Description

The Glenlivet 12 Year 750ML is a double oak-matured Speyside single malt Scotch whisky bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml bottle. Winner of a Gold medal at the 2023 International Wine & Spirit Competition, this 12-year-old expression remains one of the most recognized entry points into single malt Scotch — and for good reason.

Quick Facts: ABV: 40% (80 Proof)  |  Origin: Speyside, Scotland  |  Age: 12 Years  |  Distillery: The Glenlivet

Production & Heritage

The Glenlivet Distillery was founded in 1824 by George Smith, making it one of the first legally licensed distilleries in Scotland. The whisky is distilled from 100% malted barley using traditional double copper pot stills, then matured for a minimum of 12 years using a double oak process — first in European oak casks, followed by American oak casks. Water is drawn from Josie's Well, a natural spring fed by the River Livet that filters through peat-free granite, which contributes to the whisky's characteristically light, unsmoked profile and distinguishes it from peatier Highland and Islay malts.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Honeysuckle and summer orchard fruits greet the nose first, followed by a wave of fresh tropical fruit — predominantly pineapple. A gentle floral backbone ties it together, giving the impression of walking through a sunlit garden.

Taste: The entry is silky and sweet, with vanilla custard and ripe pineapple dominating the front palate. At mid-palate, the European oak influence emerges through subtle bitter cocoa and dried fruit. The peak delivers a balanced interplay of smooth fruit sweetness and gentle spice, never tipping too far in either direction.

Finish: Medium in length with a creamy, almost confectionery quality — marzipan and crushed hazelnuts linger alongside a trace of vanilla. The texture remains soft throughout, fading cleanly without bitterness.

How to Drink Glenlivet 12

Neat or with a few drops of water is the ideal starting point; the water opens up the tropical fruit aromas without diluting the creamy mid-palate. A single large ice cube works well for warm-weather sipping. For cocktails, try a Rob Roy, where the fruit-forward profile complements sweet vermouth beautifully; a Penicillin, where the honeyed sweetness plays against ginger and lemon; or a Whisky Highball with quality soda water, which amplifies the pineapple and floral notes into a refreshing long drink.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Glenlivet 12 taste like? Glenlivet 12 is a fruit-driven single malt dominated by fresh pineapple, vanilla, and honeysuckle, finishing with creamy marzipan and hazelnut. It is light-bodied, unpeated, and exceptionally smooth for a 12-year-old Scotch.

How does Glenlivet 12 compare to Glenfiddich 12? Both are 40% ABV Speyside single malts aged 12 years, but Glenlivet 12 tends toward bolder tropical fruit and marzipan notes thanks to its European-then-American oak maturation, while Glenfiddich 12 leans lighter with pear and butterscotch from its American and European oak combination. Glenfiddich holds the title of the world's best-selling single malt, though Glenlivet consistently rivals it in both sales and critical recognition.

Is Glenlivet 12 good for beginners? Glenlivet 12 is widely regarded as one of the best entry-level single malts available, thanks to its approachable sweetness, zero peat smoke, and balanced complexity. Respected critic Paul Pacult has called it "one of Speyside's definitive malts."

Where is Glenlivet 12 made? Glenlivet 12 is produced at The Glenlivet Distillery in the parish of Glenlivet within Scotland's Speyside region, an area renowned for producing the country's most fruit-forward and elegant single malts. The distillery draws its water from Josie's Well, a natural spring filtered through peat-free granite.

What foods pair well with Glenlivet 12? Smoked salmon and cream cheese canapés complement the whisky's tropical sweetness. Aged Gruyère or Comté cheese mirrors the nutty marzipan finish. Fresh pineapple or stone fruit tarts echo the dominant fruit notes. Dark chocolate with 60–70% cacao picks up the subtle cocoa undertones. Honey-glazed roasted almonds bridge the vanilla and hazelnut elements of the finish.

What sizes does Glenlivet 12 come in? Glenlivet 12 is widely available in 750ml, 1L, and 1.75L bottles, as well as 50ml miniatures for sampling.

Is Glenlivet 12 worth the price? Glenlivet 12 positions as a core entry-level single malt Scotch, and its IWSC Gold medal, 12-year age statement, and double oak maturation process deliver strong value relative to similarly priced Speyside competitors.

Why Glenlivet 12?

The double oak maturation — European oak followed by American oak — gives this whisky a layered complexity uncommon at its price tier, combining the dried fruit depth of sherry-seasoned wood with the vanilla brightness of bourbon-style casks. The 2023 IWSC Gold and 2023 World Whiskies Awards Gold validate what two centuries of production have refined. The peat-free granite filtration at Josie's Well is not a marketing footnote; it fundamentally shapes the whisky's clean, fruity character and sets it apart from distilleries relying on peatier water sources. For a 12-year-old single malt from one of Scotland's oldest licensed distilleries, Glenlivet 12 continues to justify its place as a Speyside benchmark.
