Quick Facts: ABV: 14%  |  Origin: Struma Valley, Bulgaria  |  Varietal: Melnik 55 (Early Melnik)  |  Aging: 8 months French oak, 6 months bottle

Production & Heritage

The Melnik 55 grape was created in 1963 by crossing Bulgaria's ancient Broad-Leaved Melnik Vine (Shiroka Melnishka Loza) with the French variety Valdiguié, resulting in a cultivar that ripens several weeks earlier than its local parent while retaining the region's signature depth and complexity. Planted almost exclusively around the towns of Melnik and Sandanski in the sun-drenched Struma Valley, the variety produces smaller berries with thicker skins, yielding wines with concentrated color and firm structure. This expression undergoes 18 days of maceration, fermentation at 28–30°C, and aging in French oak barrels for eight months followed by six months of bottle maturation—a regimen that builds layers of spice and vanilla into the wine's dark-fruited core.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: A fragrant bouquet of fresh black cherry and wild strawberry opens the nose, followed by resinous undertones, cracked pepper, and sweet vanilla from the oak regime. Subtle hints of aromatic herbs—mint and eucalyptus—add a distinctive Mediterranean character.

Taste: The entry is generous with ripe cherry and blueberry fruit, juicy and full-bodied on the mid-palate. As it develops, flavors of tobacco, warm spice, and stone minerality emerge, framed by silky, well-integrated tannins and a balancing thread of fresh acidity.

Finish: Medium-long and persistent, with lingering notes of dark cherry, toasted nuts, and bittersweet chocolate. The tannins leave a fine chalky texture that invites the next sip.

How to Drink Melnik 55

Serve at 16–18°C in a large-bowled glass to let the aromatic complexity unfold; thirty minutes of breathing or a brief decant rewards with added depth. This wine also takes well to pairing with cocktails and mixed wine drinks.

  • Red Wine Sangria: The berry-forward fruit and spice make Melnik 55 a natural base for a sangria with stone fruit and cinnamon.
  • Kalimotxo: Its ripe, generous palate holds up well in this Spanish classic of red wine and cola over ice.
  • Mulled Wine: The inherent pepper, vanilla, and herbal notes align perfectly with traditional mulling spices.

Best For

How does Melnik 55 compare to Châteauneuf-du-Pape? Both share a profile of power, spice, and dark fruit, but Melnik 55 tends toward a more herbaceous, resinous character from its Bulgarian terroir and typically carries a significantly lower price point than Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Is Melnik 55 good for sipping neat? Yes—its balanced structure, integrated oak, and layered complexity make it an excellent wine to enjoy on its own, especially after a short decant to open the aromatics.

Where is Melnik 55 made? Melnik 55 is produced in Bulgaria's Struma Valley, the country's warmest wine region, where the grape is cultivated almost exclusively around the historic towns of Melnik and Sandanski near the Greek border.

What foods pair well with Melnik 55? Grilled lamb chops complement the wine's peppery spice; aged hard cheeses like kashkaval echo its nutty finish; slow-roasted pork shoulder matches its richness; roasted red pepper and eggplant dishes highlight its herbal notes; and dark chocolate desserts mirror its cocoa-tinged tannins.

What sizes does Melnik 55 come in? Melnik 55 Red Wine is available in the standard 750ml bottle.

Is Melnik 55 worth the price? Melnik 55 positions as an outstanding value red, delivering complexity, oak aging, and award-winning quality at a fraction of the cost of comparable Southern Rhône or Southern European reds.

Why Melnik 55?

Few wines offer this combination of genuine rarity and accessible quality. The Melnik 55 grape exists almost nowhere outside a small corridor of Bulgaria's Struma Valley, making every bottle a window into a terroir most drinkers have never encountered. Gold medals at international competitions—including the Japan Wine Challenge and the Balkan International Wine Competition—confirm that this is not merely a curiosity but a serious, well-made wine. For anyone seeking a full-bodied, oak-aged red with character that stands apart from the familiar Cabernet and Merlot landscape, Melnik 55 is a compelling and rewarding discovery.
