Quick Facts: ABV: 50%  |  Origin: Bangalore, Karnataka, India  |  No Age Statement  |  Distillery: Amrut Distilleries Ltd

Production & Heritage

Amrut Distilleries, founded in 1948 in Bangalore, Karnataka, helped pioneer the Indian single malt category when it released its flagship expression in 2004. The distillery sits roughly 3,000 feet above sea level, where the tropical savanna climate accelerates maturation significantly compared to Scotland — often cited as two to three times faster. Kadhambam — a Tamil word meaning "mixture" or "medley" — lives up to its name through a distinctive multi-cask process. The whisky begins as a vatting of 90% locally grown unpeated barley malt and 10% imported peated malt. This spirit is first matured in ex-oloroso sherry casks, then transferred to brandy casks (previously used for Amrut's own brandy), and finally moved into ex-Amrut rum casks. The resulting components are married together in refill bourbon casks at a proprietary ratio to achieve the final balance. No chill filtration is indicated, and the whisky is bottled at a robust 50% ABV.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Cherry and dark Christmas pudding arrive first, followed by baking spices, fresh fruit, and cherry blossom. Beneath the fruit, gentle oak and a whisper of peat smoke add depth without dominating.

Taste: The entry is rich and oily, coating the palate with dried plums, dark fruit, and chocolate. Mid-palate, peppercorn spice and apple peel emerge alongside layers of oak. The mouthfeel is noticeably full-bodied and smooth, with each cask influence revealing itself in sequence — sherry's fruit, brandy's roundness, and rum's subtle sweetness.

Finish: Long and warming, fading slowly through dry oak, lingering spice, and residual dried fruit. The finish is notably persistent, with a drying character that invites the next sip.

How to Drink Kadhambam

At 50% ABV, Kadhambam rewards neat sipping — a few drops of water can open up additional fruit and floral notes without diminishing its structure. Its bold, spice-driven character also translates well into cocktails. An Old Fashioned benefits from the whisky's dark fruit sweetness, reducing the need for added sugar. A Whisky Sour plays well against the dried plum and cherry notes, adding a richer dimension than standard bourbon-based versions. A Blood and Sand is a natural fit, as the sherry and rum cask influences mirror the cocktail's own sweet vermouth and cherry liqueur components.

Best For

  • Adventurous whisky drinkers exploring Indian single malts for the first time
  • Gifting a whisky enthusiast something outside the Scotch and bourbon mainstream
  • After-dinner sipping alongside rich desserts or dark chocolate
  • Building a world whisky collection with a critically acclaimed Indian expression

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Kadhambam taste like? Kadhambam delivers a rich, layered profile of dried plums, dark cherries, baking spices, chocolate, and oak, with an oily mouthfeel and a long, warming, dry finish. The triple-cask maturation gives it a distinctive complexity where fruit sweetness and spice coexist.

How does Kadhambam compare to Highland Park? Kadhambam has been described by critics as reminiscent of a tropical fruit version of Highland Park — both feature light peat alongside generous fruit character, but Kadhambam's additional brandy and rum cask influence gives it a richer, more exotic fruit profile and a sweeter underpinning that Highland Park's heather-honey character does not share.

Is Kadhambam good for sipping neat? Kadhambam is well-suited to neat sipping, with enough body, complexity, and balance at 50% ABV to hold its own without dilution, though a splash of water reveals additional floral and fruit nuances.

Where is Kadhambam made? Kadhambam is distilled and matured at Amrut Distilleries in Bangalore (Bengaluru), Karnataka, India, situated approximately 3,000 feet above sea level in a tropical savanna climate that accelerates the whisky's interaction with the cask.

What foods pair well with Kadhambam? Dark chocolate truffles complement the whisky's cocoa and dried fruit notes. Aged hard cheeses like Manchego echo its nutty, sherry-influenced character. Spiced lamb kebabs mirror the peppercorn spice on the palate. Christmas pudding or fruitcake make a natural pairing given the shared dried fruit and baking spice profile. Blue cheese with fig jam balances the whisky's warmth with contrasting sweetness and salt.

What sizes does Kadhambam come in? Amrut Kadhambam is commonly available in the standard 750ml bottle format.

Is Kadhambam worth the price? Kadhambam positions as a mid-to-premium expression within the Indian single malt space, and its 95-point IWSC score and triple-cask production process represent considerable complexity and craftsmanship for the category, making it a strong value proposition among world whiskies at this tier.

Why Kadhambam?

What separates Kadhambam from most single malts — Indian or otherwise — is the sheer ambition of its triple-cask journey through oloroso sherry, brandy, and rum wood, each layer contributing a distinct dimension to the final spirit. The 95-point score from the International Wine & Spirit Competition, along with Gold medals from the same body, validates that ambition with critical recognition. Bangalore's tropical maturation climate produces an intensity and concentration of flavor that cooler climates simply cannot replicate at comparable ages. For drinkers ready to look beyond Scotland and Kentucky, Kadhambam stands as one of the most compelling arguments for Indian whisky's place on the world stage.
