at 43% ABV compared to Highland Park's 45.7%.

Is Highland Park 25 good for sipping neat? Highland Park 25 is one of the finest neat-sipping single malts available, thanks to its layered complexity, balanced peat, and the extended maturation that integrates every element seamlessly. A few drops of water can further reveal its dried fruit and honeyed character.

Where is Highland Park 25 made? Highland Park 25 is distilled and matured at the Highland Park distillery on Mainland Orkney, the largest of the Orkney Islands situated off the northern coast of Scotland. The distillery has operated since 1798 and sources its distinctive heathered peat from nearby Hobbister Moor.

What foods pair well with Highland Park 25? Dark chocolate truffles amplify the whisky's cocoa and dried fruit notes. Aged Comté or Manchego cheese complements its nutty, honeyed sweetness. Smoked salmon echoes the gentle peat. Dried figs and dates mirror the sherry cask influence. Roasted walnuts bring out the spice and warm oak tones.

What sizes does Highland Park 25 come in? Highland Park 25 Year Old is available in the standard 750ml bottle size.

Is Highland Park 25 worth the price? Highland Park 25 positions firmly in the ultra-premium tier of single malt Scotch. Its perfect 100-point score at the 2013 Ultimate Spirits Challenge, combined with a genuine 25-year age statement and unique Orkney heathered-peat character, places it among the most critically acclaimed aged single malts in the world — a strong value proposition within its peer group of quarter-century-old Scotch whiskies.

Why Highland Park 25?

No other distillery in the world uses Orkney heathered peat, hand-cut from Hobbister Moor — a production detail that gives Highland Park 25 a sweet, floral smokiness impossible to replicate elsewhere. The combination of first-fill sherry-seasoned European oak, American oak, and refill casks over 25 years of Orkney maturation creates a whisky of extraordinary integration. Its historic perfect score at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge and recognition as Best Spirit in the World by F. Paul Pacult are not marketing talking points — they are verifiable milestones that few spirits of any category have achieved. For drinkers seeking a benchmark aged single malt with genuine character, Highland Park 25 delivers a depth and balance that justify its place in the conversation alongside the very best.
