Description

Antoin Rodet Chablis is a Chablis from the northern tip of Burgundy, France, made from 100% Chardonnay and bottled in a 750ml format. Produced by the historic Burgundy house Antonin Rodet, founded in 1875 in Mercurey, it is a classic dry, mineral white with green apple, citrus and the flinty, oyster-shell character that Chablis is known for.

Quick Facts: Origin: Chablis AOC, Burgundy, France | Varietal: 100% Chardonnay | Style: Dry White Wine, Unoaked | Producer: Antonin Rodet

Production & Heritage

Antonin Rodet has been a Burgundy negociant and estate owner since 1875, based in the village of Mercurey in the Cote Chalonnaise, and its range covers the length of Burgundy from Chablis in the north to the Maconnais in the south. Chablis is Burgundy's coolest and most northerly district, closer to Champagne than to the Cote d'Or, and its vineyards grow on Kimmeridgian limestone packed with fossilized marine shells. That soil, together with the cold climate, gives Chablis its signature: high acidity, stony minerality and a lean, precise profile unlike any other Chardonnay. Rodet's village-level Chablis is fermented and aged in stainless steel rather than oak, a deliberate choice to keep the wine pure and taut. It is made in the traditional style, bone dry and bracing, meant to be drunk young with seafood and shellfish.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Green apple, lemon peel and white flowers, with wet stone, oyster shell and a faint note of fresh bread.

Taste: Light to medium-bodied, bone dry and vibrant, with crisp citrus and apple fruit, a chalky mineral core and electric acidity. There is no oak and no butter, just clean, pure Chardonnay.

Finish: Medium to long, saline and mineral, with lingering lemon and a flinty, mouthwatering close.

How to Drink Rodet Chablis

Serve Rodet Chablis chilled but not ice cold, around 48 to 52 degrees Fahrenheit, in a white wine glass so the aromas can open. It is the definitive oyster wine: pour it with raw oysters on the half shell, moules frites or seared scallops with beurre blanc. It also pairs with goat cheese, sushi and simple roast chicken, and it is an excellent aperitif for anyone who finds oaked Chardonnay too heavy.

Best For

  • Oysters, shellfish and raw bar dinners
  • Chardonnay drinkers who prefer a crisp, unoaked style
  • An affordable introduction to white Burgundy
  • Gifting a French white with a recognizable appellation

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Rodet Chablis taste like? It tastes of green apple, lemon and white flowers with a strong wet-stone and oyster-shell minerality, bone-dry with bright acidity and a long saline finish. It is Chardonnay without oak or butter.

How does Rodet Chablis compare to a Macon-Villages? Both are unoaked Burgundy Chardonnay, but Macon-Villages from the warmer south is rounder and more fruit-forward, with ripe apple and melon. Chablis is leaner, more mineral and more acidic, reflecting its cold northern climate and limestone soils.

Is Rodet Chablis good for cooking? Yes. Its acidity and clean flavor make it an ideal wine for steaming mussels, deglazing a pan for fish or building a beurre blanc, and it is affordable enough to use in the kitchen.

Where is Rodet Chablis made? The grapes come from the Chablis appellation in northern Burgundy, France, and the wine is produced by Antonin Rodet, a Burgundy house founded in 1875 in Mercurey.

What foods pair well with Rodet Chablis? Oysters, clams, mussels, scallops, white fish, sushi, goat cheese, roast chicken and dishes with lemon and herbs all pair beautifully with its mineral acidity.

What sizes does Rodet Chablis come in? This listing is the standard 750ml bottle.

Is Rodet Chablis worth the price? Village-level Chablis from an established negociant is one of the best values in French white wine, delivering genuine Burgundy character at a fraction of the price of Premier Cru or Cote d'Or bottlings.

Why Rodet Chablis?

Rodet Chablis is a reminder of why Chablis became famous in the first place: Chardonnay grown on ancient seabed limestone in a cold climate, made without oak, tastes like nothing else. Antonin Rodet's long history in Burgundy shows in a wine that is clean, precise and true to the appellation, with the green apple, flint and saline finish that make it the ideal partner for oysters and shellfish. It is approachable in price, unmistakably French and the perfect answer for anyone who thinks they do not like Chardonnay.
