Description

Romariz 10 Year Tawny Port is a 750ml, 20% ABV aged tawny port from Portugal's Douro region, blended from traditional Portuguese grape varieties. Scored 89 points by the International Wine Review and 15.5 points by Revista de Vinhos, this expression draws on a heritage dating to 1850 and production overseen by one of port's most respected winemaking teams.

Quick Facts: ABV: 20%  |  Origin: Douro, Portugal  |  10 Year Old Tawny  |  Producer: Romariz (Fladgate Partnership)

Production & Heritage

Romariz was founded in 1850 by Manoel da Rocha Romariz and is now part of the Fladgate Partnership, the same group behind Taylor's. The wines are produced under the direction of winemaker David Guimaraens and aged in Taylor's historic lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia. The 10 Year Tawny is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinta Cão — the five pillars of premium Douro port — with the average age of the component wines indicated on the label. Extended cask maturation in seasoned oak gives the wine its signature amber-tawny hue and layered complexity.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with ripe fruit compote before moving into warm spice, roasted nuts, and a delicate thread of caramel-laced oak. There is a subtle tobacco undertone that adds depth without overpowering the fruit.

Taste: The entry is surprisingly fresh for a 10-year tawny, led by red fruit that quickly broadens into ripe fig and dried stone fruit at mid-palate. Roasted almonds and a gentle sweetness round out the profile, supported by well-integrated wood tannins that provide structure without astringency.

Finish: Soft, round, and medium in length, with lingering notes of spiced fig and toasted nuts. The sweetness fades gracefully, leaving a clean, warmly spiced close.

How to Drink Romariz 10 Year

Serve slightly chilled, between 12–16°C (54–61°F), in a small tulip-shaped glass to concentrate the aromatics. This tawny also works well as a cocktail ingredient: try it in a Port Tonic (equal parts tawny and tonic over ice with a twist of orange) for a refreshing aperitif; in a Porto Flip (shaken with a whole egg, brandy, and nutmeg) where the fig and nut character provides a rich backbone; or stirred into a Tawny Negroni in place of sweet vermouth, where its dried-fruit sweetness balances the Campari bitterness.

Best For

  • An after-dinner digestif alongside a cheese course
  • Gifting a port enthusiast exploring Douro heritage producers
  • Introducing someone to aged tawny port at an accessible entry point
  • Holiday entertaining with desserts featuring nuts, chocolate, or dried fruit

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Romariz 10 Year taste like? It leads with surprisingly fresh red fruit that deepens into ripe fig, roasted nuts, warm spice, and delicate caramel, finishing soft and round with balanced sweetness.

How does Romariz 10 Year compare to Taylor's 10 Year Tawny? Both are produced by the same winemaking team — David Guimaraens — and aged in the same Taylor's lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia. Romariz tends to position at a slightly lower price tier while sharing the same production standards and grape varieties, making it a strong value alternative within the Fladgate Partnership portfolio.

Is Romariz 10 Year good for sipping neat? Yes — its soft, rounded palate and moderate sweetness make it very approachable on its own, particularly when served lightly chilled to highlight its fresh fruit and nutty complexity.

Where is Romariz 10 Year made? The grapes are sourced from vineyards in the Douro Valley, Portugal, and the wine is aged in the historic Taylor's lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, the traditional center of port maturation near the city of Porto.

What foods pair well with Romariz 10 Year? Its fig and nut character pairs naturally with aged cheeses such as Stilton or Manchego; almond-based desserts like frangipane tart; dark chocolate truffles; roasted walnuts drizzled with honey; and charcuterie featuring cured duck or ibérico ham, where the port's sweetness contrasts the salt and fat.

What sizes does Romariz 10 Year come in? The standard bottling is 750ml, which is the most widely available format.

Is Romariz 10 Year worth the price? It positions as an entry-to-mid-level aged tawny, delivering production quality consistent with the Fladgate Partnership's reputation — the same team behind Taylor's — at a competitive price point for a 10-year-old port.

Why Romariz 10 Year?

The real story here is provenance: Romariz wines are produced by the same team, in the same lodges, using the same Douro grape varieties as Taylor's — one of the most decorated names in port. What you gain is access to that level of winemaking at a more accessible tier, backed by a brand that has existed independently since 1850. With 89 points from the International Wine Review and strong marks from Revista de Vinhos, this 10-year tawny demonstrates that Romariz is not simply a secondary label but a distinct expression of Douro tradition in its own right.
