Description

Benromach 15 Year 750ML is a lightly peated Speyside single malt Scotch whisky bottled at 43% ABV in a 750ml bottle. A Platinum Award winner at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and named Whisky of the Year 2020 by The Whisky Exchange in a blind tasting, this expression represents Benromach's flagship aged release and a deliberate revival of pre-1960s Speyside character.

Quick Facts: ABV: 43%  |  Origin: Speyside, Scotland  |  Age: 15 Years  |  Distillery: Benromach

Production & Heritage

Benromach Distillery, located in Forres on the western edge of Speyside, was originally founded in 1898 but fell silent in 1983. Gordon & MacPhail purchased the distillery in 1993 and spent years restoring it before reopening in 1998 with a specific mission: to recreate the smoky, complex style of Speyside malt that disappeared when commercial maltings replaced local peat-fired kilns. The 15 Year expression uses peated malt at approximately 12 parts per million and matures exclusively in first-fill bourbon and sherry casks, producing a whisky where fruit, smoke, and oak exist in measured balance rather than competing for dominance.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Sweet toffee and caramel arrive first, followed by rich forest fruits and dark chocolate. A thread of cracked black pepper and soft peat smoke weaves underneath, adding depth without overpowering the sweeter notes.

Taste: The palate opens creamy and sweet, with ripe apples and black cherry giving way to toasted malt and charred oak at mid-palate. Dark chocolate and orange peel emerge alongside subtle smoke, while a honeyed richness carries the flavors through to a gentle spice finish.

Finish: Medium in length with a creamy texture, trailing soft peat smoke and dried fruit. Leather, cigar wrapper, and a faint clove warmth linger as the smoke gradually fades.

How to Drink Benromach 15

Neat or with a few drops of water is the best way to appreciate how the light peat integrates with 15 years of first-fill cask maturation — water in particular opens up the fruit and chocolate notes. This whisky also holds its own in cocktails: a Rob Roy, where the smoke and dark fruit stand up to sweet vermouth; a Blood and Sand, where the cherry and orange peel notes mirror the cocktail's citrus and cherry components; or an Old Fashioned, where the creamy sweetness and subtle peat add complexity that replaces the need for heavy sweetening.

Best For

  • Gifting a whisky enthusiast who appreciates Speyside with a twist
  • After-dinner dram alongside dark chocolate or dessert
  • Exploring lightly peated Scotch without committing to heavy Islay smoke
  • Building a Speyside collection that goes beyond the usual suspects

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Benromach 15 taste like? Benromach 15 delivers creamy sweetness with ripe apple, black cherry, dark chocolate, and toasted malt, layered over a gentle peat smoke that stays in the background. The finish is medium-length with dried fruit, leather, and a subtle clove-like warmth.

How does Benromach 15 compare to Aberlour 16? Both are Speyside single malts bottled at 43% ABV with significant sherry cask influence, but Benromach 15 introduces a light peat element at roughly 12 ppm that Aberlour 16 lacks entirely. The result is that Benromach leans slightly drier and more complex on the finish, while Aberlour 16 stays firmly in rich, sherried fruit territory.

Is Benromach 15 good for sipping neat? Absolutely — 15 years in first-fill casks at a restrained 43% ABV produces a whisky that is smooth and layered enough to drink neat without harshness. A few drops of water can further unlock the chocolate and fruit notes.

Where is Benromach 15 made? Benromach 15 is distilled and matured at Benromach Distillery in Forres, on the western border of the Speyside whisky region in northern Scotland. The distillery is owned by independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, who purchased and restored it in 1993.

What foods pair well with Benromach 15? Dark chocolate truffles complement the cocoa and dried fruit notes; smoked salmon mirrors the whisky's light peat; roasted lamb with herbs plays off the oak spice; aged Comté or Gruyère echoes the creamy sweetness; and dried fruit and nut boards extend the finish's toffee and forest fruit character.

What sizes does Benromach 15 come in? Benromach 15 Year is commonly available in the standard 750ml bottle size.

Is Benromach 15 worth the price? Benromach 15 positions as a mid-premium Speyside single malt, competing with well-known 15- and 16-year-old expressions from larger distilleries. Its Platinum Award at the SFWSC and Whisky of the Year recognition suggest it significantly outperforms many bottles at its price tier.

Why Benromach 15?

What separates Benromach 15 from the crowded field of aged Speyside malts is intent. Gordon & MacPhail rebuilt this distillery specifically to recreate a style of Speyside whisky — gently smoky, balanced, layered — that commercial production had effectively erased by the 1960s. The use of peated malt at 12 ppm and exclusively first-fill bourbon and sherry casks gives this 15-year-old a flavor profile that genuinely stands apart from its unpeated neighbors. Platinum and Gold awards across multiple international competitions confirm that this isn't just an interesting concept — it's a consistently excellent whisky that delivers on its historical ambition.
