Description
Drappier Carte d'Or Brut 750ML is a Pinot Noir-dominant Brut Champagne from the Côte des Bar, bottled at approximately 12% ABV. This flagship cuvée from one of Champagne's most storied family estates earned its reputation in part as the house wine of General Charles de Gaulle, whose home at Colombey-les-Deux-Églises sat just miles from the Drappier cellars.
Quick Facts: ABV: ~12% | Origin: Côte des Bar, Champagne, France | Brut NV | Distillery: Maison Drappier
Production & Heritage
Maison Drappier was founded in 1808 in Urville, a village in the Aube department of southern Champagne. The estate's vaulted cellars, however, predate the house by centuries — they were built in 1152 by Cistercian monks from the nearby Abbey of Clairvaux, established by Saint Bernard himself. Now led by eighth-generation vigneron Michel Drappier, the house farms over 100 hectares and maintains a philosophy of minimal sulfite use. Carte d'Or is composed primarily of Pinot Noir (approximately 75%), complemented by Chardonnay and Petit Meunier. A portion of the base wines sees partial aging in large oak casks before undergoing traditional méthode champenoise secondary fermentation. The dosage is kept relatively restrained, allowing the fruit-forward character of Côte des Bar Pinot Noir to take center stage.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: The nose opens with ripe white peach and golden apple before revealing subtle brioche and almond notes. A hint of dried flowers and chalk emerges with time in the glass.
Taste: The entry is generous and fruit-driven, with red apple skin and pear giving way to toasted hazelnut and a lightly honeyed mid-palate. The mousse is fine and persistent, delivering texture without overwhelming the delicate stone-fruit core. A thread of minerality anchors the palate and keeps the wine focused.
Finish: Medium in length with a clean, chalky fade and lingering notes of citrus zest and fresh bread crust. The finish is dry without austerity, inviting another sip.
How to Drink Carte d'Or
Carte d'Or drinks beautifully on its own, well-chilled to around 8–10°C (46–50°F), served in a tulip glass to concentrate its aromatics. Its Pinot Noir backbone also makes it a versatile cocktail base: try it in a French 75, where the wine's body stands up to gin and lemon without losing its identity; in a Champagne Cocktail with a sugar cube and Angostura bitters, which plays off the brioche notes; or a Bellini, where its ripe stone-fruit character harmonizes naturally with white peach purée.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Carte d'Or taste like? Drappier Carte d'Or delivers ripe orchard fruit — apple, pear, white peach — layered with toasted almond, brioche, and a chalky mineral finish. It is generous and fruit-forward compared to many Brut NV Champagnes, owing to its high proportion of Pinot Noir.
How does Carte d'Or compare to Moët & Chandon Impérial Brut? Carte d'Or is notably more Pinot Noir-dominant and sourced primarily from the Côte des Bar, giving it a rounder, more fruit-driven profile than the Chardonnay- and Meunier-leaning blend of Moët Impérial. Drappier also operates on a much smaller scale as a family estate rather than a major négociant house.
Is Carte d'Or good for sipping neat? Absolutely — its balanced acidity, fine mousse, and fruit-forward aromatics make it an excellent standalone pour that does not require food to shine, though it pairs well with a range of dishes.
Where is Carte d'Or made? Carte d'Or is produced by Maison Drappier in Urville, located in the Côte des Bar sub-region of Champagne, France. The estate's 12th-century cellars are among the oldest in the region.
What foods pair well with Carte d'Or? Fresh oysters and shellfish complement the wine's minerality; aged Comté cheese mirrors its nutty undertones; smoked salmon works with the fine mousse and citrus notes; chicken or pork rillettes echo the brioche character; and sushi or sashimi benefit from the wine's clean acidity.
What sizes does Carte d'Or come in? Drappier Carte d'Or Brut is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle, and the house also produces it in half-bottles (375ml), magnums (1.5L), and several larger formats including Jeroboam and Methuselah.
Is Carte d'Or worth the price? Carte d'Or positions as a mid-range Champagne that punches well above typical entry-level offerings, providing estate-grown, terroir-driven character at a price point below most prestige cuvées — strong value for the quality and heritage behind it.
Why Carte d'Or?
Drappier Carte d'Or stands apart through its uncompromising commitment to Pinot Noir and the Côte des Bar terroir, a sub-region that has historically been overshadowed by the Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs but produces Champagnes of real depth and character. The house's minimal-sulfite approach and use of traditional large-oak fermentation for a portion of its base wines result in a cuvée with genuine complexity that does not rely on heavy dosage. With eight generations of family stewardship and cellars that predate the Champagne trade itself, Carte d'Or carries a lineage few brands can match. For drinkers seeking a serious, food-friendly Champagne rooted in place rather than in brand prestige alone, this bottling delivers convincingly.
