Quick Facts: ABV: Varies by batch (approx. 57–59%)  |  Origin: Speyside, Scotland  |  Age: 10 Years  |  Distillery: GlenAllachie

Production & Heritage

The GlenAllachie distillery sits at the foot of Ben Rinnes near Aberlour in the heart of Speyside. Billy Walker — previously responsible for the revival of GlenDronach and BenRiach — acquired GlenAllachie in 2017 and quickly transformed it into one of Scotland's most talked-about independent distilleries. The spirit is produced using a semi-lauter mash tun, six stainless steel washbacks, two lantern-shaped wash stills, and two onion-shaped spirit stills. What distinguishes the new-make character is an exceptionally long fermentation time of 160 to 164 hours, which yields a markedly fruitier, heavier spirit. The 10 Year Cask Strength expression marries liquid aged in a combination of Pedro Ximénez sherry, Oloroso sherry, red wine, and virgin oak casks — all selected and vatted by Walker himself. Because it is released in numbered batches with no chill filtration and at natural cask strength, the ABV shifts slightly from release to release, keeping each batch distinctive.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Rich mocha and toasted hazelnuts lead, followed by fig syrup, honeycomb, and dried red berries. A deeper layer reveals heather honey and a suggestion of molasses.

Taste: The entry is dense with dark chocolate and ripe figs, giving way to brandied cherries, toffee sauce, and baking spices at mid-palate. As it develops, flavors of Black Forest gâteau, grilled honeycomb, and damson plum emerge, with raisins and orange peel adding complexity. A splash of water opens up additional roasted nut and sweet spice notes without diluting the intensity.

Finish: Long and warming, with lingering mocha, molasses tart, and dried fruit that gradually recede into gentle oak spice. The texture is full and slightly oily, leaving a satisfying coating of dark chocolate and heather honey.

How to Drink GlenAllachie 10 CS

Neat with a few drops of water is the ideal starting point — the cask strength potency rewards gradual dilution, which unlocks successive layers of fruit and spice. It also stands up exceptionally well over a single large ice cube for those who prefer a chilled dram. Three cocktails where this whisky excels: a Rob Roy, where the sherry-cask richness amplifies sweet vermouth into a deeply layered drink; a Blood & Sand, where the dark fruit character and orange-peel spice mirror the cocktail's classic ingredients; and a Whisky Sour, where the higher proof ensures the mocha and toffee notes punch through citrus and egg white without fading.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does GlenAllachie 10 CS taste like? It delivers a dense, sherry-driven profile dominated by dark chocolate, ripe figs, toffee, and brandied cherries, underscored by baking spices and mocha. The cask strength ABV amplifies those flavors with considerable intensity and a long, warming finish.

How does GlenAllachie 10 CS compare to Aberlour A'bunadh? Both are cask strength, sherry-matured Speyside single malts released in numbered batches, but GlenAllachie 10 CS carries a stated age of 10 years while A'bunadh is a no-age-statement expression. GlenAllachie also incorporates red wine and virgin oak casks alongside its sherry wood, which contributes additional dried-fruit and spice complexity not typically found in A'bunadh's pure Oloroso maturation.

Is GlenAllachie 10 CS good for sipping neat? Absolutely — it is designed to be enjoyed neat or with a small addition of water, which tempers the proof and reveals layers of fruit, chocolate, and honeycomb that reward slow, attentive sipping.

Where is GlenAllachie 10 CS made? It is distilled at the GlenAllachie distillery located near Aberlour in Speyside, Scotland, at the foot of Ben Rinnes. The distillery has been independently owned by Billy Walker and his partners since 2017.

What foods pair well with GlenAllachie 10 CS? Dark chocolate truffles complement the mocha and cocoa notes directly. Aged Manchego or Comté cheeses echo the nutty, caramelized character. Fig and walnut cake mirrors the dried-fruit and toasted-nut profile. Charcuterie with dried cherries works alongside the brandied-cherry and spice elements. Blue cheese intensifies the sweetness and creates a classic sweet-savory contrast.

What sizes does GlenAllachie 10 CS come in? The standard release is a 750ml bottle, which is the primary format available in the U.S. market.

Is GlenAllachie 10 CS worth the price? It positions as a mid-premium cask strength single malt, and the combination of a 10-year age statement, multi-cask maturation program, and batch-release format delivers significant complexity for its price tier — particularly given the World Whiskies Award pedigree attached to the expression.

Why GlenAllachie 10 CS?

This is a cask strength Speyside single malt shaped by one of the most respected figures in Scotch whisky today. Billy Walker's insistence on an unusually long fermentation — over 160 hours — produces a heavier, fruitier spirit that takes to sherry and wine cask maturation with remarkable synergy. The decision to vat Pedro Ximénez, Oloroso, red wine, and virgin oak casks together, rather than relying on a single wood type, gives the 10 Year Cask Strength a layered complexity that many age-stated competitors in the category simply do not achieve. With a World's Best Single Malt award already to its name and a loyal following that hunts each new batch release, this expression has quickly earned its place among the most compelling sherried Speyside malts on the market.
