Quick Facts: ABV: 14.5%  |  Origin: Horse Heaven Hills, Columbia Valley, Washington  |  Blend: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 2% Syrah  |  Winery: Columbia Crest

Production & Heritage

Columbia Crest was founded in 1982 as the very first winery established in what would become the Horse Heaven Hills AVA, one of Washington's most celebrated grape-growing regions. The vineyards sit on south-facing slopes exposed to strong westerly winds funneled through the Columbia Gorge — conditions that naturally reduce botrytis and mildew while thickening grape skins, producing fruit with a notably high skin-to-juice ratio that translates directly into color, tannin structure, and concentration. The H3 expression undergoes 6 to 10 days of fermentation on the skins to extract optimum fruit and structural components, followed by 9 months of aging in a combination of new and older French and American oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with ripe black cherry and blackcurrant, moving into perfumed floral notes and a backdrop of cedar. Deeper inhalation reveals touches of chocolate, vanilla, and a faint smoky quality from the oak aging.

Taste: The entry is juicy and fruit-forward, with plum and dark berry flavors arriving immediately on the palate. At mid-palate, the Merlot component adds suppleness while currant, sage, and earthy mineral tones develop alongside secondary notes of coffee and tobacco. The blend's structure is generous without being heavy — the fruit stays in focus throughout.

Finish: The finish is long and expressive, closing with soft cocoa-dusted tannins and lingering cassis. A thread of vanilla from the oak sustains the ending without overwhelming the fruit character.

How to Drink H3 Cabernet Sauvignon

This wine drinks well at slightly below room temperature, around 60–65°F, and benefits from 15 to 20 minutes of breathing after opening. Pour into a large-bowled glass to let the aromatics expand fully.

For cocktail-inspired serves: a classic Kalimotxo (red wine and cola over ice) works surprisingly well here given the wine's dark fruit intensity. A Red Wine Spritzer with sparkling water and a citrus twist makes a refreshing warm-weather option. And in a New York Sour, the H3's deep berry profile and soft tannins float beautifully over a whiskey sour base.

Best For

Frequently Asked Questions

What does H3 Cabernet Sauvignon taste like? It leads with ripe black cherry, plum, and blackcurrant fruit, supported by cedar, chocolate, and soft cocoa tannins. The overall profile is juicy and fruit-forward with enough earthy complexity to keep it interesting.

How does H3 Cabernet Sauvignon compare to McManis Cabernet Sauvignon? Both are frequently cited as top-performing budget Cabernets under $15, and direct comparison tastings often place them side by side. McManis tends to lean toward a slightly more fruit-concentrated California style, while the H3 brings more mineral-driven complexity and structure from its Horse Heaven Hills terroir.

Is H3 Cabernet Sauvignon good for everyday sipping? Absolutely — its smooth tannins, generous fruit, and approachable weight make it one of the more reliable daily-pour Cabernets at its price point. It requires no decanting to enjoy, though a short rest in the glass does help.

Where is H3 Cabernet Sauvignon made? It is produced by Columbia Crest, the first winery established in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA within Washington's Columbia Valley. The vineyards benefit from south-facing slopes and persistent winds off the Columbia Gorge that create ideal growing conditions for thick-skinned red varieties.

What foods pair well with H3 Cabernet Sauvignon? Grilled ribeye steak complements its dark fruit and tannin structure. Braised short ribs mirror the wine's richness and cocoa undertones. Aged cheddar or Gouda highlights the vanilla and cedar notes. Mushroom risotto pairs well with its earthy mid-palate. Dark chocolate desserts echo the wine's cocoa-dusted finish.

What sizes does H3 Cabernet Sauvignon come in? The standard release is available in the 750ml bottle format.

Is H3 Cabernet Sauvignon worth the price? H3 positions as a strong entry-level to mid-range expression, consistently punching above its weight class with Platinum and Gold competition medals and steady critical scores in the mid-80s from publications like Wine Enthusiast.

Why H3 Cabernet Sauvignon?

What separates this wine from the crowded field of sub-$15 Cabernets is its source material. Horse Heaven Hills fruit, grown on wind-battered south-facing slopes that produce exceptionally thick-skinned grapes, gives the H3 a density and structural backbone uncommon at this price tier. The 77/21/2 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah is deliberately tuned for approachability — Merlot softens the mid-palate while a small Syrah addition adds aromatic lift. Multiple competition accolades, including Platinum at the San Diego International Wine Competition and Gold medals at both the Sunset International and San Francisco Chronicle wine competitions, confirm that this is not just an everyday red — it is one of Washington's most decorated value Cabernets.
