Description

Camus VSOP 700ML is a single-estate Borderies cognac bottled at 40% ABV, produced from Ugni Blanc grapes grown exclusively on the Camus family's own vineyards. It earned a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and stands as the most awarded VSOP cognac at that competition between 2013 and 2021.

Quick Facts: ABV: 40%  |  Origin: Borderies, Cognac, France  |  VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale)  |  Distillery: Maison Camus (est. 1863)

Production & Heritage

Maison Camus was founded in 1863 and remains family-owned, now in its fifth generation — a rarity among major cognac houses. The VSOP expression draws entirely from the family's 188 hectares of vineyards in the Borderies cru, the smallest and rarest of the six cognac appellations, representing less than 5% of the total cognac AOC. Distillation follows the traditional "on the lees" method using small copper pot stills, a technique that retains richer fruit character and a rounder mouthfeel in the final spirit. This single-estate approach means every step from vine to bottle remains under direct family control, distinguishing Camus VSOP from blended multi-source cognacs offered by the larger houses.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Vanilla pod and orange zest arrive first, followed by soft spice and delicate floral tones. A gentle nuttiness rounds out the nose, hinting at toasted almond beneath the fruit.

Taste: The entry is ample and unctuous, with ripe apricot and dried stone fruit leading into a mid-palate of white flowers and gentle baking spice. The structure is robust yet elegant, carrying a light hint of woodiness that adds dimension without overpowering the fruit.

Finish: Medium in length with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Vanilla, caramel, and soft oak linger as the spice gradually fades.

How to Drink Camus VSOP

Neat or with a single cube of ice is the most direct way to appreciate the Borderies fruit character; a few drops of water can open up the floral aromatics further. Three cocktails that suit this cognac well: a Sidecar, where the apricot and vanilla tones complement the Cointreau and citrus; a French 75 (cognac variation), in which the floral elegance pairs naturally with Champagne and lemon; and a Stinger, where the spirit's inherent sweetness balances white crème de menthe without losing complexity.

  • After-dinner sipping alongside dessert or a cheese course
  • Building a home bar with a versatile, cocktail-friendly VSOP
  • Introducing someone to Borderies-style cognac for the first time

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Camus VSOP taste like? Camus VSOP delivers ripe apricot, vanilla bean, and toasted almond on the palate, supported by white floral notes and gentle spice. It finishes with smooth caramel and soft oak.

How does Camus VSOP compare to Hennessy Privilège VSOP? Hennessy Privilège blends eaux-de-vie from multiple crus and tends toward bolder oak and pepper notes, while Camus VSOP is a single-estate Borderies expression that emphasizes fruit roundness and floral finesse. The two sit in a similar price tier, but Camus offers a distinctly terroir-driven profile due to its single-cru sourcing.

Is Camus VSOP good for sipping neat? Yes — its ample, unctuous texture and layered fruit-to-spice progression make it well suited for neat sipping. A touch of water or ice can further highlight the floral and vanilla aromatics.

Where is Camus VSOP made? Camus VSOP is produced at Maison Camus in the Borderies cru of the Cognac region in southwestern France. The Borderies is the smallest of the six cognac appellations, prized for producing particularly round and aromatic eaux-de-vie.

What foods pair well with Camus VSOP? Dark chocolate truffles complement the vanilla and caramel notes; aged Comté cheese mirrors the nutty undertones; fresh stone fruits like apricots echo the spirit's core flavor; foie gras on brioche matches its unctuous texture; and almond tart reinforces the toasted nut character on the nose.

What sizes does Camus VSOP come in? The standard offering is the 700ml bottle, which is the most widely available format internationally.

Is Camus VSOP worth the price? Camus VSOP positions as a premium VSOP expression, competing directly with offerings from larger houses like Hennessy and Rémy Martin. Its single-estate Borderies sourcing, on-the-lees distillation, and extensive competition record — including Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition — represent strong value within that tier.

Why Camus VSOP?

The single-estate model is the defining differentiator here: while most VSOP cognacs blend eaux-de-vie purchased from multiple growers across several crus, every drop of Camus VSOP originates from the family's own 188 hectares in the Borderies. That level of vertical control is uncommon in the category and gives the spirit a consistent, terroir-specific character that multi-source blends cannot replicate. The on-the-lees distillation in small copper pot stills further enriches the texture and fruit intensity. Backed by a Double Gold Medal and recognition as the most awarded VSOP cognac at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition over nearly a decade, this bottling has earned critical validation to match its heritage.
