Description

Compass Box 3 Year 750ML is the "Three Year Old Deluxe," a limited-edition blended malt Scotch whisky from Compass Box, bottled at 49.2% ABV in a 750ml bottle. Released in 2016, it was a deliberate provocation: although the youngest component was just three years old, more than 99% of the blend was far older, and Scotch labeling rules only allow the youngest age to appear on the label.

Quick Facts: ABV: 49.2% | Origin: Scotland | Style: Blended Malt Scotch, Limited Edition | Producer: Compass Box Whisky Co.

Production & Heritage

Compass Box was founded in London in 2000 by John Glaser, a former Johnnie Walker marketer who set out to make blended Scotch creative and transparent again. The company buys mature whisky from distilleries across Scotland, blends and often re-racks it in custom French oak, and publishes recipes in as much detail as the law allows. The Three Year Old Deluxe was its most pointed statement on that last issue. Roughly 0.4% of the blend was a three-year-old Clynelish, while the balance was older Clynelish and peated Talisker-style malts aged well beyond a decade, yet regulations forced the label to say "3 Years Old." Compass Box released it as part of its campaign for the right to disclose full component ages, and the whisky itself, waxy, fruity and gently smoky, became a collector favorite.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Waxy orchard fruit, lemon oil and honeyed cereal, with soft coastal smoke and a floral, heathery lift. Candle wax and green apple are the signature Clynelish markers.

Taste: Rich and textural at 49.2%, with baked apple, vanilla cream and beeswax up front, then a gentle wave of peat smoke and sea salt. Ginger and white pepper add energy through the mid-palate.

Finish: Long and waxy, with smoke drifting over lemon, honey and malt. The finish stays clean and mineral, with no heavy oak tannin.

How to Drink Compass Box 3 Year

Drink Compass Box 3 Year neat in a tulip glass, and consider a few drops of water to open the waxy fruit under the smoke. It is a limited release that most buyers will want to sip, but Compass Box whiskies are built for the bar as well. A Highland Highball with chilled soda and a lemon twist shows off its texture, a Blood and Sand with orange juice, cherry liqueur and sweet vermouth suits its fruit, and a Smoky Boulevardier variation turns the light peat into an asset.

Best For

  • Collectors of Compass Box limited editions and whisky-industry curiosities
  • Fans of Clynelish-style waxy Highland malt
  • Gifting a Scotch drinker who enjoys the story behind the bottle
  • Sipping neat on an evening when you want fruit, texture and a little smoke

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Compass Box 3 Year taste like? It is waxy, fruity and lightly smoky: baked apple, lemon oil, honey, beeswax and vanilla, with a wave of soft peat and sea salt and a long mineral finish. It tastes far older than its label suggests.

How does Compass Box 3 Year compare to Compass Box Spice Tree? Spice Tree is a richer, oak-driven blend finished in heavily toasted French oak heads, with clove, cinnamon and dark fruit. The Three Year Old Deluxe is lighter on wood, higher in strength, and shows more distillery character: waxy fruit and gentle smoke rather than spice.

Is Compass Box 3 Year good for cocktails? Yes, though most people will sip a limited edition. Its 49.2% strength carries through citrus and vermouth, so it works well in a highball, a Blood and Sand or a smoky Boulevardier.

Where is Compass Box 3 Year made? The component malts were distilled in Scotland, principally Clynelish in the Highlands along with peated island malt, and blended and bottled by Compass Box, which is headquartered in London.

What foods pair well with Compass Box 3 Year? Smoked salmon, oysters, aged Gouda, honey-glazed pork and apple tart all echo its waxy fruit and gentle smoke. A simple shortbread works surprisingly well too.

What sizes does Compass Box 3 Year come in? The Three Year Old Deluxe was released in the 750ml bottle for the United States, in a numbered limited run.

Is Compass Box 3 Year worth the price? As a discontinued limited edition built mostly from well-aged Clynelish and peated malt, it is priced as a collector bottle. For fans of Compass Box or of waxy Highland whisky, it offers both a distinctive dram and a piece of modern Scotch history.

Why Compass Box 3 Year?

Compass Box 3 Year is the rare whisky whose label is the point. By bottling a blend that was overwhelmingly mature and calling it three years old, John Glaser exposed how little Scotch labeling rules let producers tell drinkers, and he did it with a whisky good enough that nobody could dismiss the gesture as a stunt. The liquid is textbook Compass Box, waxy Clynelish fruit lifted by soft smoke and bottled at a strength that keeps it vivid. For collectors and for anyone who likes whisky with a story, it is a bottle worth seeking out.
