Description

Glenrothes 42 Year 750ML is a limited-edition Speyside single malt Scotch whisky bottled at 43% ABV after more than four decades of maturation. Only 1,134 bottles were produced worldwide, drawn from four refill casks filled in May 1980 and finished in a single sherry-seasoned cask — making this one of the oldest and rarest expressions the distillery has ever released.

Quick Facts: ABV: 43%  |  Origin: Speyside, Scotland  |  Age: 42 Years  |  Distillery: The Glenrothes (est. 1879)

Production & Heritage

The Glenrothes Distillery was established in 1879 in Rothes, Speyside, and is currently owned by Edrington. The distillery is known for its exceptionally tall copper pot stills and a slow distillation process that runs at roughly half the speed of many other Speyside operations, maximizing copper contact and yielding a lighter, fruitier new-make spirit. Water is sourced from the Ardcanny and Lady's Well springs. For this 42 Year Old expression, Master Whisky Maker Laura Rampling selected four exceptional refill casks originally filled in May 1980, then married them in a single sherry-seasoned cask to achieve a final layer of complexity before bottling at a natural 43% ABV.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Sun-ripened apricots lead, followed by candied orange peel, sugared almonds, and a thread of coriander seed. The sherry-seasoned finishing cask adds a gently sweet, spiced warmth beneath the fruit.

Taste: The entry is immediately creamy, with rich brown sugar and honeycomb arriving first. The mid-palate deepens into vanilla custard and toasted almonds, while fragrant orange oil and light oak tannins emerge toward the peak, giving the whisky a layered, structured sweetness without heaviness.

Finish: Long and enveloping, with a creamy caress of vanilla and toasted almonds that lingers well past the last sip. Delicate dried fruit and faint oak spice persist at the edges, slowly fading into a soft, honeyed warmth.

How to Drink Glenrothes 42

A whisky of this age and rarity is best enjoyed neat in a tulip-shaped nosing glass, allowing 10–15 minutes for the spirit to open. A few drops of still water can further unlock the apricot and honeycomb notes without diminishing the delicate oak structure. Given its scarcity and complexity, mixing in cocktails is not recommended — this is a contemplative dram meant to be savored on its own terms.

  • Marking a milestone anniversary, retirement, or career achievement

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Glenrothes 42 taste like? It presents rich honeycomb and brown sugar on the palate, layered with creamy vanilla, toasted almonds, and fragrant orange oil, all anchored by gentle oak from over four decades of maturation.

How does Glenrothes 42 compare to The Macallan aged expressions? Both distilleries are owned by Edrington and share an emphasis on sherry-seasoned oak cask maturation, but Glenrothes is distilled more slowly through taller copper stills, typically producing a lighter, more fruit-forward spirit. At 42 years old, the Glenrothes leans toward delicate apricot and honeycomb, whereas comparable Macallan releases tend to emphasize dried fruit and baking spice intensity.

Is Glenrothes 42 good for sipping neat? Absolutely — this is a whisky designed for unhurried neat drinking. Its 43% ABV delivers full flavor without excessive heat, and the decades of cask maturation have created a remarkably smooth, layered profile.

Where is Glenrothes 42 made? It is produced at The Glenrothes Distillery in the town of Rothes, within Scotland's Speyside region, using water drawn from the local Ardcanny and Lady's Well springs.

What foods pair well with Glenrothes 42? Aged Comté or Gruyère cheese complements the nutty vanilla notes; seared foie gras echoes its honeyed richness; dark chocolate with candied orange mirrors the citrus oil character; poached stone fruit with almond cream connects directly with the apricot and marzipan profile; and lightly smoked Scottish salmon provides a savory counterpoint to the whisky's sweetness.

What sizes does Glenrothes 42 come in? This expression is available in the standard 750ml bottle size as part of its limited release of 1,134 bottles globally.

Is Glenrothes 42 worth the price? Glenrothes 42 Year Old positions firmly in the ultra-premium tier, justified by its extreme age, single sherry-cask finishing, hand-selection by Master Whisky Maker Laura Rampling, and strict global limitation to 1,134 bottles — factors that place it among the most collectible Speyside single malts available.

Why Glenrothes 42?

What separates this bottling from other aged Speyside whiskies is the combination of provenance, scarcity, and deliberate cask management. The spirit spent over four decades in four carefully selected refill casks before Laura Rampling married them in a single sherry-seasoned cask, a finishing step that unified the liquid without overwhelming the delicate fruit character built over 42 years. With only 1,134 bottles released, it represents one of the oldest official expressions The Glenrothes has ever offered. For collectors and serious single malt drinkers, this is a rare opportunity to experience Speyside distilling at an age statement few distilleries can credibly achieve.
