Quick Facts: ABV: 13%  |  Origin: Santa Maria Valley AVA, Santa Barbara County, California  |  Style: Barrel-Fermented Chardonnay  |  Producer: Costa de Oro Winery

Production & Heritage

Costa de Oro Winery draws its fruit from the Gold Coast Vineyard, situated along the Fuglar's Point bluff in the Santa Maria Valley — a site defined by marine fog influence and cool Pacific breezes. Founder Gary Burk developed his winemaking expertise working alongside Jim Clendenen at Au Bon Climat from 1994 to 2002, during which time Gold Coast Vineyard grapes were sold to that acclaimed producer. The Chardonnay undergoes native yeast fermentation — forgoing commercial yeast strains — and is aged in François Frères French oak barrels, with approximately 25% new wood for the estate bottling, allowing vineyard character to lead rather than oak influence.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Tropical fruit and caramel lead the nose, followed by white flower perfume and a delicate thread of sea mist. Underneath, Bosc pear and lemon peel add a bright, orchard-fruit dimension.

Taste: The palate opens with luscious pineapple and ripe apple, transitioning into vanilla and dried pineapple at mid-palate. Hints of basil, toast, and wood spice develop alongside a balancing citrus acidity, while a subtle mineral streak runs throughout — a signature of the Fuglar's Point terroir.

Finish: Long, rounded, and layered, with lingering notes of lemon zest and light caramel. The oak integration remains measured, letting fruit and mineral carry the final impression.

How to Drink Costa De Oro Chardonnay

Serve lightly chilled at around 50–55°F to let the aromatic complexity unfold; this wine rewards attentive sipping on its own but holds up beautifully with food. In cocktails, it works in a White Wine Spritz where the tropical fruit notes complement a splash of elderflower liqueur, a Kir using crème de pêche to echo the pear and apricot character, or a Sangria Blanca where its pineapple and citrus layers add genuine depth to the punch.

Best For

  • Hosting a California wine dinner focused on cool-climate Chardonnay
  • Gifting a white wine enthusiast who appreciates native-fermentation winemaking
  • Pairing with a seafood-centered holiday meal
  • Building a Santa Barbara County cellar selection alongside Pinot Noir

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Costa De Oro Chardonnay taste like? It delivers ripe pineapple, Bosc pear, and dried tropical fruit up front, balanced by vanilla, toast, and a mineral undertone that keeps the palate fresh and layered.

How does Costa De Oro Chardonnay compare to Au Bon Climat Chardonnay? Both source fruit from the Santa Maria Valley and share a cool-climate elegance, which is unsurprising given that Gold Coast Vineyard grapes were once sold to Au Bon Climat. Costa De Oro tends to show slightly more oak richness and tropical intensity, while Au Bon Climat typically leans toward a leaner, more Burgundian style.

Is Costa De Oro Chardonnay good for sipping neat? Yes — the native fermentation lends textural complexity and the 13% ABV keeps the wine balanced, making it rewarding to drink on its own without food.

Where is Costa De Oro Chardonnay made? It is produced by Costa de Oro Winery from estate fruit grown on the Gold Coast Vineyard at Fuglar's Point bluff in the Santa Maria Valley AVA of Santa Barbara County, California.

What foods pair well with Costa De Oro Chardonnay? Butter-poached lobster mirrors the wine's richness; roasted chicken with a lemon-herb pan sauce complements its citrus acidity; grilled halibut with tropical salsa echoes the pineapple notes; aged Gruyère stands up to the oak complexity; and corn bisque highlights the wine's natural creaminess.

What sizes does Costa De Oro Chardonnay come in? Costa De Oro Chardonnay is available in the standard 750ml bottle.

Is Costa De Oro Chardonnay worth the price? With a 91-point average from critics and multiple Top 100 Wines of the Year honors, it positions as a mid-premium California Chardonnay that over-delivers relative to many comparably priced Santa Barbara County whites.

Why Costa De Oro Chardonnay?

What separates this wine from the crowded California Chardonnay field is its commitment to native yeast fermentation — a practice that strips away the homogenizing effect of commercial strains and lets the maritime-influenced Gold Coast Vineyard site speak directly. The result has been validated by 90-plus-point scores from Robert Parker, Wine Spectator's James Laube, and Wine & Spirits Magazine across multiple vintages. Gary Burk's lineage from Au Bon Climat grounds the winemaking in a Burgundian sensibility, yet the finished wine retains a distinctly Californian generosity of fruit. For anyone seeking a Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay with genuine site identity and critical backing, this bottling makes a compelling case.
